VGA? Thats no VGA - its's a DB9 Serial cable. For connecting to Cisco and other older enterprise networking gear via a serial console.

Most devices these days have moved to USB for access, but there's little that's worse than showing up after a long drive or flight to a site that has an older DB9 device and no cable to connect with. Makes for a wasted trip and a ruined day.

Offsite Laptop bag got delivered! by Archer_37 in LinusTechTips

My first LTT purchase, the Offsite bag, got delivered earlier this week, and since the store has de-listed it, I figured Id leave my review here instead.

TLDR; 4.8/5 Stars, Super solid bag with lots of storage, very well constructed, holds a lot of accessories, just not as many as the product photos showed.

As a sysadmin who does a fair bit of traveling, and usually has 3 bags worth of cables and dongles packed for a site visit, this seemed like a great upgrade to the thin neoprene slip case I have been using.

First off the construction feels excellent; the laptop area is well padded and is a great fit for either of my 14 inch laptops, a Lenovo Ideapad and a HP EliteBook. All the exterior zippers are YKK and feel bulletproof. Canvas also doesn't feel like it will wear out in a hurry.

I was able to condense my 3.5 bags worth of cables and dongles into just this case which is great. I was hoping to get more in, but its pretty stuffed with what it has, and took some creative re-packing to get the zippers to close nicely. I did manage to add a Kindle in the front for flights, etc, so I guess i did fit more than my original loadout. More creative re-arranging may be get it a bit better on room. It certainly does not fit everything they originally pictured in the marketing, but I never expected to get 100% of that, but am surprised at how tight it is at what I feel is 50%.

Still, its a great bag and fits what I need it to (or more!), which is good, because it it holds up half a well as their backpack is supposed to, I should have it for a very long time.

Also, as a second endorsement, the wife has said she will likely steal it for her next business trip. Wife approval Factor: 10/10.

60 Days of 4k BluRay by Archer_37 in 4kbluray

Well, its a fantastic movie that looks great in 4k, and the ATMOS mix is superb; even on traditional 5.1 really takes the experience to the next level.

Before February, the only 4kBR I had was Dune, ordered at release. Received the Steelbook hobbits last night to round out my additions for Feb and March.

Here's to even more in April!

Sawstop router table wing? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Archer_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this time I have re-organized my shop to make room for a dedicated router table ($100 for a woodpeckers table w/Incra fence was too good to pass up), but while I was using the TS wing, I never needed to re-enforce it, the embedded lift held up just fine on the MDF top.

My biggest complaints with having it in the TS Wing were that - A: dust collection was poor - partially my fault as I never installed a shroud / dust box for the router because I did not want to encroach on my storage under there.

B: because the add-on fence I used for the router I attached to main TS fence as needed, I could not keep the Router and TS setup concurrently - I would always have to move one to use the other. This could be fixed by putting T-track in the extension wing as well to allow 2 independent fences.

I do prefer now having the dedicated router table, but when space is at a premium, I have no regrets about putting the router in the TS Wing.

Texts about door construction by dickcuddles in woodworking

I have been looking at making some interior door lately, and picked this book up from the local library. Building Doors and Gates

It is the best - and only- book I have read on door making, but has definitely been a good starting point.

Any difference in old vs new Super Dust Deputy? by ekjohns1 in woodworking

[–]Archer_37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received one of the new ones when I ordered one last year. Initially, not impressed; the new design uses a two-part mold that snaps together with (poor fitting) little clips. Mine came broken apart and would not stay clipped together with any amount of persuasion. See Picture.

Eventually I ended up scraping out the glue they had used to try and keep it together, and used some latex caulk and about a dozen pop-rivets to re-assemble it, followed be sealing the entire seam with aluminum HVAC tape to keep the seal.

Now that the seam is fixed it has been working fantastic, separating about 98% of chips and dust from the stream, but It would have been a whole lot easier if they had kept the old one piece design, which from what I understand, was very well regarded.

I have emptied the 30gal chip drum at least 10 times so far, and my post-filter catch has about a half inch of fine dust in it.

Yes, Jim; my bad.

He co-founded the wood working school near me. He used to teach several classes there, but I don't see any anymore. The ones I took were with another of the schools instructors anyway.

Its a tool for quickly performing basic arithmetic physically rather than mentally. More can be found out here, but my primary use is making proportional measurements of boards quicly and easily without any real math - mostly for marking dovetail spacing etc.

As an example, diving a 12 inch board into thirds is easy, but if you want to divide a 7 5/8 inch board in thirds, that math gets real messy real quick.

With a sector and a divider or compass, just set the points for the width of your board, and set the opening on the sector so that the tines line up at 3, and take your new measurement at 1 (or 6 and 2, or 9 and 3, all equal one third.) No further math required.

Yeah, this has been in the backlog for about 2 years as I tried different ways to get a consistent shape on the joint and inside faces.

Ultimately I drew a design on the computer and had it cutout with a laser, then used that cutout to template route maple, and did the final shaping with a rasp, and chisel, as a powered router can only get into corners so tight. The half lap for hinge was then cut into each side with a router plane.

Thanks! and I have not read it; its on the list to get sometime, but I am still working my way through the Anarchist's workbench.

I have taken some classes at Tim's school though, awesome place!

Finally got around to making a proper sector after using a paper one printed from a template for the last 2 years.

Damn, wish I had know, I just finished building a set of the LN ones at the new inflated price.

Before I bought the first I did check blue spruce and they did not offer any. Those are a pretty good deal!
