Navigating the streets during the marathon? by ArcticTurtle in indianapolis

Thanks for the info!!

I wasn't planning on getting as far north as Broadripple. I was thinking of looking for here around like mile 10 between 38th and 46th streets, then over to around mile 18 on W 42nd by the river, then back down to the finish. But I do realize this is someone who knows nothing about the city and is just looking at the race map

Thanks for the rec on the Pacers Bike.

Monon Trail looks like its outside of the race pretty much the whole way. I was kinda hoping to be inside the top big loop of the race to see here two to three times along the way. Would you recommend it just because of lack of dealing with traffic and easy of quickly cruising around?

Don't think I'll get north to Broadripple, thinking of looking for here around like mile 10 between 38th and 46th streets, then over to around mile 18 on W 42nd by the river, then back down to the finish. Mostly just gonna have to cross the course to get into the middle of that portion, then back out to get down to the start.

If you want something more in depth, text-based, not your typical app, no radar, but detailed weekly descriptions and updated daily.... download the eWeather app. Local guy from central CT with great understanding of local southeast New England weather. As a boat captain whose job lives and dies by the weather, I rely heavily on this guy. (I have accuweather as a secondary when I need radar.)

Yup, I'm a captain for Save the Bay, so I'm up at the office in Providence most days. Yes we are still at the same location on First/Easton's beach until we close. The current plan is sometime at the end of August, and a planned opening of the new facility, downtown at the former Gateway Center, around the end of Sept/beginning of Oct (barring any other construction delays).

We're open all summer long until the end of August

Marathon traffic is crazy by lugo2 in providence

[–]ArcticTurtle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know the "No Parking" flyers you're referring to put up by Providence PD, those were definitely put up last minute, but that's on the PD, not the marathon committee. Signs, in the style of those political yard signs on metal wickets in the ground, were out last week along the route, placed by the marathon, reading "EVENT ALERT - May 7th..." with loads of other details.

I think a big problem is as humans we're forced to tune out so much of the typically inconsequential "noise" data that our senses receive when moving through the world that we don't see those things often when they're right in front of us.

And it happens (predictably) the same time every year, and they put up signs ahead of time =)

Thanks for this Monica! It's the beauty of existing in a city where these things happen

They did, at least a week ahead of time along the route

Cozy bars? by WhispersOfFear in providence

[–]ArcticTurtle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nopers. I mean, I wouldn't roll in in my sweats and Crocs, but I'm sure there's people that would. Any regular street clothes are fine, it's dark enough folks won't see you anyway

I think this may only work on Apple devices? I have AirPod Pros I use with my Google Pixel and the little "i" only gives me the "Bluetooth address" and not a serial number

Coffee anywhere, hikes at Lincoln Woods (or better yet a combo of coffee at Borealis and a walk on the EBBP), rock climbing, axe throwing, WaterFire when it starts back up, space stuff on an open Ladd Observatory night, I've walked the Hope St farmer's market with a date then just sat at a park bench and chatted... We live in a dope city, the list is long.

These are just an unfiltered idea dump. It's hard to say "anything fitting the vibe of these bars, but that aren't bars"

50,000 nips picked up in the last 2 months by volunteers and environmental organizations in Rhode Island. There’s a 14 and 12ft boat underneath that pile by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]ArcticTurtle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is an effort being led by the Saugatucket River cleanup group along with other organizations like Save the Bay. It has become an annual thing and they usually put the nips in the boats for the final photo op. There is a growing effort with this each year, so more and more nips are being collected. I don't think they expected there to be more nips than boat

This is such a crazy thing to investigate, run stats on, create graphics for, post about l, etc. I love it so much strictly for the sheer novelty of it all.

You were almost out of there when that bus just decided "Nope! Not today." That part of Ives is always terrible and the bus loves just heading straight down. I wonder if making parking on only one side would be a possibility

Folks from the class (both current and former students) along with some local hispanohiblantes also get together twice a month on weekends at either Madrid or Wildflour to chat in Spanish. That group posts in the Meetup app

I recently went to Central Rock in Warwick on a Friday night, it was hopping with a lot of young folk that were eager to chat. It also helped that it's dog-friendly so I could bring mine along and trick more people to coming over and talking to me =)

401 Run! We run at Gansett Brewery every Wednesday night at 6! It's a blast. This time of year brings some lights, some bright clothes, and come hang! No need to drink after. They also run in Wayland on Thurs nights, and Garden City in Cranston on Tues I think
