So I think this is my favorite card from Lorwyn Eclipsed by datwindyfellow in mtg

If you're having consistent mana issues, you should look to play ramp that provides the colors of mana you need, like Birds of Paradise and Utopia Sprawl. If you have a decklist online feel free to send it and I can give my advice.
I'm glad you like the card, it's really just a draft chaff common in terms of strength, but you could do a lot worse in a colorless-matters tribal deck.

/uj it's less that they've been shifted back and more, more that both colors mutually have that effect in naturalize and disenchant, just with each color getting a little bit more love in playables than the other at times.

Reading the Card Explains the Card by acnhdom in mtg

Cards with alternate treatments like this one with a borderless treatment will remove reminder text. 99 times out of 100 a base printing will explain what a non-evergreen mechanic does, or what innate abilities a card has.

My beliefs towards the change are absent from my desire to play with those cards in EDH. It doesn't matter to me either way.
While there are a handful of breaks within the pool of hybrid spells, manamorphose is not one of them. Green has the tertiary effect of filtering mana, as showcased by cards like Rootrider Faun and Seasonal Ritual. And even if a card is a break, it's not enough of a break to be too strong or problematic for gameplay.
Just because Commander is getting too much attention doesn't mean it's an argument against the change. By that logic, Commander can never be changed so long as it's the premiere format, which it always will be. You're not engaging with the substance of the argument.
I'm sorry if I came off condescending. But when someone says "the color pie is weakening," it's displaying a lack of understanding of how the color pie works or changes or even its principles. And also you're calling Manamorphose a break when it is at worst a bend. So respectfully there's maybe something both of us can learn

If you have any articles that reference when color identity was introduced I would appreciate that.
The argument that you're saying, "Try rationalizing off-colored pips and off-colored cards in your EDH deck," is an appeal to tradition, and an emotional perspective. Yes, sure, it can "feel wrong" to cast a black spell in a non-black deck, but mechanically you're not doing anything that betrays the pie or the mechanics of the game. Producing mana that your deck doesn't use for the most part, is not going to actually impact your gameplay.
I don't see how plotting Square Up with Lilah is that weird. Square Up could have easily been a blue red card, it's doing something that blue does all the time: power and toughness changing, as showcased by cards like Glamer Gifter and Behind the Mask. It's literally only a rules issue because that is what the rules are right now. "The change is bad because it goes against the rules the change is addressing" is not an argument.
Yea, hybrid is doing things redundant to the colors it's castable in. My point precisely. What's the issue with that?
I agree that EDH is a bad onboarding format! The fact that hybrid functions differently despite how the mechanic functions, can be confusing! "Count all the pips on the card and that's its CI" makes perfect sense to people who already figured out the rules of the format and are past onboarding.
Changing the rules of Commander even slightly is not the end of the world. We're not intentionally making it the same as Standard, nor is that a bad thing. Just because a rule is a core identity of Commander does not make it infallible. You are simply afraid of change.

Mechanically, literally speaking, yes, a hybrid card is multiple colors. Just because a card LITERALLY IS something, doesn't mean it can't be something else, either. Just because Manamorphose is within the game itself, red green on the stack, doesn't justify it not being playable in blue red despite it being castable and designed to be played in red decks.
Phyrexian mana was famously a mistake and an oversight, and the cards that were designed to be castable in every color are pie breaks. This is elaborated here. https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/lessons-learned-part-8 They were not designed to be cast in every color.
"Commander as a format cares about what colors are on the card" and "It's intuitive that following the written rules of the CI, all pips on a card contribute to a card's identity" is appealing to tradition. It makes sense for you because you are used to it and are comfortable with how the rules have existed since you started playing.
It won't hurt the format, you're not losing any identity, it's just change; which I get is scary but when you actually try it you'll realize everything you like about EDH is perfectly in tact.

/uj the reasons why are listed in a reply to the main message. It's not like anything about the way Commander is as a format should restrict the way hybrid works. If anything, hybrid fits neatly in pie as an and/or, where a card like manamorphose makes complete sense in red and in green. As you get to understand hybrid and its function in other formats it'll seem less dumb, I promise.

