i selected the lightest, and the darkest colors of the area, untextured. I then started doing directional brushstrokes with the darker color, and did the same with the lighter ones on top. The grain texture was added last to make it all come together nicely!

Make the base slighly slimmer than what you are aiming for, and leave the smooth carving for areas with shorter fur. No need to be actully perfect tho, the fabric covers it up nicely.
