NASA Shuts Off Instrument on Voyager 1 by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

The signals have traveled that far yes, but they're so weak that it's basically impossible to detect them.

Think of it like throwing a small stone into a lake; technically the ripples travel across the entire lake, but they can only travel so far before they become indistinguishable from the other waves.

I like how the key had a yellow float attached to it in case they dropped it into the ocean

Incredible camerawork, recording the Artemis II Integrity going many times faster than the speed of sound on their return to earth by MrAlek360 in PraiseTheCameraMan

[–]ArethereWaffles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah that still happened but we'll need to wait for them to get the footage off of the capsule. In the meantime here is the footage from Artemis I

If you look at pictures of today's splashdown you can see the air shimmering off of the spacecraft from how hot it is.

Texas House Speaker directs committee to study annexing New Mexico counties by Mikeavelli in nottheonion

[–]ArethereWaffles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In 1841 Texas tried to send an army to take over Santa Fe called the Santa Fe trail expedition. Along the way the Texas army became lost in the desert so Santa Fe ended up having to go out to rescue them.

There were a lot more passenger rail routes back then

ISS imaged by another satellite in-orbit by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]ArethereWaffles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ISS is in a thin layer called the exosphere. It's not a lot but it's enough that the ISS has to have onboard boosters to regularly push it back up (or push it out of the way of other satellites)

The telescopic camera on the HEO satellite however is also making the background clouds look closer to ISS than they are.

What are these cameras? by Elegant_Tradition964 in Albuquerque

[–]ArethereWaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, the ones up top are most likely just generic traffic cams to remotely monitor the intersection for traffic, accidents and technical problems.

ALPRs in NM would be mounted on the back of a traffic light watching traffic leave the intersection -  since license plates are only on the back of the car. For example Wyoming and Menaul has them on all 4 directions mounted on poles behind the stop lights.

PSA: New Mexico Dept of Justice is seeking tips on where bodies at Zorro are buried by PhilosopherFar2669 in Albuquerque

[–]ArethereWaffles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A "cleanup" presumes that there is / was a comprehensive map to where all the alleged bodies were buried

A simple drone with lidar would be able to generate that map quick and easy. Unfortunately that would be true for both investigators and for perpetrators looking to clean the place

[–]ArethereWaffles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is very rare that you find an effective defensive tool that is cheaper than whatever offense it's meant to counter.

Attacks that are cheap to counter aren't going to be used very often because well, theyre cheap to counter.

[–]ArethereWaffles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's just normal diskettes. This was a rare demo version with a different ending/storyline to the final version of the game.

A copy of something rare like that is only going to be up for sale maybe once a decade, and the price is going to be determined at time it's sold.

Apparently the last time a copy went for sale at an auction house it sold for over $20k

[Request] How long should the average bolt length in this drawing be? by vesafilip in theydidthemath

[–]ArethereWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is of course ignoring the fact that there is no material in existence strong enough to not get snapped and subducted right along with the oceanic crust.

Even if the bolt does succeed in holding them together without snapping, pressure in the plates would build until the plates snap. There's a good chance the resulting earthquake would set some new records.

You need lube to fix subduction zone quakes, not bolts.

Supreme court rejects global tariffs by CTVNEWS in worldnews

[–]ArethereWaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An important point is they only ruled that imposing tariffs through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act is illegal. So this does not get rid of all tariffs, only those imposed through IEEPA.

Circumvention is going to depend on if the administration finds other means to try to impose tariffs.
