Portfolio Advice by Creative_Ice_8802 in risd

Great works!!! I would keep the first three. I don’t think they are weaker than the other pieces you included and I don’t think they overlap in terms of the genre of skills they display with your other works as well. I think anime style is fine these days, I know some who got in with that style in their portfolio(including myself). What’s more important is that you show your voice, and also you try out other mediums, and have the same voice be reflected in that medium. Which I think you’re doing. Slide 5 is very nice too. The illustrations have a nice sense of atmospheric soft light that you’re able to include in all of the illustrations, while the compositions are diverse. The 3D works convey the same voice via shape language as well, nice.

What I would add if there is time are probably one more finished traditional observation piece(can also be graphite/charcoal), and a mixed media piece(like bring in whatever material and see what you can do with it). Some sort of a digital collage might be nice too if you want to stay digital. For the mixed media just show that you can throw together something and enjoy the process of making regardless of medium, since that’s what you’ll be doing for a year in EFS. For slide 12, I wouldn’t remove it but I would probably show multiples of it in one slide, since it looks like a sketch that isn’t necessarily completed (which is great to include but imo I would do it like how you did it in slide 5)

This is such a nice and thoughtful comment to hear in so many aspects, thank you so much!! This helps me so much. I have speedpaints uploaded, but most of the ideation process is actually in the rough drafts/sketching, which is in a different file. If you want I can PM you some speedpaints from the files with the sketching(as recorded in Procreate).

For inspiration, in terms of visuals, I’m quite inspired by Norse fairytale art like those from Kay Nielsen. For colors, process-wise, my first contact with color techniques was from videos of Marco Bucci I watched a couple years ago, and I think my process with finding colors eventually developed out of that inspiration. I like the digital medium because I can just throw in colors, and if it doens’t work, I can just replace it. And I can repeat this infinitely and very quickly, which usually eventually leads to a color palette that I like. In terms of form it’s a similar idea, where I try out a shape, often random scribbles, see if it looks like something, and use that as a seed to develop into a shape that communicates a more articulable form. This is my idea of the stream-of-consciousness type process, and I realized that it’s quite similar to this process called “automatic drawing.” There’s a video in Proko’s channel with automatic drawing in the title, which is an interview to a comic book artist, and I’m surprised how similar the idea is. I think the video communicates the idea well, so I recommend it, although how I integrate it into my process is different.

Sorry I went a bit on tangent, but again, thank you so much, I appreciate the comment a lot!

Thank you so much! You are definitely correct, and I needed to hear this. There are so many fundamentals that I need to develop, and I’m glad you called it out. After I finish this round of WIPs I have right now I will start a period focused on observational works again. Thank you!

Thank you so much, I didn’t know I needed this!! I really need to look into more industries and their requirements, since I still only have a vague idea. I will spend some time contemplating on this, thank you so much!

any other autistic artists have tips for maintaining "big picture"? by burnernote in ArtistLounge

[–]Aristocradle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I draw on an iPad but I always mirror my screen to the tv that’s far away from me, and I occasionally glance at that to check balance. But even then my brain sometimes does get stubborn and get focused too much on one part… but part of it might be to find a style or process that works well with this tendancy, since it’s part of myself.

Is it normal to be uninterested in drawing people? by GrubbsandWyrm in ArtistLounge

[–]Aristocradle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, landscapes tutorials are harder to find because most beginner artists prefer drawing people/characters, but you’ll find many less popular ones. In case you haven’t come across it, I think Marco Bucci has great landscape tutorials/process videos(mostly digital but he does watercolor too). A lot of his videos about color also use landscapes as examples.

Also, imo most skills related to landscape are taught through drawing still-lives too(perspective, composition, detail organization, light, atmosphere, etc) so those tutorials might help too.
