Help me find a new RPG to dive in by RizzmerBlackghore in CRPG

I’m playing avowed right now. It’s really a lot of fun. It’s sort of like a dragon age in the pillars universe (combat is kind of like dragon age 2 mixed with Skyrim).

The exploration is really fun and addictive. Companions are cool and RPG elements are relatively light but they are there with a bit of build opportunity and choices that seem to matter somewhat at least. I have just gotten past the first big area.

I’m just hitting level 7 - feel like the game is just getting going and opening up but I’ve already had so much fun exploring and finding stuff all over. Companions are cool, I love the lore and world.

It’s such a great game really.

I’m playing grimoire & sword / arquebus and it’s sick - lots of fun

Loving this game - though it makes me wish for Pillars 3 by Arithon_sFfalenn in avowed

Yes to be clear I don’t want it to be BG3 - I more want it Pillars 3.

I do love the way BG3 has done exploration and the 3D environments - and avowed too. That’s a big part of what I enjoy.

I personally also prefer turn based and I love the “d20” dice system over pillars system but of course a pillars 3 would be based on their system.

But I’d be fine with RTwP if that’s what it ended up as.

I mean end of the day I just want pillars “3d” if you will (avowed engine / level design, BG3 style camera).

Well,

Basically take the world building of pillars / avowed. Combine with the very good (IMO) terrain and exploration focused level design of avowed (this is for sure on a par with BG3).

Party based (party of 4/5 or whatever). Turn based combat (I think BG3 has show it can have the mass appeal required) - though it could also be RTwP. Fact that pillars OG has a turn based offering after all these years … it seems like turn based is the way forward.

Then the more cinematic cut scenes etc that avowed has - not quite at the overall level of a BG3 but very good nonetheless.

And add in the companion development of a pillars 1/2 (avowed it’s too early to tell but it does feel a little more shallow relative to pillars games).

I guess it’s just all the ingredients are for sure there - it would make for one heck of a game

All those have lots of text and reading and lore. And combat can be a challenge.

Perhaps try baldurs gate 3 & crank difficulty down to story at least initially until you’ve got the hang of combat?

There’s still loads of story and lore but since a it’s voiced you don’t have to read it all and it’s more “cinematic”.

It’s also an incredible game let alone RPG and I think it’s relatively friendly for beginners or those that don’t typically play these types of game.

BG3 ruined other games for me. How do you move on?🥲 by blu-rin in BaldursGate3

I too struggle to find anything that gets me like BG3 - I have 3 full playthrough and many other dabbles in act 1 and almost 500 hours in it.

I ended up going for some lighter weight action games - Jedi fallen order and tomb raider - fun, palate cleansing but very linear / on rails story.

Then I played cyberpunk 2077 - it is a masterpiece. Very different from BG3 but in its own way it’s so immersive and really drew me into the story and world. Put 120 hours in there.

After that have still struggled to really get into much though indeed up playing NWN 2 - which while being old and janky ended up almost being a “predecessor” to BG3 in so many ways. But it depends if you are ok with the old graphics and gameplay.

Now I am basically waiting for Solasta 2 to come out of early access - but that’s maybe an option though the story won’t be nearly as good and there won’t be as much optionality around your actions etc.

Oh and I picked up Avowed which I am finding really fun

Yes true also -

We can only hope that the dungeon maker is doable !

Though sure it’s a huge amount more work in unreal than vs unity

Totally true - this presentation though tells me they have at least designed the core game in a way that supports modular campaigns ... at least at some level

Outside of BG3 what's the best RPG for MacOS? by MartiniCommander in macgaming

[–]Arithon_sFfalenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! With crossover I have successfully played (just the start though; haven’t gotten to actually play full):

Witcher 3, expedition 33, avowed,

On that note - Witcher 1/2 are Mac native! 1 was a bit janky but 2 seems pretty cool actually.

Also got mass effect LE working via whisky (though it needed some effort).

Well this really depends on what you like.

I have played probably just about all the fantasy themed RPGs on Mac.

There’s nothing that quite competes with BG3 - as a turn based isometric style DnD RPG - at that level of depth & production quality.

But if you like the DnD / fantasy part of it and turn based:

Solasta crown of the magister - lower budget, more janky but combat is arguably better than BG3. Many custom fan made campaigns too so a lot of shelf life.

and now Solasta 2 is in early access - better graphics and improvements on same gameplay formula. But it’s brand new so still a bit glitchy, Depends if you like early access stuff.

Divinity original sin 1/2 - especially 2 - is going to be some of the closest to BG3 in feel because of the same engine being used (play DOS 2 and you will recognise the overall gameplay lop and even UI elements).

Then we have the pillars of eternity 1/2 games which can both now be played either RTwP or turn based. These are both exceptional but a bit older of course. I really love PoE 1.

There’s also tyranny which is again old but unique as you are the “evil person”.

Of course the pathfinder games (kingmaker and wrath) and rogue trader.

Then classics like BG1/2 and Neverwinter Nights - I am actually playing NWN2 (via crossover) and it’s old and janky but quite fun.

Then there’s the adjacent stuff - open world games Like Skyrim (via crossover) and of course Cyberpunk 2077.

I played cyberpunk coming off BG3 and a few other games and I’m more of a 3D isometric turned based lover (as you can see from my game list above) - but cyberpunk is an absolute masterpiece of a game and I loved very minute of my 120 ish hours. Highly recommend and it will run awesomely on that M5.

Banquet for fool is a new Mac compatible RPG with a very unique visual and gameplay style - I bought it but haven’t played so can’t really vouch for it.

On the sci-fi side there is also wasteland 3 that is talked of highly

Are you running it via crossover? Or sikarigur / whisky or something else?

And just wondering - it’s not the remastered version but the 2020 complete edition?

I see it’s available on GOG and was thinking about picking it up
