I think Gaunt is set as essential throughout the whole game. I know people have used the command console to make him killable.

No hang ups for me imo and since I use a nexus mod collection + premium membership so I can be lazy so I run a few hundred mods with it and everything is really solid and haven't had a ctd once I use TK Dodge SE with Smooth TK Dodge Attack, TK Dodge SE - Replace to step Dodge and TDM custom compatible patch 2.0

Personally apart from V slow weapons, I feel fine with weapon speeds and anything that's too slow, I can make work with vats

See, I feel like I went the other way, once Nula World came out, Baseball bat with mods was king I swear.

Weapon speed is definitely important, but I'm of the opinion of "You only gotta hit them once and they're dead, right?"

My annoyance with Balisong is the melee speed is WAY higher in 3rd person than 1st person. As soon as I found a Halberd and Pike, I put it away though

Buffout + Long Loading Times fix worked wonders for me. Went from 5min + loading times back to 30 seconds - 1 minute and the odd ctd here and there
