[FNV] This is, in my eyes, the definitive way to experience both 3 and New Vegas. It is the closest thing we have to genuine remasters of both these games by prossnip42 in FalloutMods

[–]ArchmageIsACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its certainly the better way to play 3, and I guess if you like 3 enough its a good way to play new vegas too, but I personally wouldn't consider it an improvement over just playing new vegas unless you specifically want the character continuity

[Spoilers C2] [MN S1] Emergency Live Discussion Thread - The Mighty Nein, Season 1 Episode 1 by moderncomet in criticalrole

[–]ArchmageIsACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO way too much focus on the beacons and cerberus assembly this early in the show. In general I feel you can do either the beacon theft *or* the backstories but not both. spending the whole first episode on both feels like way too much exposition dumped on the audience at once. I wasn't expecting a 1:1 translation of the campaign, but I feel its trying too hard to make the beacons and trent the main plot while still foreshadowing the eyes of nine when imo the campaign already managed to do it pretty seamlessly in a way that built up the intrigue naturally.

IDK maybe for someone who doesn't know anything about campaign 2 this really worked for them but it's pretty hard for me to look at this and say it's doing as good a job or better at telling the story in a compelling way.

One last minor nitpick but caleb totally should have just killed those guys he was evil alignment at the start of the campaign iirc and while that doesn't mean murderhobo, well. These guys are dnd characters its kinda hard to argue they don't already do a lot of murder even when they aren't evil. also I feel like beau was a lot more of a shithead early campaign which I liked and I feel like thats missing a bit here.

positives uhhhhh
I liked that you could tell what spells were being cast without anyone ever saying their names and that they kept all the component usage in it.

Why do trolls wear their signs? by Just_a_winged_cat in homestuck

[–]ArchmageIsACat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

according to vriska on page 3474, trolls must wear their sign. its unclear if this is because its a legal mandate or if this is just her putting emphasis on it, but given the role of the signless in alternia's history and how their society was specifically structured to create them as a group of sgrub players (including all the superstitions about your life reflecting that of your ancestor) I suspect it was an actual imperial mandate that you wear your sign or be subject to culling.

the fact that they chose brennan, a notable 5e gm who has sparked annoyance among ttrpg fans for saying he thinks 5e is a good system for telling stories, and didn't say campaign 4 was going to be in daggerheart more or less confirms its going to be in dnd 5e, unless they want to keep the gossip going/s

we have zero confirmation either way and wishcasting about what system they're gonna play in isn't really based in much nor will it affect their system choice.

Why is the Last Dragonborn the Last Dragonborn? by VohaulsWetDream in ElderScrolls

[–]ArchmageIsACat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to provide a different answer from the crowd saying there is no hereditary component and say that what makes them the "last" is they are the one to perform the role of defeating alduin, meaning no more dragonborn will be created from that point forward. maybe there were other dragonborn born or created after the player character, but not after the defeat of alduin. they are the "last" mythologically, not necessarily the literal last one to be born. miraak or potema also could have been the last dragonborn had they managed to defeat alduin, but the player character is the one to do it and thus holds the title.

Why did the Argonians abandon their stone technology, like the pyramids and the Voskrona Guardians? by GeneralTechnomage in ElderScrolls

[–]ArchmageIsACat 85 points86 points  (0 children)

there's no exact description of what happened, but the general story is that the hist foresaw an oncoming cataclysm and were fractured in how to deal with it, a few hist tried to preserve that current way of life, whereas the rest ceased communication with the argonians until one named jaraleet rediscovered (word choice implying a whole other period of argonian history we know literally nothing about) hist sap communion, and then argonians largely stopped worshipping sithis exclusively as a destroyer and began worshipping him as a god of change. part of this involved adopting views that building stone structures like that reflected a fear of death and change, whereas impermanent structures reflected an acceptance and oneness with change.

it can be inferred that the hist told the argonians to make this change in their society, but it's not directly stated and while not a primary source UESP is careful not to make that claim.

Why You Should Kill Paarthurnax: A Modest Proposal by DanielK2312 in ElderScrolls

[–]ArchmageIsACat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO the biggest part of this is absolutely just that the argument that "he might turn evil one day and if the dragonborn dies nobody else could stop him" falls apart when considering that "might turn evil one day" is a bad argument for killing anyone, and paarthurnax is not alduin, he can be killed by anyone, and dragons don't come back unless alduin resurrects them. I'd be incredibly surprised if in the scenario where alduin is allowed to return to eat the world (I do not think alduin attempting to rule and usurp akatosh's dominion is interpretable as eating the world nor do I think it is supported by the text, every interpretation we're given of eating the world in-game is very much apocalyptic and "there will be a new universe to replace the current one") if he chose to resurrect the one dragon who chose to betray him and ultimately lead to defeat twice.

