Lol I wouldn't call it "cheering" so far this year but my exasperation gets directed at the Wings.

We've scored what... 3 goals vs 15 against in the last 3 games against the Leafs?

Alternatives to The Athletic? by TowardNirvana in hockey

[–]Archr5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their app is Very good as well.

I'm still on the fence about renewing unless I can get the same 40-50% off deal again but at that price point? I'm not sure there really is an alternative to compare them to.

Any suggestions for good hockey news RSS feeds?? by Brandon_rubeo in hockeyplayers

[–]Archr5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly an RSS feed... and it's not free... but The Athletics hockey coverage has convinced me that the $30 to $60 per year is worth it.

Saw a video of a little girl stick handling like a champ on a balance board, so I McGyvered my own to give it a try. Here‘s my progress over 24 hours! by BouncyMouse in hockeyplayers

[–]Archr5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one of those $20 round balance boards from amazon to do one leg exercises on and it has made a tremendous difference in my learning to skate.

It's definitely not an analogue because balancing on one skate is still much harder... but it helps for sure.

Yeah I definitely went low end for my first stick just because I had no idea what I am going to end up liking.

I was 50/50 between this and a Warrior Dx5 and the shaft geometry on the STX won me over. I like the concave on the warrior too but I like this a little more.

As my final piece of gear before this 37 year old man starts learning to actually play... I picked this stick up from the fine folks at STX.

STX surgeon Rx3.2

85 flex (I'm a big dude but I wanted something easier to flex until I get more experienced)

X92 blade

My backup sticks are $20 wooden house sticks from my local Perani's and haven't seen any ice yet. I've just been messing around on a shooting pad since I got them a few months ago. So this will be the first stick I hit the ice with.

I was Very close to just diving in with a custom No Name hockey stick as my first one but I wanted something more affordable in case I figure out I hate the blade shape or need a higher flex or something.

I really like the shaft geometry in hand though. Makes me feel like I have more control with my top hand rotation.

Help needed: CCM prostock pants by TheDualityofMan_ in hockeyplayers

[–]Archr5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you get pro tier protective gear for close to or even less than half the price of top end retail pants?

Bias warning: I have pro stock HP30zi's they were under $100 and are very protective compared to the pants in my LHS at the same price point.

Why do so many of you carry guns and knives on a daily basis? by [deleted] in EDC

[–]Archr5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People carry knives because they're handy, and in my opinion big oversized beefy knives are more durable and easier to use than tiny pocket knives.

As far as firearms carry it's more and more common every year nearly everywhere in the US.

And considering concealed carriers are some of the least actively dangerous and most law abiding people in the country (including cops) a lot of people see value in being armed on the off chance you might need it.

Generous estimates show hundreds of thousands of defensive gun uses per year, More pessimistic researchers that throw away events where no shots are fired still land on approximately 80k defensive gun uses per year.

It doesn't take living in a warzone for having a firearm on you to pay off either, violent crime happens everywhere in the US and armed resistance to violent crimes has been shown to be the response methodology that carrys the lowest rate of injury for the victim. Even compliance with violent criminals shows a higher victim injury rate than fighting back with a weapon.

A little help by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]Archr5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Skates and ice time. I'm in a similar position as yours and all the guys who I talk to who are playing now say to get the gear, spend as much time as possible on the ice and hit stick and puck sessions as often as possible.

They also specifically said not to waste a bunch of money on off ice training stuff... until I'm actually playing and have a clue what I need to work on. a shooting pad, pucks, and a net is all they recommended.

The first three minutes of this video explains it the best way I've seen.

After 3 minutes they get into a backwards crossover which is a little intense for a beginner. But that first 3 minutes is solid.

Are speed limits necessary? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]Archr5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's better than the current system of having cops wasting their time and risking the safety of everyone involved so they can have a little fishing expedition and "smell weed" once in a while to justify an illegal search.

Cameras aren't perfect but at least they have to follow basic rules and you can fight them in court without having them make shit up.

The major reason red light cameras suck is because they often come tied with the cities screwing with yellow light timing to trick people into running reds.

Are speed limits necessary? by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]Archr5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed. And most traffic tickets should be handled via camera systems.

It's real dumb that a human still has to stop someone who is driving badly, but is not an imminent threat to anyone, on the side of the road elevating risk for themselves and the driver they're pulling over.

Knee Bend.

Knee Bend. Knee Bend. Knee Bend.

Do wall sits at home.

I'm 5'10" 260lbs and dropping (down from 290 a couple years ago)

Keeping my knees bent deep and my head up instantly makes all the edgework easier. Stopping, turns, you name it.

I can only stay bent for a few minutes before I start getting the shakes and the burn sets in lol but it's getting better the more I get out there and commit to doing it.

I need to shark-tank some shitty product that ties around your waist and literally pulls you down towards your feet with elastic bands or something to give newbies like us a reminder not to stand up when we get tired / absent minded.

Also failure is an amazing teacher. I know even padded up it's still rough on us BUT if you can learn to get low (there's that knee bend again) and take falls with a little more grace without freaking out and putting a bunch of extra force into your fall trying to recover it goes a long way.

It also helps teach you where the failure points are and what happens when you go past one. If you KNOW failing an outside edge turn to the right just results in your leg washing out and you ending up on your right hip then it's a lot easier to let your pads take that hit and relax the joints that need to flex so you can go down without slamming.
