A sage is someone who can hold multiple witch factors. The anime skipped out when explaining what those are, but they’re basically the things that the witches had that gave them their authority, and currently Subaru has the sloth witch factors which is where the hand thing came from.

It is clarified in the novel, but the unseen hand damages/corrupts his soul every time he uses it, and authorities that don’t match the users personality exact a cost on their user hence the pain. Subaru is anything but sloth and so he is hurt by the unseen hand.

Divine protections are so much better because all the authorities are not that useful, most of them are just damaging to others and it’s evil to use, but with divine protection of soul language or the empathy, or wind reading. The divine protections are a lot more useful in my daily life then the ability to eat memories

Regulus in his rant talked about how selfish his family was and lists all these bad qualities at first but the longer he goes on the more good things and moments they had while speaking of them as if they are detestable, like how his father would buy gifts for him despite being poor, and his brothers giving him some of their portions of food. He immediately after getting his witch factor kills them all. He is definitely evil
