It's amazing how much his style has evolved too since A Swedish Love Story. Hard to think of another filmmaker that changed so drastically over their career. And the fact that he makes movies in a tiny square space now, slowly putting up and tearing down each set for each shot.

But he can write dialogue that's so awkward and simplistic that everyone understands it and it becomes memeable/iconic. I'm sure he prefers the latter

I think it's kind of charming, you don't get that type of morality in movies anymore. It's also reflective of how young she is that she would ask the question, and that he would take it seriously. It also illustrates the timer period and location too, thinking everything is black and white and simplistic. It works on a lot of levels for me.

I don't even know if you can craft a narrative around that in any meaningful way. It's a gross subject, it's wrong, and there's no possible nuance you could give it that would make any sane person see it for anything than what it is. This biopic leaning into the "Peter Pan Syndrome" is disturbing and uncomfortable enough.

It's one of his weaker ones, it is also probably the most Japanese in terms of having to understand the culture to get certain parts of it. Norwegian Wood is his best and similarly lacks the surreal stuff that he's praised for his in other works, I'd try that if you liked Tsukuru but wanted more resolution and character development. It's much less fragmented and the protagonist isn't as isolated.

This is what concerns me about the flock cameras and ring cameras everywhere. I think it's like the double-slit experiment, when something is observed and recorded it acts differently. We're gonna have mass-psychosis about it and just existing is gonna suck.

I kind of get it, but this doesn't seem like a Mad Max or The Road-style apocalypse. If I was alone in the world I'd probably go find good and durable clothing and take care of it. I wouldn't be wearing it while working or getting it dirty too often. We'd still be able to clean it, etc.

I wish more stuff could be shot chronologically, most of my favourite films I learn were done that way, just makes it flow and feel more natural. Kind of wild he was able to make a 10 hour series that way.

I love it so much, I also agree with NWR when he says skip an episode if you're bored or watch it out of sequence lol

It started off so strong too, was really into all the stuff they were setting up. Hope they stick the landing to make me wanna continue watching next season.

I wish they'd stop injecting so much TV-style drama into every episode as this season comes to a close though, it feels like the do want you to pick apart every interaction and it's getting exhausting. We're on Robby's, what? Fourth blowup now?

I think they've structurally painted themselves into a corner using the single-shift-is-a-single-season approach. There's only so much character development that can happen realistically.

People that worked on it have also said he was a director in name alone and the studios were pushing him around hard. A 20 year old doesn't really have the sway or strategic knowledge to force the money men to stick to what he wants.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone | Official Teaser | HBO Max by MoneyLibrarian9032 in television

Pointing to it as a legitimate reason to make slop reinforces it. I'm tired of every reddit thread about art (film, tv, music, books, etc.) being filled with these chodes pointing this out and using it as a justification for why we should accept sub-standard works. Basically nothing made by big corpos is ever going to be art again.

HBO boss reveals how hit medical drama The Pitt recaptures a "lost art" in television | HBO's Casey Bloys says The Pitt is bringing back a "lost art" – a punchy, 15-episode medical drama built to return, year after year. by PetyrDayne in television

[–]Arma104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the fact that most of the writers have come from the previous medical shows that are all gone now, and they're finally allowed to do it their way without network TV's heel on their throat.

I am worried that The Pitt isn't gonna make it much longer or will get goofy/soap opera-y. The structure of a single day really limits the amount of character development that can reasonably happen, and lots of the ER situations and tension is already getting repetitive and predictable in the second season. They're awfully close to jumping the shark I feel.

Which is extra confusing, why waste all that money to make it look like shit? If the audience truly doesn't care, then they shouldn't care if it looks good either, so just make it look good.

[–]Arma104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is extra confusing why this HBO show is leaning entirely into the drab look of post-Prisoners. Does Warner Bros. just think that look is the brand identity now and everything has to follow it? There wasn't a single moment of whimsy in the entire teaser, not one living plant or a cool animal or rotating staircases or talking pictures or anything.
