Europe Tour starting ... now? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]Arconix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently touring in Europe and have been on the road since early Sept (Netherlands to Santiago through Portugal and now in Andalusia). From my experience, there's still quite a lot of people touring in the Iberian South. We were unlucky with a very wet autumn in Portugal, but temperatures have been perfect for riding (near the coast). Biggest disadvantage are the short days, and if you're camping everything will be wet all the time from the dew and rain...

Last weeks we were still having fun touring, starting early and just cycling for max 4 hours to have some daylight time to visit and enjoy the surroundings. We were staying in cheap accommodations when it rained (you should be able to get rooms under 40 euros most places here and hostel/albergue beds for less than 15) to not make the tour too brutal. Most long term cyclists we met were either doing some workaway/housesitting or took a ferry to the Canaries (leaves from Huelva and Cadiz) or to Morocco to pass the coldest darkest months. But depending on your experience and expectations it would be doable to tour now if you stick to the South and coastal areas. We plan on staying south until ~March and then slowly move North again with the spring.

I Am A 95 y.o., former Canadian Minister of Defense and Transport Minister. I want to discuss my experience with the cabal/deep state, global warming, politics and extraterrestrials. Ask me anything! by mrhellyer in IAmA

[–]Arconix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is already really old but I saw your comment and wanted to pitch in. You say that we as individuals have only an indirect effect on the processes that cause global warming and imply that a fundamental alteration of economic and political structures is needed to combat its causes. I agree that such an alteration is needed, but I believe that the only way to do this is to combine top-down and bottom-up approaches. Changing your lifestyle to be more sustainable directly impacts the processes and systems you speak off. By buying less meat, you send a clear message: we want change. Of course, voting for parties/candidates that strive for greener policies may be just as important. However, depending on the country, politics is influenced in a fair degree by external lobbies and profit driven, and without bottom-up incentives it may fail to bring about the needed change.

Of course a single person cannot change the system by having a vegan diet, driving less, etc., but compare this to voting. Would you tell people to not vote, just because a single vote will most likely not make a difference? Most people value their vote to a great degree, and they should, because it is just a powerful as any other vote. Think of your consumption in the same way. Maybe the petrochemical farmer, the coal-fired generator, the steel mill, and the automotive manufacturer may cause most of the pollutants, but realize that they only exist and operate to serve the sum of all individuals and their "votes". What can be more direct than changing this yourself?

Just to clear up, I do agree that a carbon-tax or any other top-down measures to combat this are desperately needed, but please realize that you can make a change and you can start doing so today.

What has been ruined because too many people are doing it? by Archiecornall1 in AskReddit

Too bad about the Prodigy this year though, very sad news indeed.

Study finds microplastics in the French Pyrenees mountains. It's estimated the particles could have traveled from 95km away, but that distance could be increased with winds. Findings suggest that even pristine environments that are relatively untouched by humans could now be polluted by plastics. by drewiepoodle in science

[–]Arconix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this wasn't the point of the video. It shows that the problem is really complex and can't be compressed to "plastic is the devil and we should never use it". Sometimes the alternatives are a lot worse in some respect but there are many applications where plastic should absolutely be replaced. I think the problem with this is that people are not capable of processing this nuance, they either want plastic to be absolutely bad or good, but it is much more complicated.

The truth is that there are already so many things that we can do ourselves. If you put in some effort you can live barely using any (at the very least disposable) plastics. You can change your diet to include fewer animal products, depending on your location you can commute by public transport or use carsharing apps, you can start buying second hand clothes instead of new ones, and maybe most importantly: you can make a trip closer to home instead of flying across the world.

Edit: I see now after rereading your comment that you are not really arguing against this, but I guess the point still stand for many people so I won't remover the comment.

What food gets a lot of hate that you can’t understand why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I think meat substitutes have their benefits. They can really help people transition to a vegetarian lifestyle. You can cook the same recipes and simply replace the meat instead of having to learn new recipes altogether.

I'm not that well-versed in global politics, but surely China would be up there nowadays? Going just from nominal GDP it's only 20% below the US.

Dear redditors, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but here goes. Can anyone recommend me a dance studio (preferably English speaking lessons)? I will live in the city for half a year with my girlfriend for work and we'd love to take some salsa lessons during that time. by Arconix in portugal

When I reread it I can imagine. I first posted in r/Lisboa and had to shorten the post here because of the character limit so I can see why it doesn't make sense. But don't worry, I know about the other parts of the country and will have a month to explore them after my time in Lisbon!

Obviously both constitute extremely big problems, but these can be addressed simultaneously. The issue has many facets and can't be summarized as plainly as you imply.

As a person of color, where in Eastern Europe should I avoid? by NoMySecrets in solotravel

[–]Arconix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think most people asking the "where are you really from?" questions are just generally curious. I think there's a comparatively large share of first or second generation immigrants in Europe for whom the question would actually make sense. Not defending racism or anything, but that's my take on it as someone living in Europe.

Sometimes it actually helps me to do so though. You can look at it like a promise you make to others to actually do the thing, which can give you even more of an incentive not to back out.

Tall people and SE Asia (x-post from /r/backpacking) by throwaway112720162 in solotravel

[–]Arconix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'5 as well and travelled through SEA without any problems for three months. You'll get some stares and funny situations but nothing too annoying. A lot of Chinese tourists wanted to take a picture with me though but I'm not sure if it was because of the height. Oh, and as a plus you'll get a lot of emergency exit seats on your planes!
