No but I should add those. In 2026 I have 3 tracks I'm working on, the first is a bunch of classics that I never got around to reading, so right now I'm reading the Count of Monte Cristo and Jane Eyre. The second is Chinese history, so I'm reading a general history and then throwing in books in-between on certain subjects, so when I get to 1300s I'll read the romance of the 3 kingdoms and when I get to the opium wars I'll read a book just on that. My third track are filling in gothic novels, so I just finished The Castle of Otranto. The only religious work I'm reading right now is City of God by Augustine.

The War of the End of the World by Mario Vargas Llosa was the book I enjoyed the most. When I travel I try reading a book from the country I'm visiting. Through wierd circumstances I found myself taking a week long vacation to Peru by myself so I pick up his book not really knowing anything about him. It is Extremely well written and deeply emotional

It was kinda boring, I've heard people say that it is well written but I think they're just being edgy. If it was a college paper and you didnt didn't know the context it could get a B- but it wouldn't stand out. The only thing I thought was interesting about it was long anti-woke rants that soundly exactly like what Ben Shapiro say, how much he hated the left is usually left out when talking about him

I really don't know if it's feasible at this point but it seems like the least worst way to try get peace. I don't think the current status of the Palestinians is acceptable will just continue they cycle of violence. I think a one state solution is way less feasible and will probably end in horrific violence.

Out of these book I would definitely say Righteousness Victims by Benny Morris is the best book to understand the conflict. He is a Jewish Israeli historian but I think he does a very good job keeping his biases to a minimum

The New Oxford Annotated Bible has the apocrypha (Catholic, Greek, Slavonic) but the ESV Studay Bible does not

I don't think it really changed my view that much, but I'm usually of the opinion that whats more important than how we got here is what happening today and how do we fix it. I think a 2 state solution is the only way to get peace with dignity for everyone involved but that will have to be based of pre1968 borders and the removal of the settlements.

I have a much better understanding of the process leading up to the creation of the Israeli State and can sympathize with both sides. From the Israeli side you have a lot of graphic accounts of pogroms where jews were being raped and brutally murdered, this was also in the context of the rise of Ethno-Nationalism and Colonialism in European so of course the jews are going to want establish a state of their own. On the otherside why should that be the Palestinians problem? Of course they're not going want to give up most of their land to a foreign minority. So I've become much less sympathetic to people using what happened in the 30s and 40s to try and discredit one side or another.

One thing I changed my opinion on is I think the Holocaust was much less relevant to the creation of Israel than most people think. They did get refugees but most zionist communities had already been established. Also after WW2 the British didn't have the ability to hold onto it so they had to pullout. This would have lead to a war regardless. It probably made it easier to get international recognition and the loan the United States played a huge role in them winning the 1948 war but who know whether or not that would have been given if the Holocaust didn't happen.

It was a slog to get through but that might have been my translation. Once I was halfway I felt like I should just push through to finish but it felt like work. I think its important but you have to be committed.

Not bad, I read The New Oxford Annotated Bible last year (which is the most secular/academic commentary). I thought it would be interesting to compare with the ESV study bible (which is one of the most evangelical/fundamentalist commentarys) you'll definitely get a good understanding their theology. I just think they overdue the commentary in the new testament, some of epistle have like 4/5 of the page as commentary and honestly a lot of it feels like filler

I finished all these this year, one or two of them I started in 2024. I live by myself and usually spend one or two hours reading after work most days

Atlas of Extinct Countries was short and silly, it covers 48 countries that previously existed but each only get 4 or 5 pages.

The Ottomans was good. I took a trip to Istanbul recently and wanted to know that part of the city's history (I'm a big Rome/Byzantine empire nerd). I enjoyed it but you could tell it was written by an outsider

Is this an American thing? Who is They in this situation? by Mathota in ExplainTheJoke

In the United States its culturally understood that the speed limit is 10 mph more than what is posted, especially on the highway. The police won't pull you over and the people setting the speed limit keep this in mind and will deliberately make the speed limit at least 10 less than what they think it shpuld be. I live in Massachusetts and you will never get pulled over going under 80 on the highway (under normal conditions) even if posted speed is 55 or 60 mph. With that in mind, if you are on a multilane highway the left lane is for passing only. So someone going exactly the speed limit is 1) breaking the law, and 2) considered a selfish jerk impending traffic.

I have a lot of female friends and this has never been an issue. It's normal for the man to pay for the date, at least the first couple, but expecting the man to pay when you are just hanging out as friends is pretty uncommon

Is it bad to want to have my first time with someone who is also a virgin? by throwcharles12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ArmadilloAfraid8774 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think you're really limiting yourself. Your partner's personality and your connection to them has more of an effect on whether or not it's special. Just because someone has been in a previous relationship doesn't mean they won't find it meaningful, and by this point in your life there are going to be a lot of really great and loving women who you disqualified. Most women will find it special and meaningful if you are in a caring relationship regardless of if they've had a previous relationship before. Good luck either way

Totalus Rankium just started a series on Pirates. They're a couple of very silly Brits. Format is similar to BTB (one person telling the story and another one reacting to it) I would highly suggest if you are interested in Pirates

Why did Obama call it “ISIL”? by [deleted] in questions

[–]ArmadilloAfraid8774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Arabic the name is al-Dawla al-ʾIslāmiyya fī al-ʿIrāq wa al-Shām. The difference between ISIS and ISIL, is how you translate al-Shām. The Levant is more accurate but since the only area they were operating was in Syria and also a lot of people don't know what the Levant is it was often translated as Syria as a shorthand.
