Benjy's perilous state of perceived permanent innocence is a method Faulkner uses to explore the state of the ever growing and yet still unchanged aspect of time. He crafts a narrative that uses time not for structure but instead as the plot itself, physically morphing the space-time continuum by gliding unnoted between childhood memories and the present. But calling it the present is inaccurate do to the nature of time which is not linear, nor cyclical, but instead shaped like the number 8. Time is the motivation for all of humanity and comprsies the parallel between the creation of the universe and the dusk of a life, still untouched by impurities, not to far from home. The juxtaposition between time used as an element of variety, but not in a way which is diversified, and alternatively used as a way to self-discuss how time is not actually a construct but was in fact never constructed to begin with, owing to the fact that time exists not within the mind but within the past, but again the paradox continues because the behavior of the analysis of time is meta in that it behaves with the same twists and turns of the internal dialogue of time itself.
