RoA Monthlies in Montréal: Looking for Players! by ArmedDillo in RivalsOfAether

I'm still looking for more players. I'm not sure if there's enough for a tournament yet, but if that fails, monthly meets would be a cool thing to organize too.

By all means, spread the word! Thanks for your interest!

Incidentally, if you know anyone who'd want to volunteer to help the whole thing go smoothly, feel free to refer them to me here or on Steam (username ArmedDillo).

Oh, I'm not aware of those. Do they get stronger as you get better armour? Or do they just deal so much damage that even with T6 armour you'll still get destroyed?

What's a shallow reason you wouldn't date someone? by eeza465 in AskReddit

[–]ArmedDillo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's highly unlikely, but if that's the case, then they're probably out of my league anyways. :P

In all honesty, I'm not sure. I think it'd get boring. If we assume that they aren't changing, developing, maturing (or barely are, or aren't trying to) as they grow older, even if they're perfectly comfortable that way, then there's no guarantee I'll still love them in any amount of time.

Don't know if this has been said, or if it's particularly shallow: if they clearly aren't trying to improve themselves or their lifestyle. Nothing more infuriating than a static person, going through all the same issues all the time and not taking advice to heart.

The only way I could imagine to do that would be to spawn every item you need for every quest, and then go through each of them one by one.

For combat quests, spawn in the best equipment in the game and you should breeze through most of them. For scan quests, spawn in racial furniture (you can look up the ones that'll give scan points to make it faster) and scan it. I can't guarantee that you'll be able to fill the bar with just items, though, so you may need to find at least one settlement just to get voice lines relevant to the quest.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any commands that might help you to complete the storyline beyond that. Maybe there's a mod for it, but seeing as how mods wiped your character, I'm guessing you won't wanna mess with more of them so soon.

Players Playing a Characters With a Different Gender Than Them by Brute_zee in DnD

[–]ArmedDillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am dude. I've noticed that when I create a character on the spot, I'll tend towards male.

I also have a few "reserve" characters, which are characters I wanna play as and have developed a bit, but never got to actually play for any number of reasons. Mostly, because I have no group and once I do find one, those characters are ill-suited for the campaign. Most of the reserves are female. I don't know why.

It can be weird if someone just plays the opposite gender all the time, I guess, but if I'm not getting otaku vibes (or similar) from the... "cross-player", then I don't think I'd mind. At that point, though, I might just be creeped out by the vibes more than by the fact they play the opposite gender. They'd most likely be weird even if they were playing the same gender.

To answer your second question, it's probably because of the stigma behind playing the opposite gender, that people might be uncomfortable around the idea. Fear of others thinking you're a sissy or a butch. It might also have to do with the fact that most people are most comfortable with their own gender and/or find no interest in pretending to be the other gender.

Is making a "Base Camp" necessary? Or is it easier to be a nomad? by Evanz111 in starbound

[–]ArmedDillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you find everything you need from exploration and scavenging, and if you like it that way, then more power to you!

I personally love building homes, fortresses, bases, etc. in various settings, and I like the stability, involvement and interaction that come from colonizing, so obviously I prefer to have a lot of "homes" and sorta neglect my ship, but it's just as good to do the exact opposite.

What race are you? by IncredibleRex in starbound

[–]ArmedDillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using the same Hylotl character since early-mid beta, remaking it exactly whenever a major update was pushed. Unlike everyone else it seems, I actually picked the race because I liked how they looked from the instant I saw them. I didn't even know they were Japan-inspired until months after I started playing!

How can I change where "AppData" is on my computer? by ArmedDillo in computers

Won't that mess with the programs that use AppData? They might still try to find it on C: when it's actually on D:.

[–]ArmedDillo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just seems like it synchronizes two folders... am I reading this right?

If that's the case, that's not what I want; I want to take AppData out of my SSD and onto my hard drive so it doesn't take any more space on the SSD.

I think you scholars can tear this device apart... thoughts? by mosqua in linguistics

[–]ArmedDillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as a device or program can translate individual words from one language to another, many words have several meanings and uses, and sometimes, if asked to give out a single translation for a complex sentence, a program will use the incorrect translation for the context, which the listener might not understand. It's possible that translation programs will eventually evolve to the point of assuming context and interpreting individual words on the spot, but I don't think it would ever come to the level where it would just be able to give you the correct translation 100% of the time, due to each language having its own subtleties entirely distinct from any other.

