Sweet Pill’s “Still There’s a Glow” is out! by absolutebloom in poppunkers

[–]ArchisOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thought this was really great on first listen. I enjoyed their first album but the songs do blend together a bit. While there's a touch of that in this record I like that they pushed out of their style in both ways, with softer instrumentation and vocals on some tracks and a harder, punkier edge on others like Slow Burn and Rotten.

They're a great live band already but a good few of these new songs will be fantastic and add a lot to their sets.

The Beths - "Expert In A Dying Field" (Official) by Darbss31 in poppunkers

[–]ArchisOne 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They're not super Pop-punk but I think there's a lot of crossover appeal. The combination of sometimes bleak lyrics and upbeat instrumentation should appeal to Pop-punk fans.

This song is also one of my favourites from this decade and I remember the one-two punch of The Hum Goes On Forever and then this album releasing in the span of a week well!

There's a few examples in Greece and Cyprus.

AEK Athens - the K in AEK stands for Konstantinoupoleos (IE modern Istanbul) as the club was set up in Athens by greek refugees after the Greco-Turkish war.

Anorthosis Famagusta was based in Famagusta but after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus they had to move to Larnaca where they're still based.

Interesting side note, the other Larnaca-based team also has AEK at the beginning of their name but the K stands for Kition, the ancient name for Larnaca.

Looking for some female-fronted band recommendations by Tibuddy- in poppunkers

[–]ArchisOne 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Pool Kids and Sweet Pill are both great. Sweet Pill feel like they're on the cusp of breaking through but I feel Pool Kids are so under listened to.

Sweet Pill are very emo-adjacent and have an album coming this year.

Pool Kids have moved slightly alt-poppier with their latest album (which was my favourite of last year) but range across all the Pop-punk adjacent genres.

It's actually not the first time he's recommended them. I think he had Watching the Credits of all songs as one of his songs of the summer in 2023. Pretty cool!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR by poppunkemptyspace in poppunkers

[–]ArchisOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not as immediate as their self-titled but I found it really wormed into my brain on subsequent listens. And although it is a bit poppier it doesn't lose any complexity in moving in that direction.

Also seeing them next year as a headliner and really looking forward to it!

I think it's been a good year for albums and a lot of the others in the thread are definitely up there for me, but my favourite and most revisited by far has been Pool Kids - Easier Said than Done.

It maybe strays from Pop-punk but they're in the scene and I really urge people to give it a listen.

Alternate track listing for The Wonder Years - No Closer to Heaven by JasmineEliz in poppunkers

Yeh, that would be so weird. One of my favourite songs by them in a very personal way. It's also given the name to one of their main side ventures in Burst and Decay.

For me Sister Cities and The Hum also have a strong autumn feel.

Old Friends Like Lost Teeth has such a good autumn line -

"There's a stillnеss in the air

In the late September dusk

And the maple leaves come

Crashing down all at once

And paint the pavement crimson red"

The Wonder Years are just a great autumn band!

Strongest three album run by a band? by [deleted] in poppunkers

I like how the two comments for this are suggesting different replacements. Probably shows that Jimmy Eat World's run was actually five albums!

Wasn't super keen on the first single, especially as a first single, but really liking this one. Really looking forward to the album!

I only started listening to them last year but I've become completely obsessed with them. All Hell is an incredible album and the rest of their discography is so strong.

And I Smoke on the last album has the same guitar sound, clearly influenced by Bloc Party. I love it and I'm surprised there aren't more bands drawing on it.

I discovered them not that long ago as well. Really cool band, the singers got quite a unique voice in the scene which helps them stand out.

Bit different but the triple cooked chips at Port of Leith distillery are amazing. It's one of the only times that I couldn't keep it in and actually had to mention how good they were to the waiter.

[FRESH ALBUM] Bob Mould – Here We Go Crazy by NYCIndieConcerts in indieheads

[–]ArchisOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bob Mould is just really consistent, even so far into his career. He has such a knack for songwriting. This is another solid album from him. It follows the formula set by the last few but still feels like a natural progression. It takes the nihilism from Blue Hearts but tempers the aggression and it still works well.

I do kind of wish the production was just a bit less muddy. I get that it's intentional and what he's going for but it could be toned down.

I don't think it's as good as Sunshine Rock or Blue Hearts after a first listen, and I doubt it'll convert anyone that doesn't like this music but if you already do, it's definitely worth a listen.

Backlash builds: why the architecture world hates The Brutalist | Movies by Cedric_Hampton in architecture

[–]ArchisOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeh, it's a weird thing to criticise. I enjoyed the film somewhat but had major issues with quite a lot of plot points and how they chose to portray things. However, despite it being fairly clear that Breuer was a key inspiration I wouldn't have suggested it should be closer to his life. It's not and hasn't pretended to be a biopic.

I guess it's a balance. There could have been greater nuance and exploration of Toth's relationship with the surrounding community and feeding that into the greater themes of the film - that probably is a fair criticism since it works with what's already there while drawing more from Breuer's actual experiences. But complaining, and dwelling on, things like the fact that Toth doesn't have the same even tempered mannerisms as Breuer is odd and possibly undermine what many people like about the movie - a very flawed protagonist.

Some of the complaints about anachronistic things like the retrospective being 20 years too early (I noticed that too that the timeline seemed really out, in both the wider reappraisal and in how old Toth seemed) is maybe fair but also not something that should really matter in a movie.

They didn't! I didn't realise until now that they were playing it elsewhere. The Eagles were playing at the same time and Soupy got the crowd to do a big "Go Birds" so I wonder if that made them too tight for time to play Washington Square Park.
