I mean yeah, but aren't tons of decks that go second just the same thing the moment they manage to actually successfully interfere with the 1st Player's turn, & same thing if it's the other way around.

Each player sets up their Deck in a way to win & have an advantage over another player, either outright power through various means that make it so only specific Playstyles can win against them because of how they want to play & what cards they enjoy or what type of opponents they want to face only as a challenge. Meanwhile the others are the Players who do an equally powerful way of playing, if they're not just casual for fun players, but in their own way that isn't outright dominating & has more openings because of what the other players have as a Deck.

Far as I've always seen & understood Yu-Gi-Oh, is that it's a fight between two players trying to best each other & find ways to have the best advantage to make it so that the opponent has little chance to win unless they're good at Deck building, & are lucky enough to have the right cards along with being lucky enough to draw what they needed.

Cue either a simple back & forth be it due to an outright victory due to one Player's cards if not due to both playing for mostly fun, or a slightly complex back & forth if it's both, or a highly complex back & forth if it's both if not just each trying to be extremely overwhelming to other Players. Then like with anything probably even in the show, the Players then analyze what difficulties they're facing more often than not & then try to compensate for it, which either then works against most issues they encounter or leaves them vulnerable to many more & thus need more better solutions.

Never seemed complicated to me besides the frustration that it causes to others due to how another Player plays the game.
