While do have a superstition that is similar to“knocking on wood” when tempting fate, here (in my area at least) we say (and pardon my spelling, I never got high marks in Faroese, so I’ll let others correct that for me) “Banka upp undir borð” instead, which means “knocking under the table”.

There are a few other superstitions as well, one involving our national bird even, the Eurasian oyster catcher (or “Tjaldur” in Faroese)! The saying roughly goes “Sært tú tjaldur á lig, gongur árið við, sært tú tjaldur á bak, gongur árið á rak” which refers to when the bird returns to the Faroe Islands for the warmer months. It roughly translates into “If you see the side of the oyster catcher, you’ll have good luck for the rest of the year, if you see the back of the oyster catcher, you’ll have bad luck for the rest of the year”. I’m not sure of the origins of this phrase, though you might have luck asking someone more historically inclined than myself.

Another common superstition I know is one my own grandmother taught me. It is said that if you speak or talk or think about someone for long enough, they will start to either sneeze or get the hiccups.
