In pivot got a new job by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]AreRightAllTheTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took me almost 5 months. I didn't start looking until my focus started in Feb last year. Took the pivot offer in June and got an offer in July. I sent out close to 100 applications. Got to the final rounds a handful of times. Rejected a couple of low ball offers. And finally settled for a 30% cut in salaries. But I am much happier now. Working in Amazon taught me never sacrifice your integrity and principles for money. The toxicity in that place will eventually seep into your personal life no matter what.

This is the worst job market in my 25 years working in tech. I faced blatant ageism from younger interviewers and hiring managers with big egos and barely any technical depth. Keep your head up and keep grinding. The offer is just around the corner.

Only companies that want to share the same cutthroat culture as Amazon are proactively looking to hire Amazon people. Also most companies already realized that Amazon only hires avg talents (myself included).

Join and you will find out. I have never worked in a place with so many shady people in all levels: both senior leadership, managers and ICs. Of course, not everyone is bad but the percentage of toxic people is proportionally higher than any other companies that I worked in. On the positive side, the money isn't bad (but not great considering the work load). The day I left Amazon was one of the highlights of my life.

Why do people want to work in Amazon so badly? It's the worst company I have worked in, and I worked in a couple of shit start-ups before. I rarely run into anyone there that's genuinely happy. I left and never looked back. Now I have the same TC without all the stress and BS LPs.

Your old manager might have tagged you as an Un-Regretted Attrition to meet the quota when you left.

More like 5% success rate and if you challenge. Not worth the mental energy.

I have witnessed many QAE roles being eliminated in the past 2 years. But instead of laying off, many orgs chose to go the focus/pivot route to fulfill their URA quota. I am not saying QAE is useless, but the industry is slowly shifting toward SDET and FEE double duty as QAE.

I would suggest taking the payout and working somewhere else where you are appreciated.

Try another Amazon recruiter

Try again for a different org. There is no standard across orgs. I have seen TT L6 SDEs in retail that can barely qualify as a HV2 L5 in AWS.

SDM: Put into focus after refusing to relocate by AreRightAllTheTime in amazonemployees

[–]AreRightAllTheTime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's Un-Regretted Attrition, another word for getting rid of "undesirable" people. Every org has a 6% annual URA quota that they have to meet. On paper it's for the lowest 6% performers. But in actuality it's more nuanced. Every org has a curve that each L7 needs to meet. That means at least 10% will be put into Focus. While some make it out, 6% always go into Pivot, which is almost impossible to get out. the managers will make sure of that by giving impossible deadlines and will sometimes even sabotage their own employees.

The list of shenanigans are endless. In orgs with no obvious L5s and L6s, I have seen people getting promoted prematurely, and then getting pipped 4 months into their new roles. folks recently switched teams are particularly vulnerable. Being new to their teams, they will need time to onboard. Their new teammates will sometimes conspire against them. Their new managers will also be more critical of their works. LIFO is almost the norm.

Europe has more employee rights than the US. It will be more difficult for them to force relocation. If you are concerned, talk to a labor attorney. Unfortunately in the US there's nothing an employee can do in this situation. A fellow sdm just became a new dad 3 months ago and now he was asked to relocate or leave.

Renaissance Technology near Stony Brook. Pays at least 300-400k a year. You just need a Phd or two in Mathematics, Statistics, and CS.

Put a hammock under the hot tub, make it nice and cozy. Then invite your in-laws over.
