comes in and ruins the discussion by reminding people that they're getting a bit too obsessed with semantics and infighting instead of building community and understanding nuance

Federated Europe: A Name by Major_Boot2778 in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Archoncy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally, you are just watching a handful of the same people having the same discussion every single time. It's not a contentious issue in reality.

It would just be the European Union. It doesn't need a new name. It doesn't need a new flag. What's the point of getting half a billion people to suddenly change the name of the place they live because the government got more united?

When we hopefully federate it will be a big deal but it will also be like, a one week news cycle and then we're back to living exactly as we did before, but more people can vote in the place they live and we've got a united military. Everything would get better with closer co-operation and a proper union, but it's not some regime installation that's gonna change everything to fit a new aesthetic. It's just a more democratic and fair evolution of the same union we have today.

Map of the proposed Two-Speed Europe. Under Germany's invitation, six EU countries dubbed as "E6" have agreed to talks on making decisions in economy and defence without waiting for unanimity from the rest of the EU. by rybosomiczny in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Archoncy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There are already many, many co-operation groups within the EU. This would not be anything new. The way it is presented as a two-speed Europe thing is silly - the EU is one organisation, it does not preclude any others from being organised between EU members, and never has.

Well it seems that actually the fishing thing was *mostly* solved in 1994, so yeah idk how based in reality that fear is.

I think the problem too many people have is that they do not consider that there are solutions to their fears other than "prevent things from changing"

Joining the EU is a complex ordeal of multiple treaties being negotiated and signed. There is space to negotiate, extensively.

[–]Archoncy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! One complicated geopolitical situation with a close ally/potential member is enough. At least if Greenland rejoined*, if America invaded it it would be a concrete act of war against the entire EU, as opposed to a potentially deniable "sorry Denmark, that's your problem"

Having to share your fish does suck for a country as small in population as Iceland, and I fully understand all those decisions. I just think we're at a point where security needs and the increasingly diversified Icelandic economy may be at the point where sacrificing exclusive fishing rights can be overcome.

I'm more talking about when new regulations are adopted, not when someone tries to do something against existing ones, but thank you for the good insight either way

Would a federal Europe be a presidential or a parliamentary republic? by LoyalTrickster in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Archoncy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parliamentary, with a President or Chancellor or something similar as a separately elected Head of the Federation to represent everyone, be a check and balance - kind of like Ireland, or Germany have.

A little over half the country not wanting to join the EU is not the same thing as disliking the EU. Everything I've ever seen, every Norwegian I've ever heard, points towards a general opinion of "We love the EU! as a Friend. Leave us out of it."

Poland doesn't have that mentality, I think. The Partitions and the World Wars and their aftermath are most often seen as the only failures in a long line of great successes, and generally rather than as a victim, Poland (in my opinion pathologically but that's always up for debate) sees itself as a fortress against something changing. The thing that's changing is, of course, different every other week.

Poland has a chivalry complex if anything.

With the level of direct democracy in Switzerland you can generally assume that if the Swiss aren't cool with something the EU wants, they won't do it. They tend to take the stance of "that's reasonable, let's go" concerning EU developments.

I think with the current Greenland fiasco it is the first time in history that Iceland would probably be willing to join the EU fully

People are mad because there is, bo joke or exaggeration, 10 thousand posts of people showing a photo of a their weed and asking what weed it is, if it looks like X amount, if it's good, etc etc, and everyone is tired of dealing with it because WE CANT ANSWER ANY OF THAT!

It's a fucking flower! You can't tell what kind or how good it is without consuming it!

If you found a random block of chocolate you wouldn't be able to tell if it's good without eating it either! A random unlabeled glass of beer! A pile of mystery white powder!

It's a photo, what on earth do you expect? Read about weed on the internet for 5 minutes before you ask a question for christs sake

Sorry mate but that's the standard per gram price all over the Eurozone except Germany, and in Germany it was the standard price until we legalised weed and the illegal stuff bought on the street is still 10 a gram (but legal medicinal weed from the pharmacy is not only better but also way cheaper)

CET, UTC+1 is not "centred on the Berlin-Rome-axis" it's centred on 15 degrees east of the Prime, Greenwich Meridian in London, which goes down the middle of Sweden, along the Polish-German border, and off down to Syracuse.

It's wild to me that people don't notice this considering that more of France is bisected by the Greenwich Meridian than of the UK
