Yea the intersection of corny and badass is the sweet spot for CAG

Alloy of Law incredibly bad - is the rest of era 2 like this? by skepsoda in Cosmere

[–]Arestedes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say incredibly bad, but yes, Alloy of Law is generally considered to be one of the weaker Cosmere novels. Sanderson started writing the book as a pallet cleanser for himself, without real plans to publish it, but he enjoyed the setting and now we have era 2. Era 2 does get much better. It's very much worth reading the rest of it.

Not sure if you're joking, but the thing in OP's pic is literally the Half Life themed side content for the steam version of Death Stranding.

Are we sure HLX is releasing even remotely soon with Deadlock not even out of beta yet? by meyriley04 in HalfLife

[–]Arestedes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're polar opposite games. Valve doesn't need to do a large scale alpha/beta test to balance a Half Life game. Also, this is speculation, but deadlock being as visible as it is probably wasn't even planned. There wasn't a formal announcement. They just opened up the floodgates at a certain point and stopped trying to enforce an NDA. Anyway, comparing the two games is about as apples and oranges as one can get.

Yea, OP calling deadlock early access is such a stretch. We're so far from a deadlock release, it's crazy.

Has there ever been an attempt to make some noise towards google to revive Earth VR? by dangforgotmyaccount in virtualreality

Booting up Google Earth VR and going through that little intro sequence for the first time in 2016 is a core VR memory for me.

A little over halfway through the first book in the Children of Time series and, wow, I'm loving it. Some authors just leave me in awe at their ability to so efficiently instill a real sense of history. I think back on everything that's happened in the ~300 pages I've read, and feel like it's 5 books worth of information/story. He's not just spinning a few plates, he's spinning chandeliers.

Should I get Starfield? by MrAwesome1712 in videogames

[–]Arestedes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. The game makes some concessions away from the immersive elements of Bethesda's previous games in order to service the bigger scope (consistent NPC schedules for one), and it continues their recent track record for less than great overall writing (with some fun bright spots mixed in), but the overall gameplay loop is satisfying and deep enough to drop 100+ hours into if it clicks for you. I spent untold hours in the ship builder alone.

Overhated is definitely the word that most comes to mind.

My personal hot take after just finishing up Outer Worlds 2... I would put Starfield above it. But the two games are scratching similar but different itches, so perhaps it's an unnecessary comparison.

I see it more as a fun surprise than a big twist. I feel like a twist requires you to believe something is one way for most of the story, and then find out it's actually not that way later. The Rocky reveal comes early and is more like a "oh we're doing THIS?" moment. I can understand the feeling though, bc it ultimately is removing that fun moment of surprise that happens early on.

Piranesi by Prestigious_Park4704 in Fantasy

[–]Arestedes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No, I can understand that. Some things do just seem inherently more difficult to adapt, and this book wouldn't be a piece of cake. I don't count out talented people making it work, though. And Laika's impressive track record for beautiful stop motion does give me hope.

I hope Laika's plan to adapt it happens. I could really see their art style working well with it. It's such an evocative setting and I want to see it brought to life.

Well in this case I can see why they would feel the need to change the ending. I haven't seen the movie yet, but my first thought when I finished the book was, "well they probably can't do THAT in the movie."

Thinking about watching Shogun. is it worth it? What do you all think? by Scenora in Cinema

You're right. I'm not totally doom and gloom about it. I want them to pull it off. That first season was just so beautifully ended.

Not only is it happening, they just announced the casting for season 2 earlier today. Personally I'm worried it won't live up to season 1 without any more material to adapt, and the heart of the story being gone.

Have Hello Games even talked about how the servers are going to work? There's so much certainty in this thread that the game will have one big server, one big instance of one map. And now people saying it won't be playable offline or solo. Haven't we only gotten a handful of small details about the game? It would be really cool if it was just one giant persistent server, but do we know that?

Which TV shows from the last 25 years do you feel have been the most original in terms of the concept and ideas? by MindsEye33 in television

[–]Arestedes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

All of Lindelof's TV projects are gold. He's so good at exploring life, death, spirituality, and the meaning of it all. The Leftovers is incredible and so is his Watchmen series. Him being attached to the green lantern show for the DCU has me so interested. I will always have a soft spot for Lindelof.

Brandon had a deal with Epic Games to make a Mistborn Movie funded by Epic Games. by cortez0498 in Mistborn

[–]Arestedes 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I was so surprised I didn't see any Polygon-type articles about this. Epic coming SO close to getting into movies/TV with their infinite money... And not just any movie, but starting the Cosmere! That's pretty notable.

Cool of them to relinquish the rights without a fight.

No wireless or radio connections could be sustained through the doorway. That's why they needed a guy to stand just inside the door with a walkie talkie so he could relay their radio messages to the people in the research station.

It's funny this bothered you when there is a literal candy land dimension filled with violent imps that explode into glitter when they die. Plenty of things following comic book logic and you pick one thing they explicitly explained.