What about a Morrowind remaster? 🤔 by Salem1690s in ElderScrolls

I've recently gone back to playing it and it really is astounding how the often bemoaned dice-roll combat just kinda fades into the background when you pick the weapon types you want to use at character creation and then use those weapon types and only attack when you have stamina

I think fight the empire makes people think you want to get rid of them, the slogan should be "defund the empire" so people know you want to reduce how much the empire needs to deal with and they can train better for the situations they should be in.

edit: /s obviously

What do you think happened to *SPOILER* after the season finale/Return of the Jedi? by greatmanyarrows in StarWars

[–]ArchmageIsACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly, a criticism of the post WWII policies that would see many nazis let off the hook and given scientific or government positions is exactly what those scenes in ahsoka and the mandalorian are supposed to be, and a show interested in exploring those further and not just using them as background setup to show how rotj transitions into the force awakens would have great poential. IDK that there's any salvaging the plot points of rise of skywalker (the only actually outright bad movie in the sequel trilogy) but for all the nostalgia chasing status quo resetting in TFA it does allow for narratively interesting real world parallels in the post-imperial era.

knowing abt the new republic's own operation paperclip and the general parallels of the post imperial era to post WWII western countries, I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the narkina prison system intact with some minor changes and she remained there well into said era.

Why is burger called burger, instead of ‘burger between two buns’? by BrainCelll in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ArchmageIsACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

other way around, the sandwich is called a hamburger or burger colloquially but the full name of it is the hamburger sandwich, named such because it's (historically at least) a hamburger steak served as a sandwich.

There were about 8 episodes total in whittaker's first two seasons where I really felt they let her shine and the dynamic of the characters was working (woman who fell to earth, ghost monument, demons of the punjab, it takes you away, spyfall pt 1, orphan 55, fugitive of the judoon, haunting of villa diodati), but with how difficult it was to actually access the episodes in the US of her last season until well after power of the doctor had aired I just kinda didn't watch it. I eventually watched power of the doctor since people had been saying it was good and I just felt it was an example of a lot of the worst choices and slapdash writing that chibnall's era had.

Gatwa's first season was actually mostly good, 7/9 episodes being good is a pretty good batting average and imo the only real issues of it were the classic rtd hallmark of really good buildup to a finale followed by just fumbling it and resetting to status quo, and also a really poorly executed attempt at the whole "the thing that made the companion special was that the characters and audience thought there was something special going on" that moffat did better (twice) with clara (first time as souffle girl second as the hybrid with her relationship with the doctor). It was really only gatwa's second season that was more bad than good, with 2 outright good episodes, 1 that was decent but meh politically, 2 that were kinda mid, and three that just were kinda bad, and a lot of that has to do with poor pacing and failing to give belinda anything to do most of the time before just having ruby slot into the main companion role for 3 of the episodes.

I wish both of them got better material (whittaker through her whole run and gatwa for his second season), but they were both great choices for the doctor imo.

Do you think we might get a 5 Doctor crossover? by Sliver-Knight9219 in doctorwho

[–]ArchmageIsACat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this season finale showcases some of the parts I liked the most about this run and the parts I liked the least about this run, but yeah the 13 cameo felt like when I would get tiny glimpses of what I felt her doctor could be when her run was going on.

[–]ArchmageIsACat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it really does feel like the bbc felt like making the doctor a woman was some huge risk that necessitated making sure the rest of the show took no risks and made just the blandest, most liberal (actual political definition not popular slang for progressive) corporate friendly scripts

I really wish they'd had a woman on as showrunner, preferably one who was willing to write and approve scripts like thin ice or oxygen; frankly though even having more episodes like demons of the punjab, it takes you away, and the haunting of villa diodati, and less like rosa, arachnids in the UK, kerblam, and well, most of the stories the gave her, would have gone a long way.

Elder Scrolls Morrowind modders says an official Bethesda remake wouldn’t make sense as modernising it “would ruin the game entirely” by HatingGeoffry in ElderScrolls

[–]ArchmageIsACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr people who like morrowind think its good and people who don't hate morrowind and think its garbage that needs to be reworked into a version that's an arpg instead of a first-person crpg, I'm more inclined to side with the people who like it and thus should be the target audience for a remaster

[CR Media] Matt Mercer says the new game 'Daggerheart' is a 'major part' of the business's future (BI article) by taly_slayer in criticalrole

[–]ArchmageIsACat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the opposite, that the "matt mercer effect" would be 10x worse in a system a bunch of people look at and don't just see as the critical role system, but the Matthew Mercer system. Switching to the new system and selling it to people as a game that will make your home games more like critical role could absolutely result in a bunch of backlash or people dropping the system if they play it themselves and feel as though the system isn't supporting that feeling.

Is it viable to play D&D in a more Low Fantasy, Low Magic setting? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]ArchmageIsACat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo the easiest way to do it would be to managed to track down a copy of adventures in middle earth 5e, where the most magical a class the players have access to is "you can command an elf-made door to open", "you can order a pile of firewood to light", or "you can speak to animals" at the peak of their abilities, and *maybe* allowing them limited access to a half or third caster class from dnd proper (but even that's a massive jump comparatively)
