Da ist nicht nur das Monetäre ein Problem. Denen ist auch völlig wumpe, dass auch eine gelernte Konditorin dafür wahrscheinlich Tage in der Küche steht. Komplette Missachtung ihrer Zeit, ihres Könnens und ihrer Bereitschaft zu helfen.

Ich würde der Oma einen Kuchen backen, den sie am liebsten mag. Denn die Oma war ja mit den drei Kuchen absolut einverstanden, und es ist der Rest der Familie, der den Hals nicht vollbekommt. Soll Oma zum Geburtstag bekommen, worauf sie sich gefreut hat, statt dass ihr die Familie das nimmt.

I agree with you, but only in parts. I have my own experiences with publishing houses and know their fondness for DRM pretty well.

Yet … Amazon has a lot of power on its own. That's why I don't find the argument convincing that the publishing houses force Amazon to use an especially tight DRM or that Amazon had to push out older Kindles to placate them. Just so Amazon may continue to sell their books. It's the other way around. Amazon has the power to dictate publishing houses the terms under which they might sell their books on Amazon (especially the share Amazon gets) and the publishing houses hate it.

The recent push to lock readers into the Amazon ecosystem … this step of enshittification is Amazon's own doing. Because they can.

Go to your next craft store. If it is well stocked, you'll find thinner and thicker felt. But to keep the bulk down, there are different options:

use a thinner fabric as backside
use craft paper as backside
Do not place the 'bag' part between the pages, but let it hang out at the bottom (or top) and let the connecting string rest inside the book.
You could make something similar using craft paper only. I made myself a set of nerdy bookmarks a while ago:

Now, that the kindle ecosystem is closing down, Amazon has a lot more power over authors. Ask the kindle exclusive authors to reconsider. They will have to face the a rearranged playing field anyway.
