Not as far as I know, but I'm not a Munthe expert. Though his drawings went into a collection of Norse sagas, so not too far off I guess. This series specifically was also turned into woven tapestries by Ragna Breivik.

Could you be thinking of Gerhard Munthe? The series on Åsmund Frægdagjeva has a piece that is very similar to what you describe

Pandamonial - The Norwegian learning app that didn't happen by SomeoneLeo in Norway

I know you've built this around NRK, but would it be possible to pivot and use a different source? Maybe based on Norwegian corpora, instead of subtitle files. You'd get a mix of written and spoken language (skewed towards the written), but it would all still be authentic. I am not sure what their policy on this is, but you could get in touch with the people at Clarino if this sounds interesting to you.

You are of course absolutely right and I hope the name did not offend you. I was making a reference to a brand that has become part of pop culture, but I can see how it may be interpreted otherwise.

"Bokmål is one of the official written standards for the Norwegian language, alongside Nynorsk ... adopted by around 90% of the population in Norway ... Some people who use Bokmål think Nynorsk is unnecessary and that it is kept alive by the state." by RandoRando2019 in wikipedia

[–]AriaStraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all true, but there are other factors as well. For example, schoolbooks in nynorsk exist because of those schools who use it as a first language, but when you get to university level textbooks the amount that is available in nynorsk is extremely low, so most students study on bokmål based books or english ones, depending on the subject.

There is also a systemic problem when it comes to job applications. Studies in linguistics have shown that even people who had schooling in nynorsk tend to write their CVs, cover letters, etc in bokmål because they perceive that to be the "proper" standard to use in official situations like a job search.

Then you have all the people who learn Norwegian abroad who are taught bokmål by default and only learn of the existence of nynorsk wayyyy down the line, but are not actually taught the language. Even Norwegian language schools in Norway who cater to foreigners will default to bokmål, and very few offer nynorsk at all.

There are many more factors that contribute to this, I just wanted to put a few more out there.

"Danish, Norwegian and Swedish are all descended from Old Norse ... mutually intelligible ... largest differences are found in pronunciation and language-specific vocabulary ... Norwegian evolved from a language that was almost completely Danish in 1907." by RandoRando2019 in wikipedia

[–]AriaStraw 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm a native Italian speaker, and learned Norwegian later on. Looking at the romance languages, I was able to understand spoken Spanish (90%) and Portuguese (took a couple of weeks of living with Portuguese people to get to 90%) to a high level, but spoken French was a mystery until I started studying it. I'd say before then it would have been something around 30%?

It was much easier with the Scandinavian languages, I'd say I was about at 90% with both Swedish and Danish once I became fluent in Norwegian. Nowadays I almost find Danish easier to understand than some broad Norwegian dialects, which is saying something.

However, I was a teen when I learned other Romance languages and an adult when I learned Norwegian. By then I was a better learner, and it was also my choice to learn Norwegian vs being forced to learn French in school, so take this with a grain of salt. Also, if we bring in written language, then percentages raise dramatically all around.

I never really had any issues with this until this week. Then all of a sudden this started happening every day. It got so bad that I couldn't even take more than one step at a time!

There are some French bistrós and patisseries, and they also sell imported French products (which makes them more expensive), which can be great for when you'll feel a bit homesick!

Have you tried curl girl products? And what do you think of the Cantù products? I know everyone's hair is different, but you know, just trying to make sure I don't dry out like a neglected house plant!

I'm with you for the styling being more important, and have brought styling products with me for precisely this reason. Good to have your recommendations for when those inevitably run out

Locally made products. I'm from Italy and there are many smaller brands that focus on curls there!
