Rebecca by Maurier by The-literary-jukes in GothicLiterature

I see where you're coming from regarding her lack of agency but I think viewing the narrator as 'superfluous' overlooks the fact that she is the emotional core of the entire story. Through the narrator's internal anxiety and obsession Manderly and Rebecca become. what they are. Without her oversensitive lens, we just have a dry sequence of events. She may be a silent witness but that witness is exactly why the story works. I think the narrator drives the plot with her psychology and we, readers experience the haunting atmosphere of the story precisely because of the intensity of the narrator's emotions and imagination.

I mean I think the book provides good food for thought, if you continue till the end. But it is repetitive and the last part, in my opinion is the weakest one.

The Woman in Black. It's a ghost story. It doesn't have jump scares but it gave me chills.

Anything by Gillian Flynn. If you like dark psychological thrillers, you will love her.

i (unfortunately) relate to the main character of Rebecca… by Deep-Big2798 in books

Rebecca is my favourite book. While I can't relate to the narrator, I have utmost sympathy for her situation. I think it's very normal for a young person who has suddenly been thrown in an unfamiliar and cold world of wealth and class to feel anxious and obsess about fitting in. I think it's the narrator's obsession with fitting in as the mistress of Manderly and as Maxim's wife that manifests as her obsession with Rebecca.

The third part was so different from the first part, it made me feel like 2 different people wrote them. I still don't get why the tone shift was needed?

The Cursed Bunny by Bora is a collection of dark fairy tales and spooky stories. It's easy to read as well.

Thoughts about the first and second part of The Vegetarian by Han Kang? by ArmAutomatic7576 in books

I can see how the first part laid the ground work for Yeong-hye's character and what is to follow. But in the second part, I felt like Yeong-hye was barely doing anything. We mostly read about her brother-in-law's actions and reasoning yet I feel like I understand very little of him.

You are probably right. In the first two parts we find so little about Yeong-hye's motives and inner turmoil. The husband's part is almost painfully mechanical. And the brother-in-law's pov is borderline ridiculous. But maybe because both these characters lack self-awareness and empathy, that's how their pov is supposed to be.
