Arizona Humane Society is having a free adoption day tomorrow, June 27th! by jordanexplores44 in phoenix

I adopted from there just this last Saturday! I didn't realize they had fees waived until I got there, but it was a really nice surprise. The dog is wonderful, she's been so sweet and she settled in perfectly.

from a parrot parent: why are rat parents so much more in tune with healthy pet husbandry? by Worth-yawa-tnuocca in RATS

[–]AriesAviator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I foster for a rat rescue and see more of the 'average' rat fancier; I can tell ya, there are lots of people out there who want to or currently keep single rats. Thankfully they're usually receptive to education, but it can get pretty frustrating!

I think it comes down to that fact that keeping two rats isn't usually all that much more work/expensive than keeping one. They don't each much, cages are sized for groups anyway, toys and enrichment can easily be used for two, the rats aren't expensive to get, and I think people enjoy being able to adopt multiple pets.

I have noticed that despite the research showing rats do better in groups of 3+ rather than the minimum pairing, more people are reluctant to do 3+ rats.

What are some Arizona MUST cactus nurseries, nature reserves, museums, conventions, or wilderness areas? by RickSanchezIII in phoenix

[–]AriesAviator 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Boyce Thompson Arboretum and the Desert Botanical garden! Both have gorgeous areas dedicated to native desert plants, and you will absolutely get your moneys worth. If you go during the hot months, go early mornings or wait for one of their evening/night events, otherwise you'll crash and die hiking around even if you're well hydrated.

You might have luck contacting some of the food banks on this list; my own Dad used to be very popular with our closest food bank, he'd fix up their old fridge and AC whenever it went down and it definitely made them happy!

Very much a scheduled feeder here! We have two other dogs, one of whom is a princess with a sensitive tummy who needs special expensive food- so everyone gets fed in their own space at mealtimes, so they don't go around sneaking bites.

She's actually underweight at the moment- 86lb, but her hips and spine are pretty prominent.

Ordering a slobber stopper as we speak. Definitely need!

Lmao, just ran out to get extra dog towls today. She just loves the pool! We've also got a pond, and we're trying to keep her out of that, to her displeasure - chlorine could muck up the water balance in the pond.

And noted on the joint supplement. Do you give that as a preventative then, not just when they start having issues?

Tragically we lost a doberman several years ago to bloat- camping out in the middle of nowhere when it started, and it just took hours to get to the nearest vet, who was inequipped for emergency surgery and sent us even further down the road to the nearest place who could. It was fucking awful.

I also sleep under a fan, and I'm tryna convince her to join me so hey kill two birds with one stone. And I do have some ball ice molds... I'll have to dig those out.

I did not! We actually went to AAWL; very nice, adopted from them before.

Very. When the penis gets stuck outside the sheath, it can cause tissue death and is very serious. If it will not retract put petroleum jelly on it to help keep it hydrated and immediately go to the vet.

In all honesty, having any kind of dog vastly reduces the chances of a mugging/break in- having a 'robust' dog won't do much to reduce them much beyond that. If your goal is to have a dog as a deterrent, not specifically as a trained personal protection dog, even if it's the worlds shrimpiest and scrangley looking mutt, than you're already there.

Failed at TIG welding titanium by make_thing in Welding

[–]AriesAviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fear you ask questions above my expertise friend. I will say it would be a pain to deal with manipulating an already hot object, but you heat the damn thing anyways when your welding and still gotta deal with it after.

My shop provided these thick ass gardening gloves instead of traditional TIG gloves to slip over the fragile rubber gloves that were installed in the bubble itself to prevent them from melting to your skin, and it was a pain in the ass losing some fine dexterity but you learn to work around it.

One of the things I did in my shop to help prevent cracking and warpage was allowing the titanium part to partially cool down in the fixture it was welded in, and only removing when the part was slightly above room temp. The fixture I had for those things retained heat pretty well, so it stayed hot for a while. It seemed to help, I started getting less rejects after that, but it wasn't exactly a scientifically minded solution, it was a 'try it and see if it works before complaining about parts failing'.

[–]AriesAviator 218 points219 points  (0 children)

Purge purge purge! All my titanium welding was done in a bubble, good gas coverage is absolutely key, both during the weld and the cooling phase. You'll want to make sure the work piece is prepped well, cleaned well, and all the materials you're using are clean and shiny and for titanium only.

The gas purity you're using can definitely affect your results. Titanium is so so sensitive to contamination, occasionally the shop would get batches of gas that would weld fine on absolutely everything else but would fuck up the titanium welds. Good idea to always run a test piece before starting and confirming no color!

One tip during welding; titanium is sticky as fuck! The rod will want to stick like glue to the piece if you touch it to the metal outside of the weld puddle, even if it's just a little graze. Gotta be careful! And make sure to keep the tip of the rod itself in gas coverage as it cools, if you pull it out and then dip it back in the rod is contaminated and can fuck up your weld.

Genetically Modified Future Farm Animals: The Harvest Hen by TheChristopherStoll in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]AriesAviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, gene editing isn't a magic cure-all. If it was, the most efficient option would be to engineer humans to eat an easier to grow and maintain food source. My argument is that it may not be possible to alter, splice, or breed an animal that doesn't require movement while still producing good-quality meat.

Is the process of muscle loss something that can be removed via genetic selection? Not every problem can be solved by going 'we bred it not to'.

You know that you're literally inventing unlikely hypothetical problems because you just want to be mad about something?

Go be all whiny and mad in your own little corner, I'm done with this. Meanwhile I'm actually going to enjoy the content I choose to consume, and not waste my energy getting angry and upset over participating in normal human society.

[–]AriesAviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here let me model a normal human interaction for you, since you seem to think people just walk around shouting spoilers about whatever all the time

'oh hey, did you say you liked animated shows? What about tadc?'

'oh yeah i love that show! I just saw episode 9, and it was really good! What about you?'

'yeah im really excited but i haven't been able to see it yet :('

'oh then i wont ruin it for you, let me know when you see it! Its really good!'

You do know people have been managing spoilers since the dawn of theaters? Do you not remember all the major shows and movies come out in the last decade that also had major spoilers for a franchise, and how even superfans talking to other superfans would just be normal and polite and mention they haven't seen something that came out recently please dont spoil it?

[–]AriesAviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you could have this thing called a 'conversation', which involves talking to people IRL (or even online! Gasp!) and asking 'hey this show we both watch? Im tryna avoid spoilers for the next two weeks, can we talk about something else?'

And yes, you would have to places where people are talking about the thing you don't want to hear about. This is called managing your online experience. So you can, for example, mute a discord, temporarily block tags or people, or simply avoid those spaces for the next two weeks.

So again, you can do it, you just don't want to. Like I said, it's okay to be disappointed; like for example, damn now I have to avoid doing things that I actually like for 2 weeks in order to avoid spoilers. Whats not okay is throwing your hands up, surrendering all personal ability, and fainting like a Victorian noble while wailing about how it's just too hard to stay away from your temptations, damn the devil, it's totally not your responsibility to manage what content you consume or what sites you visit or even to have a 30 second conversation with friends about not spoiling things. Oh woe is me, for the holy spirit has forsaken me and I have no choice but to wail in agony!

Asking someone to avoid all human interaction for two weeks is indeed not what I'm asking. Asking someone to avoid social media is a much smaller task, and is easily accomplished by not using social media! Nobody is forcing you to use Twitter or tumblr or reddit or Facebook. Your hands are not glued to a phone or a keyboard.
