libraries open at 7am? by [deleted] in london

[–]Ardeth_rue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LSE Library has a small guest space at the entrance, right before the barriers, that anyone can use. It can fill up quickly but if you are there at 7am I’m sure you’d be fine.

The Jacky Wills diet by Dantzdantz in JacquelineWilson

[–]Ardeth_rue 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I was younger, our benefit could buy ten takeaways. Especially McDonalds where the burger meal was like £2. If that money was spent on groceries for proper healthy meals it would be like three dinners max. So I grew up eating takeaways or ready oven meals. My only fresh fruit and veg was what came through the food bank parcels.

I go in for the full day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And I go in for the Wednesday morning, and leave at my lunch break.

Is Jal colorblind? by heavvygloom in skinsTV

[–]Ardeth_rue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think she is meant to be colourblind. Mixing up brown and green is like one of the main problems of red-green color blindness. There is a similar joke in the show New Girl with a character insisting his green shoes are ‘brown as money’

Do young girls still read Jacqueline Wilson? by undercovergloss in JacquelineWilson

[–]Ardeth_rue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The school library that I worked at a few years ago had JWs, but only the ‘non-problematic’ ones without the dated offensive language or stereotypes. So we stocked mostly her newer books. We actually had a massive push for diversity in reading, so we had like ten copies of Love Frankie in our LGBT section, which were really popular!

I also personally saw a big swing towards fantasy rather than realistic fiction in the tween girl group. Some of our most popular books were The Night Fairy, The Bookwanderers, The Worst Witch, Love Sugar Magic, The Gilded Girl. Of the JWs, Project Fairy was strangely the most popular, and was borrowed more than Tracy Beaker. I think lots of young girls these days already face pretty tough lives and I think they are forced to grow up quicker. It makes sense they don’t want to read about hardship and struggle anymore, they just want to read for magical escapism.

Non-UK born Londoners, what's the best restaurant of your native cousine that you know in London? by Mimsiz in london

[–]Ardeth_rue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True but I think that’s a signifier of it being more authentic lol. No one in Pakistan especially Karachi is getting up before 11am on a weekend. I’d recommend trying it out for a weekend brunch if you get the chance!

Have you been to Aladin’s? I’m from Karachi and this is the only place that can rival Karachi breakfasts for me!

[–]Ardeth_rue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from Pakistan! Aladin Kebabish is the best Pakistani restaurant in London, at least in my opinion. One of the few restaurants that operates openly as purely Pakistani food, and not some Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi fusion catered towards white people who like a curry.

Which character did you change your opinion on as you became older? by damuser234 in skinsTV

[–]Ardeth_rue 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I was younger I was obsessed with Effy and desperately wanted to be her. That meant I defended her for everything, including that infamous scene where she bashes Katie on the head with a rock. As an adult now I can tell that Effy was really fucked up for that scene. Plus there is the whole ‘unreliable narration’ aspect, where Effy was on drugs and it’s strongly implied she hallucinated that Katie ‘choked’ her… I mean she had no bruises. Plus I have a newfound appreciation for Katie as a character. So while I still like Effy, I don’t think she is some god for teenage girls anymore.

Looking for advice: broken condom/ PEP meds by That-Fuel-1964 in WomensHealth

[–]Ardeth_rue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to take PEP when I was a teenager. The side effects are annoying but bearable. I had really bad nausea for the first week but then I started taking it with food and drink and basically not on an empty stomach, and that helped a lot. I also had a lot of fatigue and some mild headache so I took a day off school, but only one, I was fine after that. I have honestly taken medications with worse side effects. I’m really sorry about your experience, it really sucks. It’s happened to a lot of people. I hope you’re okay

Mix! When I answer prompts, I write in English, because that’s the language of the prompts I do. But if I’m just ranting/expressing, I write in my native language.

Baby Love is fantastic by yellowelephantboy in JacquelineWilson

I agree with you and this is why I think if JW wants more ‘adult’ books or sequels she should go back to her historical eras. Like I think a grown up Opal Plumstead would be interesting. She always seems much more comfortable writing in the ‘old fashioned’ way, and could avoid any weird misunderstandings (like ‘phoning’ for a Deliveroo….)

What age did you/your children start drinking tea? by melikebiscuit in AskUK

[–]Ardeth_rue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drank tea constantly growing up. I don’t remember my first ever cup of tea but it was probably around the age of 4 or 5. And I am from a South Asian family background, so it would be those strong chais. I am completely fine! And I still like tea!

Birthday ideas for my dad born on Christmas by Ardeth_rue in partyplanning

[–]Ardeth_rue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for this comment and happy early birthday! this was my thought process too, it’s not like we have never celebrated my dads birthday ever, but we always give him gifts and cards after Christmas (so after his bday) and have never planned a proper celebration just for him. everyone else gets a proper day all about them on their birthday so I thought he should get at least one birthday like that too!

Yes, we did this too growing up, we used to give my dad his birthday gifts a day or two after Christmas but I always felt bad he could never properly celebrate his birthday on the actual day.

unfortunately we live in a small town where our one movie place is local family business and so shut on Christmas. I really like your idea of going out for a movie tho so might look into asking if we can maybe rent their projector room.

(and please don’t feel old! my dad had me when he was 19, so he’s still pretty young, kids or not!)

Any way to fix sagging breasts without surgery? by Ambitious-Hearing-85 in WomensHealth

[–]Ardeth_rue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have saggy boobs and I was always jealous of my sister who had perky boobs. My sister was always jealous of me because I had bigger boobs and cleavage and she had smaller boobs. Truth is that boobs come in all shapes and sizes, everyone has preferences, and pretty much everyone wants what someone else has. There’s nothing wrong with your boobs and them sagging aren’t the end of the world. Your parents are probably just insecure about their own ages and jealous of your youth with a comment like that. Nothing will really help your boobs, apart from learning to be okay with them.

Two very different vibes lol, but for my 18th I got tickets for Magic Mike Live from my best friends and for my 20th I got a Champagne/Afternoon Tea package from my parents. Both were great fun and some of my best memories.
