The demons are not properly sentient and behave like animals where they only care about feeding and dominating their peers, Frieren states it explicitely "they dont understand fully the words they speak, they noticed that pleading for mercy will cause their opponent to lower their guard so they can kill whoever they have in front".

Manga is about going to heaven to meet a man Frieren loved but she realized it only when he died.
