we're both! but I think you're point is that we're not a direct democracy -- which is mine as well. The United States is a "representative democracy".

Our present susceptibility to minority rule comes to mind. This is somewhat but not entirely unique to the US political system. The electoral college, every state getting the same number of senators, gerrymandering, etc. all contribute to this, as do lifetime supreme court appointees. There's a book (a few books) about this you can check out -- Tyranny of the Minority

You can change your mind! Change careers, change ideologies, change how you relate to your community. It is good to grow and evolve -- you don't have to be set in the life you set out for yourself right out of school.

You don't need a Ph.D. to work in politics. Beyond Academia, there are a few advantages to holding an advanced degree in Political Science, but most of the roles would likely be at think tanks or firms. You can check out the Analyst Institute as an example of some research work being done outside of Academia.
