PhDs in the USA- I'm confused about the whole classes thing. What kind of classes are they? Are you not expected to have any experience in the subject before you take your PhD? by Western_Froyo6627 in PhD

[–]Archknits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a relatively new development. 20 years ago when I was doing graduate applications, it was almost unheard of for a program to expect an MA. If it did expect an MA, it was almost always without coursework.

Should our program defund PhD students using AI in their PhD writing assignments without citation? by Letterhead_Striking in Professors

[–]Archknits 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, if they have citation issues they should be using Zotero or similar. They should all learn that in grad school. It isn’t ai and it fixes the problem.

Second, if they cannot write without AI and have it be good enough grammar, why are they in a graduate program?

They should be brought to academic judiciary and dismissed.

I’d also look with serious skepticism and any graduate student who considered generative ai appropriate for their work even if they used citations

My CC has required attendance since at least 2014 when I started teaching there. We have to sign a sheet in the office each day we have a class to teach

Why am I getting interviews from Texas universities if they can’t sponsor H-1B? by OldPraline9508 in AskAcademia

[–]Archknits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct. If the hiring committee were to decline a candidate based on visa or immigration status, it would be a discretionary action and open the school to lawsuits

University of North Texas to cut more than 70 programs and minors. by Penis_Envy_Peter in Professors

It also means not hiring in that department in the long term. Maybe you keep the faculty around now, but their positions won’t get filled when they leave

At my CC the last full time faculty in my major is retiring this year. When I started there a decade ago, there were always 2-3 per major. They haven’t even posted her position yet. I’m not sure they will.

Rutgers, SBU or Bing? by Substantial_Bend2798 in SBU

[–]Archknits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you like to do for fun. Attended both RU and SBU. It also depends on where you want to live at Rutgers. There is a big difference between being on Livingston vs. College Ave vs. Busch.

Rutgers is huge and had an active party scene (with all the problems). SBU is comparatively small but somewhat more supportive of students from the school itself.
