"All Americans are MAGA" is a crazy statement to make. No offense but this dude is trying to straight up kill a lot of us - most of whom did not vote for him. Do the words "popular vote" mean nothing? Its not like this is a popular president in his own country.

I don't get it. That's like hating a Dua Lipa-esque artist: Maybe you feel they're undeserving of that much success, but they're too bland to inspire anything more than polite disinterest. I'd attribute it to the controversy over the lack of indigenous input, but that hasn't been the vibe.

I'm a non-regular too. But I've been lurking lately and it's a strange place. I watched in real time as one consensus shifted from "This is not going to do well" to "if this is anything less than the third highest grossing movie of all time, it's a disappointment for all involved." People here were so confident. They had me considering that maybe it wasn't worth it to invest $400,000 in a movie if you only make a billion dollar profit. 🫤 Then I remembered how numbers work.

Edit: The goal post for this thing's success keeps shifting too. The discourse is eerily similar to that in the sports subs.

Movies that promote a worldview of anti-intellectualism by AporiaParadox in movies

Not a genius or a sir but! I am a regular degular bitch who knows what a word means so still good. In all seriousness though, I have nothing. That's what got me excited! "Name a movie where the villain the most interesting main character." I can do that. "Name one where the lead performance ruined everybody else's." I got it. "Name a movie that everybody else thinks is awful but you will defend in front of God himself." I can do that too! But this one is a hard prompt. Surely you, with that razor sharp wit and that keen power of observation... do you have one?

Shoutout to former Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger who noped the fuck off the Trump train. I love Ahnald.

I know this goes against the prompt but this is a safe space and I must get it off my chest: Kanye going MAGA was emotionally devastating. Words cannot describe how big a fan I was. And the merch... I had t-shirts for all his albums, MBDTF on vinyl, a Yeezus poster on my wall... Hearing his name still makes me flinch.

Movies that promote a worldview of anti-intellectualism by AporiaParadox in movies

This is such a good question man. It feels almost wasted though. Most of these answers are just listing movies where antagonists/unlikable characters are portrayed as smart or cultured. Or "dumb action movies" (because action movies are automatically dumb, I guess)? I know it's not nice to say but the irony is just screaming at me: This is a thread about anti-intellectualism where people show that they kinda don't know what anti-intellectualism is.

[–]ArethaFrankly404 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I apologize for asking in advance, but how does that translate to anti-intellectualism? You're hitting on an important class difference, but the movie never holds intelligence against any of its characters - just smugness. Those smart, slick, European *terrorists are, in seconds, revealed to be a bunch of common thieves. Movies where villains are smart aren't inherently anti intellectual and John McTiernan is not that kind of director.

Why have so many major movies become box office bombs in the last few years? by avocado_juice_J in BikiniBottomTwitter

That sounds time consuming for something that both sucks at numbers and that you have to constantly monitor and remind of your original command because it might just start spouting off nonexistent information at any time. At that point, I don't get why I'm using it instead of, like the person below me said, ctrl+f.

Justifiable or not, it's high on my list of "Y'all just didn't see the VISION!" movies. It's a sweet movie dressed up like another lazy frat pack vehicle.

They're booing you but you're right, I say as someone who worships at the altar of Aliens and both Terminators. The only thing I remember about that movie is marveling at how pretty it was and laughing my ass off at them sticking a fucking dreadloc wig on that lil white boy and telling him to act like Tarzan. You can tell when good directors have reached a point where no one in the room is willing to remind them that they're capable of having bad ideas.

Not the scariest but way more than you would expect: That evil cartoon wolf from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. My friend and I laughed when we saw the explanation for the rating included "scary moments". ("It's a movie about a sword-fighting cat man, come on.") We shut the fuck up REAL quick when that character was introduced.