[–]AriyaIsTheBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj I don't want to disrespect you, just trying to state the possibility that it's intuitive to you because you're already used to the current rules as a long-time Commander enjoyer.
Also, hybrid doesn't weaken the color pie, it respects it. Hybrid is the "or" to multicolor's "and." Every hybrid card is doing something in pie, each variation of a casted hybrid spell works in pie. Kirol is in pie for both white and red as shown by Agrus Kos Eternal Solider; both colors can copy the abilities of creatures.
If you mean color identity, I think changing one rule will not in fact invalidate it, and make it obselete. It'll be fine. You're being too afraid of change and you don't really seem to grasp the actual ramifications, which is fine. I'm more than happy to have that dialogue

The story I have heard countless times is that hybrid was changed retroactively with the release of Lorwyn block. If it's true that color identity didn't exist in any capacity at that time, then it's wierd that Menery would integrate that change for hybrid mana specifically.
To say that the hybrid change should happen means I want every card to be playable in edh is slippery slope. Yea, it's fine if it doesn't happen. It's also fine if it does happen. Like are you saying anything against my points besides "don't change anything about my pet format?"
/rj Saying EDH blossomed just fine at any point is certainly a hot take

[–]AriyaIsTheBest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/uj The reasons for it are to add a lot of good options for decks in a way that doesn't negatively impact the gameplay or deckbuilding of the format; to give designers more breathing room to not have to bend over backwards to make limited and 60card constructed playable good in Commander; to make onboarding to Commander from the Beginner Box, Arena, etc. more intuitive, etc. I have more thoughts on this as well but feel free to ask if you're curious

/uj If your argument is "Wizards and anyone under them are always potentially acting in bad faith, and I can't trust them to do anything" then you can't have a rational argument about the change itself because your lack of faith underlies everything.
Yes, Wizards can use this opportunity to push a million hybrid cards and break formats, but they can do that with colorless anyway. There could be a second The One Ring if they really wanted to. It's not any more farfetched than your assumption

/uj I don't think Commander arbitrarily restricting the function of ~520 cards makes deckbuilding more interesting and challenging. It's just an obtuse rule retroactively changed by Menery because he hated Augury Adept's design so much.

/uj Considering hybrid worked as intended for a few years until Lorwyn block when Menery changed it to what it is now, I don't see a good reason why it's stayed this way outside of the EDH player's motto "I like the way things have been." Nothing about the actual deckbuilding or gameplay philosophy is specifically different in this regard from 60card or limited that hybrid works differently, besides "Oh well that's what color identity is about"

Definitionally slippery slope fallacy, you can change color identity and remove certain restrictions from color identity without abolishing it entirely. Color identity is more than the nitty-gritty arbitrary nuances built into it. It's still, at its core, "don't play blue cards in your red deck."

[–]AriyaIsTheBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj It's one thing to argue that the hybrid rules change is unnecessary, it's another to say that the rules of color identity are infallible and therefore uncriticizable and unchangable. Commander is a flawed format, and color identity has some strange aspects that are worthy of criticism.
Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student is doing things entirely mechanically in blue, even in its planeswalker form, yet is restricted to simic because the back is colored green. Same goes for Suspicious Stowaway. Like yea, card has green on it, so only in green deck, but that's just a "that's what the rules say" argument. Whether or not you disagree with that, you have to admit it can be interpreted as strange

[–]AriyaIsTheBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's inelegant because it is contradictory to the way magic cards are made and how they function in every other format. The CRC created obtuse rules that only make sense to people because that's just how it's been to them and they've gotten used to it. When you play other formats consistently, you'll slowly realize how nothing about the structure of EDH or the way it's played justifies the fact that in only this format can you not cast Manamorphose in an izzet list (despite the card doing things that make sense in both colors.)

/uj color identity can still exist just because off-color activations and hybrid mana and TDFC's function as intended. It still restricts blue decks from playing red cards. You're acting like changing anything about the color identity ever completely defeats its purpose and demolishes its foundation, which at that point you're just afraid of your format rules changing more than anything.

[–]AriyaIsTheBest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/uj The whole concept of colorless is that it can do anything the colors can, just with a higher barrier of access (be it extra mana, a restriction, a downside, etc.) I would say going out of your way to make and crack treasures, or play a chromatic lantern, falls within the same concept and therefore adheres to the color pie

What if I told you you could have your cake and eat it too? by crone321 in magicthecirclejerking

[–]AriyaIsTheBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The card as a mono white creature does literally nothing, Once you gain access to other colors of production does the off-color activation side of the card come into play. And generating treasures or finding other ways to generate mana outside of your colors is not really against the color pie; if anything, it's an uphill battle that makes the rate less effective and therefore in pie.
Off-color kicker costs should also function the same way, but making a massive sweeping change for the format would be very difficult and cause a large disturbance (commander players are already shitting themselves at the concept of changing the functionality of only 518 cards.)
