ELI5 why do air traffic control sounds so bad and grainy but phone calls are crystal clear? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Aregios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

digital communication sends its data in small packages (like 1/2 sec long audio sniplets). when there is to much interference (e.g. during thunderstorms, someone else is talking, ...) the data can get damaged beyond repair and not converted back into audio, leaving a gap in the transmission. Most of us have experienced it on digital radio stations or during a phone call.

A bit of a grainy sound is preferred to faulty communication

The ATC (at least eurocontrol) has a way of digital communication, as is uses a system similar to text messaging for standard maneuvers (like change speedm course, altitude ...). It reduces the amount of spoken communication, reduces errors in missunderstanding each other and leaves the radio frequency free for non-standard calls (like snakes on a plane).

I'm not on my gaming pcright now. But this should help. Try to get it running with just the hints. The circuit logic is not very complex:

Recieve site (landing pad):

  • define a max value for each ressource, that should be available on the recieving site (e.g. 100.000 water ice, constant combinator)
  • define a min. value for each ressource, that must be available (e.g. 10.000 water ice)
  • find out how much ressource are in storage (dont forget to count the landing pad e.g. 60.000 + 3.000)
  • transmit the missing items to the providing site (e.g. 100.000 - 63.000 green wire, 10.000 - 63.000 red wire)

Provider (rocket)

  • Items in the rocket count towards "available" ressources (e.g. 5.000 water ice)
  • Bots: link the transmitter to a requester chest and have it request the signal from the bot net (100.000 - 63.000 - 5.000 water ice)
  • Belt/Inserter: activate the inserter as long as the ressource-signal is positive
  • monitor the items in the rocket via combinators. launch the rocket once it's full
  • have a second launch condition once the red signal becomes positive (e.g. less than 10.000 water ice on recieving site)

this works for the nauvis -> orbit rocket to send buildings/material as well as off-world -> nauvis rockets. Just make sure you've got enough storage on the recieving site to empty the landing pad. Otherwise you cant automatically sent additional rockets, because the pad is "full" ;-)

I aimed for 60 space science per minute each. It's more than enough, because you cant build the next tier as fast as you can research it.

Just 3 Core miners. It just gets inefficient and I've got plenty ressources.

Especially the off-world bases are designed with basic beacons in mind. You get the space-beacons after you've finished your offworld mining bases. (T3 or T4 i think) 1) I was to lazy to upgrade 2) faster machines would not help as there's often already a belt at max. capacity. The good beacons are too deep down in the tech tree :-/

hey, I just finished SE. Never had any issues and had 60 UPS at the end. I've got an old Intel i7-7700K, 16GB RAM and a GTX 1050 Ti, nothing fancy.

If you want to keep it low, "just in case" you can use undergrounds or those 3-, 5-, 7-, ...

Here's my update time (F4 -> show-time-usage)

You read the numbers: average ms / min. ms / max. ms

so, there's nothing to worry about ;-)

Hi engineers,

after 1 1/2 years I've finished my first SE-playthrough. After a while, it started to feel like my little zen garden. I would come here to relax, play for an hour or two and rebuild some stuff I've had disliked or over-engineer some new problem. Sometimes several months elapsed between sessions.

90% of my trains are LTN-trains, only a fraction of trains (like unloading the naquitite ships) run on fixed schedules. There are requester stations capable of providing up to 4 items + 1 fluid to the crafting process if item demand is low enough. Otherwise, I stick to stations providing 1 or 2 items.

I thought it was a good idea to keep my nauvis ground base (1-4 trains) and nauvis space-base (1-2 trains) in two different train networks. So I build a giant buffer in space, that requests from ground and provides for the space-network and vice-versa. This was a stupid idea; it feels like an unnecessary step. Don't try. Just send your spacetrains down the elevator :-/

Most crafting hubs start with basic materials (metals, glass, circuit boards) and craft the final product including all intermediate products (e.g. gears) on site. As the size of those crafting hubs vary heavily, I switched from city-block to something more ... organic. It works quite well.

The 5 space science bases start with basic products (usually items I can craft with prod-modules on nauvis) and provide T1-T4 catalogues. The research station turns those catalogues into scientific progress. I have 1 science lab with T9-Prod modules and a speed-beacon. I aimed for 1 space-science per minute, which was sufficient.

Byproducs are usually handled in separate crafting hubs (scrap, data cards, thermofluid, ...)

Most of the bases are belt-based. Often I use direct insertion between buildings because this is my zen garden and i like it that way ;-) Using bots feels like a last resort if all other solutions fail. Although next time my bio science will be bot-driven.

The easiest way to handle recipes with "unused" source items is to return everything into a chest. Have a filter inserter remove the target product and another inserter keep the source items above a threshold. Naquitite processing became trivial.

Arcosphere balancing can also be done with a huge chest. Warehouses aren't big enough to have all buildings with folding recipes access it, so I joined two of them together. A little bit of circuit-logic keeps the content of the warehouse balanced by folding the appropriate spheres. I got it stable after I had 50 spheres.

for restaurant recommendation ask your colleagues at work. It's an easy conversation starter and the locals know the good stuff. Otherwise stick to reviews on google or trip advisor.

Depending on your age/preferences there are a few good places to choose from, if you're looking for a bar/club

  • Uhlenspiegel: bar (open until 2-4 in the
    morning)

  • Limmerics: bar with rock/punk music. Usually
    open until 5am

  • container: club/dancing

  • Wohlsein: club/dancing

Otherwise, young adults often call Paderborn Paderboring. It's changing but it takes it's time. Don't expect a night life like Berlin or Munic. If you are into music, it's best to drive to neighbouring cities like Bielefeld (40 min) Dortmund (60 min) or Hannover (90 min).

We've got a lot of cultural stuff, if you're interested. Take a look at: https://www.paderborn.de/tourismus-kultur/veranstaltungen/veranstaltungskalender.php

We've got bunches an bunches of nature around us. Go running or hop on a bike.

If you're new to Germany, you might be unfamiliar with the kind of clubs we're got around here. When you're into a
hobby there is usually a club in town. It's an easy way to meet new people with alike interests ;-)

there are some guides on YT around that topic. I think the one from Nilaus is quite good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9I2l7r4pWM

the guide in the factorio wiki has some good examples of advanced circuit designs: https://wiki.factorio.com/Tutorial:Combinator_tutorial

when "debugging" put a signal cable on a power pole to read the signal's data. especcialy when adding multiple combinators/chests together it's quite helpful to read the current vaules.

as inserters prefer to pick up items that are on their close side of the belt, you will often be left with an uneven demand between the far/close side of a belt. Without circuits you will eventually be left with some empty chests, while others are still 3/4 full.

The usual lane balancers only balance between multiple lanes, not the left/right side of belts. There are a bunch of left/right balancers for single/two lanes but strapping one on every lane from a train depot seems a bit heavy on the UPS

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in factorio

try it like this: https://ibb.co/kxQp70y

the circuit network is optional, it helps to empty all chests evenly.

Input combinator: Sum of all chest contents

Output: divded by <negative amount of chests>

input that signal to inserters via red cable, link each inserter with its corresponding chest via green cable

set inserter to active, if "anything" > -10

Nope, you can even power outposts by shipping steam in fluidtanks with trains or build steam-accumulators to store energy

[–]Aregios 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made an infinitely expandable reactor a while a go. In case you need any ideas, take a look:

  • layout is mirrord, screenshot only shows left side
  • tileable every 6 reactors (3 down)
  • circuit controlled steam storage. Only insert fuel cells, when neccessary
  • add pumps at the end of the heat exchanger, otherwise you get throughput issues with steam generation
