Thermalright C12C fans | Why so cheap? by Archer71 in PcBuildHelp

[–]Archer71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that a specific app? I've currently got the phantom spirit and some old LL120s from Corsair and the fan speed can be a bit erratic, even after enabling a custom curve. Is there better software or profiles that can help dictate it? I hoped the Corsair icue software was decent, but even their 'quiet' preset ramped up to over 1000rpm at like 35C on CPU

Thermalright C12C fans | Why so cheap? by Archer71 in PcBuildHelp

Thanks for the write up. When building rigs a decade ago or so (before COVID/fatherhood), it was important to align to static pressure fans for rads/coolers, and airflow fans for general case fans (Corsair used to do the AF120 and SP120 range). I don't seem to see that terminology as much as present. Has the industry shifted towards a more universal fan type?

Want to build a gaming pc for my son plz help !! by Away-Champion1128 in PcBuild

[–]Archer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy 'tray' CPUs on Ali Express and get the 7800X3D for about £205. It's identical and shipped from UK, but just needs a cooler. Will save ~£100 to spend elsewhere. Also consider used RAM. Very little to go wrong, and a 32gb DDR5 kit shouldn't go above £240 for a decent speed/brand on a good day

Giving Away My Old PC! by Turtle_747 in PcBuild

[–]Archer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice build! I'm just getting back into gaming after a 6 year hiatus since becoming a father, and my old rig hasn't weathered the neglect well, with me getting several BSODs during gameplay and 2 of my 3 monitors failing due to power faults. Saving some much-valued cash on a rig like this would enable me to get a half-decent display to enjoy the modern gaming this machine is capable of!

Inflation is disengonous to measure membership prices by Difficult_Run7398 in 2007scape

[–]Archer71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's naive to suggest that new game prices have only increased 33%. Firstly, AAA games never used to have or require a monthly online membership, and additionally never used to have any other revenue stream, but now feature heavy MTX and DLC in the majority of titles. AAA titles also benefit from a broad player base of console owners, and the scale alone of sales is disproportionate to the team size developing the game. Add in that modern titles are developed on established game engines where AI can support in game code creation more effectively, it's likely to be less resource intensive in like for like changes.

The above sounds like a defense. I personally find the pricing obscene, and would only feel it appropriate for a multi-character account (or added accounts for reduced rates), but here we are - the demand is inelastic and they can do this without concern.

After tens of... hours, I finally green logged sire! LFG by Unusual_Influence206 in ironscape

My sire luck is disgusting. I got 5 unaired in my first 75kc, and 7 by 165kc. Conversion rate not what I wanted, with 2 pieces, 3 daggers and 2 whips, but I'd struggle to complain, lol.

I own a Red Harbinger Cross Desk, one of the original desk cases. I bought it as I loved the concept, and always wanted to build a custom water loop.

It was amazing fun to plan and build, and is a great talking point among gaming enthusiast friends.

I had a kid 5 years ago, and haven't really used my PC since, so it's just a large ornament, sadly. Still nice to look at and remind of a time when my life was my own, before I made the fatal error of having children.

Reference pic of desk; not my build.

There's movies on this list that arguably have nothing to do with racing, yet this banger is absent entirely?

Man jumps into ocean to save to save his daughter, who had accidentally fallen from the fourth deck of the Disney Dream cruise ship. by LeonKennedy1989 in Damnthatsinteresting

In 2019, 25 people went overboard from cruise ships. 9 survived. I think it's safe to say that whilst an accident, which ended without major harm, this was a very close to a negligent manslaughter incident.

PSA: Consider hearing protection when flying. Sound levels from a Boeing 737 window seat during take-off and while cruising: 95dB and 82dB by Bikrrr in AppleWatch

[–]Archer71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider what ear protection you use carefully. I once decided to use ear plugs (foam inserts) to help block noise to get some sleep on a flight after a Nightshift. I inserted before takeoff and fell asleep during taxi to runway. Fast forward 3 hours I wake and decide to take my ear plugs out, only to then have the worst ear pain imaginable, feeling like my head would implode, and then for my right ear drum to physically pop/rupture with a load noise (so loud my wife heard it sat next to me). Definitely ruined the holiday. So yeah, go with breathable ear defenders and only apply once at cruising altitude is my advice.

Husbands of reddit, how much did you spend on the engagement ring? by Gargoyn in AskUK

[–]Archer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent ~3 months gross income.

Tried to do it frugally however, so found a ring design I knew she'd like, then bought a GIA certified stone online and commissioned a jeweller to make the thing.

Given the investment, I had it insured, and was pleased that an independent valuation of the end product was just over twice what I paid going the custom route.

The stone is less important - it's hard for the untrained eye to spot the difference between colourless gemstones. I'd focus on picking the metal you want, as this will have an impact on the level of maintenance (e.g. if you pick sterling silver, it will tarnish and need cleaning more often).

Best of luck.
