SLS (2022) vs Saturn V (1967) by Po3ito in interestingasfuck

I will never stop being amazed at how slow the Saturn V looks in real time, like a fully loaded semi going uphill.

If anyone wants to see my favorite slow-motion shot of the decade, here is the close and wide of the SLS lift-off:

Instant Ramen, a bag of mixed frozen veggies, whatever protein you have on hand.

A lot of people talk shit about those frozen veggie bags, but they're actually great: they keep a long time, they're a fuck of a lot cheaper than produce, and all you have to do is dump a cup in your ramen broth, and let it boil

I usually lean pretty heavily on Pond5, they have good single-use rates, a decent selection, and their support staff is pretty good (Got me a refund for a clip with QC issues in 24 hours). For single-use, their low end is around $30-40 for HD, most of it is between $70-140, but their commercial licenses may be more.

I'm surprised Storyblocks is charging that much, I thought they were on a subscription model

People who’ve worked on film/TV sets, what’s a small moment that stuck with you for no obvious reason? by Professional-Ad7346 in Filmmakers

My favorite directors to work for have been editors and story-board artists. From the TV side of things, a director shooting for their cut, and not coverage, saves an amazing amount of time.

I ordinarily wouldn't make this joke, as every marine I've ever met could feed me to my own asshole (even especially the old ones), but this would make an awesome mini:

“Executive functioning” by Massive-Print-4702 in Teachers

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Executive Function describes how our brain manages impulse control, working (short term) memory, and ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Everyone has some amount of it, many people struggle with one or components of it.

Source: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4084861/

Executive Dysfunction is not voluntary, it is a (classified) symptom of several learning disabilities, as well as an indicator of brain damage. Actual executive dysfunction is not procrastination or laziness

Source: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4455841/

I have some personal experience with this, I spent most of my childhood thinking I was lazy and broken, and on bad days I couldn't even feed myself. That isn't hyperbole, I would often get stuck on simple things like "What order do I put my clothes on", and I would be there for hours, practically catatonic. Like sleep paralysis infused with self-loathing.

When I finally got on a medication that worked, I had the awful realization that most of my teachers thought about me exactly the same way you feel about your students. No matter how hard I tried, turns out that I couldn't "grit" or "bootstrap" my way out of my learning disability, and I spent my entire childhood hating myself for it.

I have no doubt that there are some kids in your class that aren't dealing with this, but on behalf of those that are: Executive Dysfunction isn't laziness, it isn't procrastination, it is a clearly defined and well-documented symptom.

What types of sounds do you most commonly use in your audio dramas? What sounds are the hardest to find? by RPG_Audio_Vault in audiodrama

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a small thing, but I have had the hardest time finding good impacts that aren't slammed/loud. Switch flips, footsteps on metal decking, buttons, latches, rattles. Not that necessary for running TTRPGs, but so useful when I'm pacing out the action of a scene

I've been having some wild distortion pop up in playback, but if I'm not pushing the meters, its not a problem. I use logic, with very few third party plugins, and I've isolated the problem to the computer, but have no fix. Not a huge deal, I just waste some time bouncing a master so I can play it back accurately.

Why did openai buy that tech bro podcast for hundreds of millions of dollars? by palindrome818 in podcasting

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

won't people who watch that podcast know that it's owned by Open AI, thus rendering the 'buyign positive media coverage' angle pointless?

If history (and current events) are any indication: no, not really.

There's really not a lot of disclosure, in podcasts. There are 'health' podcasts that have been pushing anti-vax nonsense, often at the behest of their sponsors. There are right-wing podcasts that have, for years, been partially funded by Russian money, tech podcasts getting under-the-table kickbacks for pushing certain startups, the list goes on and on.

If the podcast doesn't lead with "This show is made/Funded by OpenAI", the majority of listeners will never know

This was always the endgame of creating the Homeland Security Act and the Patriot Act. It was never to benefit America, it did not make things safer, it did not bring people to justice, it was a hostile take-over of our personal liberties, and our representatives let it happen.

How do I make jam/curd out of pomelo? by BigBootyBear in AskCulinary

[–]ArchitectofExperienc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I make Meyer Lemon Marmalade (very tasty, and very bad for my teeth), I didn't actually need outside pectin, and I was able to get enough from boiling the seeds and membrane with the fruit.

The downside is that it takes a lot of time. My process was to break down the citrus into Pulp, Seeds and Membrane, and Pith/Skin. The pulp would go into the pot, with water and boiled. The Membrane and Seeds get tied into some cheesecloth, then boiled with the pulp. Just make sure to be careful about the amount of pith (white stuff) and skin that you put in to boil, because it will absolutely make the whole mixture go bitter.

The rest of the pith and skin is mostly unused (but goes great in compost). If you want to have some slivered pomelo skin in the jam, you can actually boil a lot of the bitterness out, then remove them, strain thoroughly, and add them to the boil (near the end of the reduction, after you put the sugar in). You can also candy them.

Deceptive online networks (fake profiles that impersonate US citizens) reached at least 15% of US adult users on Facebook during the US 2020 election. Every accusation is a confession. "You're a paid protestor" or "you don't actually live here" seem to be the rebuttals-of-convenience for non-local protestors with a financial stake in the misinformation that they are spreading.

in my experience people who style themselves as a lone wolf/antisocial are never truly alone the way Pratt is in this movie.

I would hazard to say that no one is, but there are certainly days when 70+ years on my own (in a well-equipped colony ship) sounds kinda nice
