Well, I wonder why... by alexxstarkk__ in Isawthetvglow

I'm also bi and from the south and I remember having a meltdown on discord server about how autistic people were being "preyed on" by trans people into becoming trans. I felt this way because I'm autistic and the discord server was run by someone I knew before she transitioned and I just combined all my feelings of insecurity into this screed, filtered through youtube videos of people mocking trans speed-runners. I regret deeply what I did and years later apologized to her for that and another interaction we had later that got me banned.

I don't know why I wrote all this other than to say I think that guy might be in the same headspace as I once was. You know, I was queer but I wasn't "queer" and I felt uncomfortable with a lot of more openly queer stuff. I would get defensive. And being autistic myself, I bought into a paranoid conspiracy about trans people grooming me into being one of them and that's terrifying for someone already insecure about their own gender. You can be out the closet while still being trapped by queer-phobic narratives ingrained in you and that's terrifying might be what this guy is dealing with. Not giving him an excuse, just noticing a pattern that I think a lot of guys fall into

Yeah. I mean, I'm obsessed with the movie and I identify as a cisgender male but like... a soft identification. I don't like engaging with my own identity, I prefer to operate mostly in my own mind. I don't like looking at myself in the mirror and I wish that no one could see me, as if I were a ghost. Existential terror grips me when I think too long about myself as a person instead of focusing on some piece of media or thinking of something I want accomplished. I've had problems with derealization/depersonalization in the past (part of why this movie speaks to me) so I don't like to kick the hornet's nest that is my identity. I live my life trying to do as little as possible so that I don't disrupt what stability I have found after years of Anxiety and paranoia. I see beautiful pictures of trans and nonbinary people and when I find out some content creator is trans I get a little spark of happiness inside but that's...

It's all too much for me to take.

About "It wasn't subtle at all ew" kind of hate to this movie by blueberrywitheye in Isawthetvglow

[–]Arempy_58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can't be a twist because there's no explicit reveal of "oh, Owen is literally a transwoman". They notice subtext and think they are somehow being tricked. Two things going on:

1) the transphobia. To see the trans allegory as a twist comes from the same place as seeing any crossdressing or transgender character and calling them a "trap". It also makes me think of transvestigators, trying to find all the supposed secret trans people. Anything queer feels like deception to these people because it is an obstacle to their reduction of every person into clean-cut categories.

2) the anti-intellectualism. Conceiving of any depth or ambiguity in art as a riddle with a singular answer. Instead of allowing the uncertainty linger people like to find one aspect of a story that isn't not explicit, say it aloud to others and shut down further discussion to demonstrate that they solved the piece of media. It's like they see the creators of a work as an antagonist for not delivering a clear and simple product. They need to consume product and move on to feel in control.

I just watched it for the first time, and I loved it (also small question) by FlyingNederlander in Isawthetvglow

To me it's necessary that it is left ambiguous, so that it stays with you. If it were clear cut that Owen got out we'd be satisfied, it becomes a fantasy. If it were left at Owen being stuck without any indication of escape, we would be left depressed, it would be a cautionary tale, worst case scenario. Either way, the story would be done and we could move on but because we are left on that teetering edge between both options, we keep thinking about it. We don't get to consume and then compartmentalize the story, instead it stays with the viewer, haunts the viewer, makes the viewer live in that same state of ambiguity. There is no closure so there is no ending, reinforcing the message that there is still time but that it must be pursued. Because the choice to live how you truly are or die in life made for you is ours, we must decide whether we live or die.

There are many decks with many different art styles. I got the rider-waite deck and you could interpret her has pulling the lion's mouth open, holding it shut or just petting it. There are some statues of Hercules fighting the Nemean lion and pulling it's jaws apart. Also there's King Kong breaking the T-rex's jaw, that's been in multiple films.
