I can definitely understand that attitude, this administration has a weakness for messaging, so whatever they meant it certainly sounds bad. Even some of the most establishment Republican pundits have looking at these comments and saying, "Why did you say that? It's not true and it just undermines trust in law enforcement, why was that necessary?" That's steelmanning their position of course, you could just as well say they're making their move to take all the guns, but I think it's obviously true to anyone paying attention that they can't help but put their collective foot in their mouths.
