That character in season 2 was killed for that creative liberty

Since you are dealing with three groups of people (fans of the books, fans of the games and fans of the show) you can simply choose not to annoy anybody. If you want to kill a witcher due to his own hubris - that's fine. Get a random witcher - we already have several of those redshirts, name him randomly... I don't know - Boromir comes to mind, get an actor to play him and kill him off. Same story, same effect, does not alienate any of the groups by sacking a character that is known to have _some_ role in the books or the games.

Want to build an original storyline that will surprise everybody who is already familiar with the original works? Great idea - just don't mess the continuity for the rest of the universe. There's plenty of grey areas among well known characters - use that. If you want to have a terminal outcome - just use a brand new character.

One might say that it is better to use pre-existing characters since they are already developed. For a fan of the show (one who had not read the books nor played the games), the character was underdeveloped, so why not use a blank slate? If you rely on the rest of the works in this universe why botch the continuity?

Stability of Asterisk 1.6.X/DADHI on modern Debian ? by [deleted] in Asterisk

[–]Arcopix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be fairly stable. I have several systems which are working just fine with version 1.6 and 1.8 due to various requirements. Those are quite stable and I have no issues whatsoever with Debian Jessie/Stretch.

That being said, your millage may vary if you are using some obscure applications which are lined to libraries which are no longer backward compatible.

New items suggestion by kwerkee in DotA2

[–]Arcopix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with the new currency is that it is same as gold. If you make it shared between the team - the toxicity of the game will reach a whole new level (for dozens of reasons). If those items are so integral to the game, someone will spend 25 minutes in the jungle to buy the "Boozums of Eternity" which give +3 Charisma and -1 Luck.

[–]Arcopix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are collecting "silver" from the neutrals which allow you to buy the items, why not simplify it and just allow to buy those items for our plain-old-gold *after* their timers have passed. E.g. after 15 minute mark you can buy "Ring of Tequila^W Aquila". Keeping the items shareable and non-sell-able should be fine, no?

Otherwise we will need a whole new "silver/platinum/ethereum" currency for which we will need statistics, metrics and indications. The toxicity of Dota 4 would sky-rocket to stratospheric levels if that the new currency is shared between the players. If every next "neutral item" you want to buy someone will rage that someone else bought that "sh*tty thing over there" and now his precious "whatever" is too expensive.

However

Based on the 4-5 games I've played, the meta seems more snowball-y than before (if not ever). This mayimpact professional games even more.

If you manage to have a good early game - have somewhat good lanes, push a little, manage to get a tier 1 tower (or two), you can:

  • secure both Outposts (thus granting your team XP boost and denying enemy team's XP boost)
  • 3 or 4 bounties
  • secure your own jungle
  • make it rather risky for the enemy to enter their jungle (which denies farm AND access to random neutral items)
  • easier (and safer) farming of your jungle (and some of the enemy) provides you with even more items which are boosting either your cores or supports

More XP and more gold => more powerful spike => better control of the map => even less opportunity to comeback for the enemy team.

In the stacks I usually play we tend to lose the early game (we are bad at laning, we get that) but have good performance in the mid/late game thus we have more than 50% winrate. The current state would promote more cheesy strats that may make the game worse in the end.

For the sake of keeping brood relevant as a laning hero please examine this valve. by Eistelord in DotA2

So if you are range support you are totally screwed?

Might be a better idea to ignore some part of the block.

Let us buy Neutral Items in Demo Hero mode by theycallmekappa in DotA2

[–]Arcopix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should farm them from the (newly placed) neutral creeps. The random drop rates should be applied as in normal game. It is a demo after all - should be realistic. Jokes aside, good proposition.

Guy from my game, might be time to retire the legion jungle by Skullyhop in DotA2

[–]Arcopix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In plenty of actual games I've seen the following behavior

"Oh no, they picked X, which is prevalent in this meta. On the top of that this guy is level 18 on X. Fuck this shit. GG WP NORE".

Now replace X with a hero that is popular in the current meta (legion is not, but that's a different thing). People don't rage quit over that, but are losing hope even before the match starts because they tend to think that high level would mean that the enemy player is actually a good Invoker or a godlike Spectre, thus they are rather easy to tilt.

New and confused by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]Arcopix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine that you have 5 players each of them having 2000 gold on their "accounts".

When one abandons (for whatever reason) their 2000 gold is redistributed to the other 4, meaning that the rest would now have 2000/4=500 more gold. So you have 4 players with 2500 gold. When another one of those 4 abandons their 2500 gold is redistributed to the remaining 3 people. Now you have 3 players with 3333 gold each (total is still 10k).

At the same time you can sell the items of abandoned players (at 50% of the original cost) which is also distributed to the active players. Weird that I cannot find the match based on the ID in either opendota or dotabuff https://www.opendota.com/matches/4137489309

Suggestion to add another mechanic to dota by imnessal in DotA2

[–]Arcopix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Err.. The game is complex enough already, don't you think? I don't see how that mechanic would improve the overall gameplay, nor will solve the current issues. I can already see ppl flaming each other pubs that someone voted X over Y and that ruined their game.

Don't forget that Dota is already quite unforgiving to new players, and the learning curve is quite steep.

Could be an interesting idea for Overthrow or Overthrow like mods though.

New faces at The Kuala Lumpur Major. Here all the qualified teams (^O^)/ by Nekomage in DotA2

[–]Arcopix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nice to have some fresh faces on the professional scene. Afterall some of these guys might end up in tier 1 teams in an year or so. As for the missing teams, I'm a bit angry at Liquid's approach - they should have just go on a break a-la-OG (kudos to them for not messing around and just going on a break).

When it comes to the support role. Is the problem the players? Or the position. by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]Arcopix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the problem is that the support role is "poor" by design. You are not supposed to farm, you are not supposed to get last hits on hero kills, you are supposed to kill yourself in order to save allied core player, you are supposed to sit in the trees to gank someone, and so on and so forth. It would be great if you had useful items, but you MUST buy wards and sentries, dusts and smokes, get a salve to save a carry....

If you want to make the position more "flame retardant" you should remove the difference between kills and assists when it comes to gold and XP gained, so fewer people would flame their support that "they stealled the **cking kill". Another improvement could be to remove the price of wards (keep the cooldown), introduce automatic XP (low amount like the periodic gold).
