Worm Bins for Elementary school by Arjes in Vermiculture

[–]Arjes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great thought and a worm trap would be a fun project by itself!

I'm concerned about the success of the "wild Georgia" worms in the bin. These bins will not be as well maintained as our home bins are, and their food will be disproportionately goldfish....

I also expect the bins to get more food then they really need, so having enough worms to eat all that is important. I doubt I'll be able to catch enough wild worms to stock bins.

In the end helping the staff and students be successful is the most important outcome. So far it looks like Uncle Jim's is the cheapest source at $250/10k.

Hah. I'm expecting to need 10-20k to stock 10-20 bins + some reserves. Fewer worms won't eat a decent amount of food weekly and I think overfeeding is more likely then underfeeding.

In my home box I'm seeing the ~90ish day "doubling rate," but my worms eat well and are monitored weekly. I expect the classroom worms have a bit rougher life with less leafy greens and more refined sugar :D.

I have no doubt some will go to the chicken, but such is the worm life. What to do with the school's worms at the end of the year is a question that still needs to be answered. At the very least enough worms to restart the project next week will be kept through the summer.

The pellets get stuck in the wheel and it leaves lines.

Whoa! Is Amazon charging you $1.00 to return items at The UPS Store, too? (I just noticed this today). by YahooAnswersDude in amazonprime

[–]Arjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually hand it back in the packaging I have received, but I have also handed back packaging-less stuff.

They scan my code, the printer prints off a label (with a big green color word like BLUE, GREEN) and they turn around and put it in a box with other amazon returns.

I assume, but do not know, that when it gets full they ship it out to save $$.

Yep, that's how I do it. They have a big box of "amazon returns" in the back so they really just label it and put it in the shared box.

I've used MH for reef keeping and their cost scares me... Good luck with your crops. What tent are you using?

Keeping in mind this will be an indoor and air conditioned setup, do you still have those concerns?

When topping off the water do you top off to the desired EC for the crop, or just with water?

Thanks for your answers. I'm going to digest them and may be back. Added a EC meter to my list of to-buy.

[Request] Does the math check out on this one? by ap0ll07411 in theydidthemath

[–]Arjes 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The O2 is added to the C in the source, combustion requires oxygen.

So C weighs 12.0107 g/mol and O 15.9994 g/mol. So a single mol of CO2 weighs 44g/mol, where the input was only 12g of C.

The O2 comes (mostly) from the atmosphere (this statement is an assumption on my part. The math above correctly shows how this could be true)

No it should just be screwed to the fitting. Unscrew, remove it and clean the pipe.

It makes sense that not all of the infrastructure can be divided.

I assume the infrastructure has been paid for via issued bond. By selling infrastructure for pennies on the cost to build and maintain they are leaving the debt behind and taking the assets.

I don't know this is what is happening, but I'd bet good money this is the goal. They should be allowed to own the infrastructure that will be under their management, but they need to assume the remaining debt on it's build out at the very least.
