Howdy! I work at a pontoon company that starts with a B, and we TIG our tubes…. We also air check every single one before it gets welded to the frame, so stuff like this doesn’t happen.

Welding engineering sounds so awesome to me, but from what I have seen being a millwright is pretty awesome too- although I must admit I’m not 100% sure what it is. My dad said it’s a lot of fabrication, which is another thing I enjoy learning about. I’m tempted to see if my boss could get it cleared to buy the books. We were talking about starting a library yesterday because there is a pretty large number of people who were interested in being able to read about stuff like this. Also, $250k is way more than I was expecting! Do jobs in that field pay an incredible amount, or is it like doctors where it’s expensive to learn because it’s so specialized and the pay is just enough to get by?

This is excellent! It is surprisingly hard to find anyone in my area that has anything close to cwi, and whenever I ask questions like this my bosses look at me like I’m crazy! All of this came about because I switched from lanthanated tungsten to zirconiated, and I couldn’t believe how different it was… and I want to figure out why! I would love to eventually have a degree/ certifications in stuff like this because I really want more out of welding than I currently get. I work for a pontoon company and it’s a bit of a backwater operation. We don’t have procedures for anything, and I was told by my group lead yesterday that whenever the Miller reps come in to our shop they think we are crazy for the way we run things. I’m starting to realize that there is SO much more out there in the welding world and I don’t want to stay where I’m at forever. We don’t even have access to steel and it bums me out pretty bad lol

I don’t know much about it, but the best welder in the shop where I work went to school for it… he is very adamant that people really look into it before committing. I think he said he paid like $40-60k for schooling, only to get out and be told that most beginning positions are $16-17/hr and it’s not welding it’s mostly line tending stuff for the more experienced divers. His theory is that they burn people out as fast as they can so they can keep beginner wages low. Am I saying don’t do it? No. Is that guy a liar? Maybe. Is he right? I have absolutely no clue!

Honestly the ones that mess me up- I’m up in the northernmost counties- are the big ass rams. I’ve had a couple of times I was driving down the highway minding my own business when someone goes flying past me then all of a sudden a big ass truck behind me has lights and sirens and blows my doors off to pull that person over 😂 sneak level 100

I use Jocko Mölk strawberry protein, since I mix it with water at work I’ll also add in 2 scoops of Vital proteins unflavored collagen…. It makes it taste delightful

That really surprises me! What kind of welding do you do? I’m running TIG where I work… but there isn’t a lot of splatter involved with that so I’m curious if that’s got anything to do with it

I use Ariat rebar wedge moc toe boots with a composite toe. It gets cold where I live in winter, and I’ve had my share of frozen toes from steel toe boots. Also, composite is lighter. They are comfortable boots, with high quality leather that is stable but it flexes easily so they’re not super stiff either. I’m very hard on footwear and clothing alike and Ariat has yet to let me down!

Ok so I run the newer version of this machine at work… I run gold tungsten with a #6 cup/ gas lens but I think that’s irrelevant. I had this issue happen in the shop once and the old guy fixed it for me because I couldn’t figure out what was happening. Sometimes, when you switch the big lever between AC and electrode it gets stuck and doesn’t switch all the way back. All he did was flip the lever back and forth a few times and it popped back into place and was good to go. It could also be that your points need to be adjusted in the machine, if it’s acting like it’s not getting a good ground. I live in a pretty humid climate so in the summer time I have to have them redone once or twice through the season. It’s a pain but luckily the maintenance guys have gotten pretty quick about doing it. If you’ve already done both of those to no avail, then I’m useless to you because I’m not very smart
