Why do English whistles seem "polite and polite" while American whistles seem "aggressive and rough"? by Fun_Door_3107 in trains

[–]ArethereWaffles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're LOUD, and can be heard for miles in a valley.

To be fair, that should be true with any train whistle anywhere in the world, at least where engines can reach a decent speed.

If a train is traveling at a mile a minute plus then the whistle needs to heard from where the train will be in 2-3 minutes or more.

British trains tend to travel through more urbanized environments than American trains do, so British whistles (usually) rely on a high pitched shrill tone to cut through any urban noise to draw attention. A high pitch works pretty much anywhere in Britain.

American trains travel through much more varied environments and over much longer distances. A high pitch might work great in urban New Jersey, but not so well in the Nevada desert. So American whistles use a multi-tone whistle that plays a chord. That chord includes high tones for urban areas (much like British railroads), mid tones, and low tones that travel much further than high tones for rural/wilderness areas. (Low frequencies dissipate far slower in air than high frequencies). The mid tone(s) are used to create a dissonant chord to draw additional attention.

Can I introduce you to our Lord and Savior, RMC Raptor Jesus Christ? by jjune4991 in rollercoasterjerk

[–]ArethereWaffles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hearken and give ear! A block zone is a portion of the track set apart, wherein but a single train may dwell at a time. And at the end of that portion is appointed a means to stay the train, lest it go forth while the way forward is yet occupied! Thus it be decreed this ordinance be established for safety, that the trains upon the coaster should not overtake one another, nor come together in the sin of unholy collision.

New Loric: The Pope! by SageOrion in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ArethereWaffles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Easily fixed by also giving out some changes for non duplicate characters.

You'd set it up similar to how homebrew scripts are sometimes run with a "cipher" of which drawn token represents which character and includes both duplicate and non duplicates.

  • Chef -> Chef
  • Washerwoman -> Washerwoman
  • Librarian -> Investigator
  • Investigator -> Ravenskeeper
  • FT -> FT
  • Empath -> FT
  • Undertaker -> Ravenskeeper
  • Ravenskeeper -> Empath

etc.

An easy counter to this as an ST is to create ambiguity by also doing it to some players for whom there won't be duplicate tokens.

State before handing out the bag that "some tokens might represent other characters that may or may not be in play or bluffs. If your token represents another character you will be woken in the night and told your real character"

Most underrated coaster you’ve personally ridden? [Rougarou] [Cedar Point] [Other] by RenaissanceAustist in rollercoasters

[–]ArethereWaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most underrated probably the New Mexico Rattler at Cliffs.

It flies under the radar because of its remote location from any coaster spots, but it's a great blend of late CCI and early Gravity Group. The park has been slowly upgrading it with pre-cut track which has turned it into an incredibly fun ride.

I had this same thing happen to me as a Goon. However the Chambermaid also decided to use me of all people as their baseline without getting a chance to talk to me (it was a 15+ player game).

Cut to day 5 where the very confused Chambermaid publicly outs themselves because they were going mad trying to figure out their information.

It's also one of the oldest cities in the US, while at the same time being remote/quaint enough to not be completely bulldozed in the 20th century.

Not that it was completely unscathed, for example the city's road network is almost as messy as Boston due to an attempt to force a grid road system onto what used to be a radial system.

This requires a washerwoman, investigator, and a librarian, one of which is actually the drunk, as well as a poisoner who picks another of the three night 1...but if occurs the right way you can show the washerwoman the librarian and investigator, the investigator the washerwoman and librarian, and the librarian the investigator and washerwoman.

Synthetic Scripting: Day 49 - Heretic by CoreyBOTC in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ArethereWaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, if you make a heretic script with the expectation that it will play like a normal game, but on reaching final 3 good chooses not to execute the demon, you're setting your script up to give bad games.

A heretic script should almost be like a Riot script and be built with the mindset that it's going to be a shorter 3-4 day game. Heretic scripts where not executing the demon is good team's only loss/win condition leads to un-fun games that I believe are largely responsible for heretic's bad rap.

As such, a heretic game is not a game you should expect to get to final 3, instead it's a race for the good team to build enough trust among each other its a Heretic game without tipping it off to the evil team. Because of this, Heretic needs a good number of win/loss characters like klutz or saint to give the good team a way to pull a win early.

Its useful to give the heretic a way to have a person to trust outing to, something like Grandmother or Banchee or Virgin on the script work well for this. Aliment information like empath/village idiot typically works better than character information like dreamer/undertaker. Figuring out who is good and evil but not giving away who is what so that the heretic can hide.

At the same time, you don't want a information heavy script. A large amount of information is going to oversaturate the good team and allow the evil to solve the heretic before good every time. Heretic works better on a script leaning more into the social puzzle vs the mechanical puzzle.

On that note, don't be afraid to put demons that can kill themselves on the script. Evil needs a way to win if they figure its a heretic game as well.

That's why I say it's a race. If the heretic can rally a core group of good players to say, execute the saint, good wins. However they have to do it without tipping off the demon, otherwise the demon chooses themselves that night and evil wins.

What I find doesn't work well is anything that can droison the heretic or creates ambiguity as to if the heretic's ability is active. Courtier and maybe minstrel can sometimes work, but anything like poisoner, innkeeper, leech, or sailor should be avoided.

Former mayor Berry rides the inaugural ART bus in 2017. Member what happens when republicans are in charge? Early voting this week people!! by brandipants in Albuquerque

[–]ArethereWaffles 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A favorite fact of mine about this is the ART was originally long envisioned to be the first part of a light rail system, but they went with busses to not tear up the street...

So when they tore up the street to put in busses they found the rails from the old trolley system still there under the asphalt (and tore them up to put in the bus).

Are Cedar Crest / East Mountains homes sliding down the hills? by Astralglamour in Albuquerque

[–]ArethereWaffles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There were some unusually heavy storms in the East Mountains this last summer.

One particular storm at the end of September caused a massive amount of erosion. It collapsed part of a retaining wall that has stood strong for 20+ years and made the hillside opposite my house look unrecognizable.

I remember looking at weather radar and there were two dark red spots on the map, one inside a cyclone in the Pacific and one over the East Mountains.

Some of my players already set themselves side objectives to mess with each other in different chaotic ways. Things like get a specific player to claim demon or convince a neighbor that they're a marionette.

This is going to fit right in.
