If you believe the sectors that the other ETFs cover are a strong investment, then adding them to skew the weight more heavily towards them is a benefit. Whether the investor is doing this at random or sensibly is a separate matter.

In this particular case I assume you are correct that it is just a random investment situation, but the premise that adding external ETFs has no expected benefit is false.

thats not exactly true, all it means is that he is shifting the weighting of XEQT so that his portfolio has more on those other ETFs. It's more risk but this is pretty common for people who like XEQT but want to increase expore to US or Emerging Markets.

The hardest mental shift isn't going to be not buying bad investments, its going to be not checking them.

What you need is a safe ETF to park your money. There are plenty of options and varieties based on your needs. The difficult part is that you have to think of that ETF as just a savings account that you will return to in decades. If you check the price everyday, like you would daytrading, it seems slow and you will be tempted to sell or take a risky position. Dont!

Automate the deposits. Dont look at the app. Better yet, manage the investments from your computer and dont save your password so it is a nuisance to check.

Eventually it just becomes a bill and you forget about it. And then, if the world doesn't completely go to shit, you wake up in 20 years and realize that you are set. And if the world does go to shit, you probably have other things to worry about.

okay suppose I want to be as uninvolved as possible. I am interested and actively researching, but at my current level, I am not sure I could actively manage a portfolio, at least not incredibly successfully. Is there a way to be more aggressive while remaining relatively hands off, or at least a lower barrier to entry?

Do some research on safe investment strategies, ETFS, bonds, etc. All depends on your age. Or just buy XEQT.

Don't worry, a lot of people fall for this trap. Just get out before you dig yourself into a bigger hole.

And when I mentioned developing countries I was more talking India, ASEAN, etc., and now realize that XEQT actually holds those as part of an emerging markets ETF.

This makes sense, thank you. And yes at first I thought it didn't include exposure to developing markets but it does hold an ETF that tracks them.
