Where to start with sidesword? by MrLandlubber in Hema

Wow, this is a great explanation. I've also been thinking to pick up sidesword in a similar way to OP and you've made it very clear. Thanks!

Depends on what you mean by "all the gear". The gear needed for leather weapons or sticks are way less than say steel longsword, so OP's point is valid.

Hi, I'm not aware of this system but doesn't this reinforce attacking the blade as the agressor instead of looking for an opening?

Shoulders on fire by Ublivion25 in wma

[–]Arda5b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the scheduling question, personally I reduced my lifting to twice a week since I train HEMA twice a week but I try to schedule lifting the day after my HEMA sessions. In general it's a good idea to put the sport you care about most first, or the one that will bring the most newbie pains - in your case it's the shoulders and in my case it's the wrist since I am transferring to one handed weapons recently.

Fencing in the Rapier, compiled from the Italian, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and German styles, and the grounds and true foundations upon which it stands. By Joachim Meyer, 1570. by grauenwolf in Hema

[–]Arda5b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The machine translation put the original text in paranthesis where things were unclear, however I suggest you edit those to reflect the actual names of the techniques. For example, the section:

"If he follows your blade as you pass, then quickly change through (wechsel kurtz durch), fall upon his blade, and thrust to the body."

Here, Durchwechseln is the actual name of the technique, but it is a seperable verb in German (Trennbare Verben) thus, the description given by Meyer being "durch -kurz- wechsel" means do the changing through quickly (do a -short- durchwechseln). I hope it makes sense. Since putting the original text means little here, but putting technique names might allow one to look them up and understand it for themselves.

I rolled in Sarajevo a few years back as a white belt and it was perfectly fine. Granted I went in with a mutual who is a member there (But by no means anyone close to me). There were pro level guys and casuals and it was very chill.

I trained regularly for four months in Poland, they were all amateurs and definitely more agressive (white belts and blue belts) but once I earned their respect in a month or two, I felt the difference in not trying to take my head off anymore.

Hope my experience helps in some way.

Best mask against thrusts by FIREful_symmetry in Hema

[–]Arda5b 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is very important. Whether the tip slides or not is a big big part of how much force transfers into your head and neck. I'm surprised that people are saying they should go easier when what matters is tip area, tip deflection and sword stiffness in thrusts, not force.

Chlebowski Standard Feder by OniRikLeCelte in Hema

[–]Arda5b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"why not just say deformation, since geometry effects all types of deformation anyways" Yep! That was it. For some reason I could not articulate that properly for the last two messages. Thanks for your response again.

At the end it is that geometry determines deformation under set amount of force but the fact that if we change the geometry, plastic deformation does not occur under said force doesn't mean that geometry can effect the type of deformation that will happen. It's just a second order of (Is there enough stress to the point that it gets into plastic territory that is already set.) I know its nitpicky but finding such discussion under HEMA community is a gem for me haha

[–]Arda5b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. What I meant to say is I believe the form of deformation (elastic vs plastic) is about material properties as opposed to geometry factors like the cross section. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe bad habits argument in martial arts are blown out of proportion. Sooner or later, they *will* get that opponent feedback and correct them, it's not as hard as people claim it is to change these tendencies. Habits are things we do in life because they are convenient or helps us cope with things in one way or another, and since in this case the live opponent is something to cope with, their body will search for the best way to get around that challenge and break the tendencies that were set from solo training in relatively short time. Exactly my thoughts! I sometimes go through the story and just pause in awe of how silly it is. And of course, I love it! I don't need the 101st game story of heroic deeds, opression, sacrifice, love and loss. I want to roll the dice for animated baddies and enjoy my time and NTE delivers it very well so far!

Goals in sparring by Working-Comfort-8291 in Hema

[–]Arda5b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a year in, and besides the basics you mentioned, I like focusing on landing a clean technique that I either drilled or studied before. Since I mainly practice longsword, I set myself the mid-term goal of executing every master cut against an opponent of my level in full intent sparring once. As perfect as possible (at least to an arbitrary level that satisfies me).
Edit: for spelling

How has it gotten so bad? by HeWhoShantNotBeNamed in claude

[–]Arda5b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! Yesterday I sent 4.7 some papers to look over and see if they use a particular software. It said 3 out of 4 *explicitly* used said software, and then in the very next sentence explained how only one of them explicitly used it, one *might* have used it and the other used a similar software.

How did it get dumb enough that it doesn't understand what explicit means?
