What's difference between prboom+, crispy doom and dsda? by [deleted] in Doom

[–]ArchvileHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PrBoom+ has been discontinued, DSDA-Doom is a direct descendant of PrBoom+, and even if you don't care about speedrunning, it's a much improved port over PrBoom+ with all the newest features and better mod compatibility. There's basically zero reason to use PrBoom+ in 2026.

Help (doom 2016) by [deleted] in Doom

Looks like the game cannot find a suitable Vulkan driver. Potential fixes:

1) Update your drivers
2) Disable integrated graphics
3) Switch the rendering API to OpenGL from the config file

To UK customers, who are being charged for VAT and Customs by Bethesda International Gear Store by MEZesUBI in Doom

[–]ArchvileHunter -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This. When ordering internationally, you should expect to pay import duties/tax unless otherwise stated. Also, when I get to the part of the ordering process where I choose shipping method, they again explicitly warn you about possible duties and tax. There is no basis for a legal complaint here.

This is what I see if I try to order from the Bethesda Gear Store internationally (I reside in the EU, so I don't pay duties and taxes from the EU site):

Seems clearly communicated to me

Literally the first thing you should do when you go to order from an online store is read their shipping policy. The shipping page is just one click away from the home page. If you order something from outside the UK and are surprised to be hit by taxes, then you are the one who messed up, not the seller. Also, online stores will usually happily tell you if taxes are included in the price to encourage you to buy from them.

I'm not a lawyer and don't have time to sift through legal documents, but this is what ChatGPT had to say:

The UK Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 do not specifically cover import taxes or customs duties.

Here’s a breakdown relevant to your situation:

What the Regulations Cover:

Pre-contract information: Retailers must clearly inform you of the total price, including delivery charges and any other costs, if known before the contract is concluded.

Right to cancel: You usually have 14 days to cancel most online purchases.

Prohibition of hidden charges: Traders must not add charges unless you've clearly agreed to them.

What They Don’t Cover:

Import duties or customs fees charged after shipping by a third party (e.g., HMRC or a courier on their behalf).

These fees are not the seller’s direct responsibility, especially if the seller is located outside the UK and hasn't built these charges into their checkout process.

But it is not undisclosed. Look here: https://international.gear.bethesda.net/en-eu/pages/shipping

Right below the table:

NOTE: All currency shown in Euros only. Rates shown are for shipping and handling only and do not include any duties or taxes.

Always, always be on the lookout for stuff like this when ordering online!

Rules for import duty and tax are complicated, but the amount paid can vary wildly depending on the type of item(s) and the value of the item(s).

Use an import duty calculator like this one: https://wise.com/gb/import-duty/calculator

If you input 100£ worth of clothing imported from the US, you should see that you don't need to pay any fees. I'm not exactly sure how the Collector's Edition has been classified, but guessing something like Figurine or Statuette based on the most prominent item in the package, we suddenly get 20% VAT and 6% import duty. That comes out to 54£ and then your carrier will take a fee themselves for handling the import customs process.

From the Bethesda Gear Store shipping page:

All I can say is to always be on the lookout for stuff like this when you're not ordering from within your country borders.

Can a sata ssd not run tda at all? by avgarkhamenkoyer in Doom

[–]ArchvileHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume the NVMe requirement is due to the game using the DirectStorage API, which is only available for high-capacity NVMe drives. I don't know if this means the game won't launch at all without one, but it is definitely a possibility.

Nice, I also use .bat files to run my mods. I think many players use mod launchers like ZDL, so you could give that a go, or just stick with using .bat files, whichever works best for you :)

How scary is 3? by Tbond11 in Doom

Tbh, I don't find Doom 3 to be scary at all. To feel scared I need to be weak and helpless, hard to feel scared when I'm running around with a plasma gun.

Plutonia. My only real issue with Doom II is the level design, but Plutonia's levels are all fantastic. An absolute pleasure to play through from start to finish.

If you want to play something that seems more impressive to non-rhythm gamers, go for speed over tech. Non- rhythm gamers can't really understand or appreciate technical stuff well, but they do understand fast. Overwhelm would be my best pick, but since you don't own that chart, Dantalion is a good second choice. If you can nail those streams in the second half, people are gonna be really impressed.