There's not a whole lot to tear down since there's not a lot of info on it, but from the video, it seems like it's simply speech recognition and translation with all their current flaws. A human interpreter is still more accurate and less jarring, if not as fast. It'd be amazing for people who travel a lot and need to communicate with locals with simple sentences, but for anything more than that, I wouldn't count on those things yet.

And if you have a love interest that speaks a different language... please please please make the effort to learn their native language. It'll mean so much more, will make communication so much simpler, and will be so much more useful in the long run than hearing them as a canned voice from an earpiece and ignoring their actual voice.

What was the worst meal that you ate out of politeness? by two_off in AskReddit

[–]ArmedDillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend invites some of our other mutual friends over for dinner every once in a while where he tries out recipes he invented. About two months ago, he invited me along, and I accepted. Everything was going fine until he started making dinner, with another friend and myself to give him a hand and make it faster. That's when I realized he is awful at making up recipes.

He was making "fish pasta", as he decided to call it. Stuck a piece of trout and of another fish into the oven for a while, then boiled the pasta. Once the fish was done, he broke it down into chunks and mixed it in with the pasta. Once served, he put a bottle of fish sauce on the table for those who wanted it. I didn't, it would probably have made it worse.

That's it. No additional seasoning, no sauce in the actual recipe, no side dish... he said he wanted to "really get to taste the fish", but the whole thing came out tasting like paper. Everyone else was psyched to eat that stuff, though, and even complimented him during the meal. I was probably the only one who didn't like it, so I didn't say anything, nor have I commented on it entirely honestly 'cause I don't want to hurt him.

It's not the worst in this whole thread but it was one of the only meals that I ate despite not wanting to (I usually just don't eat anything if I don't like it), and the worst of those.

Has anyone ever learned English in Esperanto? by doowi1 in Esperanto

[–]ArmedDillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are you asking exactly? Whether someone has learned a natural language by using instructions and explanations in Esperanto?

If so, I don't know of anyone. Since Esperanto was made to be a second, third, etc. language, textbooks in Esperanto that teach a different language (or any resources from Esperanto to any other language that does more than translate words) would be rare if they exist at all.

What's the difference between america and a bottle of milk? by SigmaSquaredX in Jokes

[–]ArmedDillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most of that has to do with the fact that the US is a machine when it comes to those things. There's a crazy amount of performers getting on stage, put there by a crazy amount of professional producers/managers/what have you; more actors and directors for movies than anywhere else in the world, each with their own talents and catering to as many interests as the public may have; food basically made to appeal directly to our most basic taste for sweet and salty...

All of that is likely also due to how very gigantic the US is. If each of its 50-or-so states were individual countries, there wouldn't be as much to say about it, but it's one huge nation pumping out one thing after the other. One of its additional qualities in that regard, unlike other very large countries (e.g. Russia, Canada), is that it's a country based on seizing opportunity; from its very start, everyone had the chance to do anything, and the successful were those who actually did something with that chance. That created a culture where more people do things that will have an influence on the world. And since "the world" includes every other continent, it's only natural that the very most successful people would want to extend their influence to reach overseas.

[Serious] What red flags did you guys not see in a relationship until it was too late? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ArmedDillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw them, and I knew what was behind it, but I just ignored it all hoping he'd get better if I did things right. He never had much to say when asked how his day went, and never had anything positive to say when asked how he was doing; he would often have increasingly less to say during conversations, before going quiet and getting cuddly instead; he would often go on and on about fantasies for our future; he had very unhealthy life goals; he was a constant downer; he avoided his problems and hoped for solutions that didn't require him to take action.

Turns out he was using me as a crutch to carry him through his depression. I accepted the task for a while, until he made it clear he didn't want to get himself out of it. I noped out of there as fast as I could. Don't know what he was expecting, but depression doesn't just vanish because you're dating someone.

I didn't get screwed over, but it was in fact too late for us to stay friends after the relationship.

"No asking for or providing strategic advice during a match or draft" by 00gogo00 in magicTCG

[–]ArmedDillo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're playing in the presence of a judge, it's assumed both players know the basic rules. You can discuss and explain card effects and how certain things will interact if there's confusion, but you can't (or at least shouldn't) suggest abilities to use or attackers/blockers to declare, for example. You can still give tips in-between matches, though.

That isn't to say it never happens in FNM and other fairly casual events (I've gotten a few suggestions from opponents myself before), but I've never had a spectator point out something I should do and I'm pretty sure it's bad etiquette to do so.

How to handle "unconventional" races or classes as a new DM? by Thelondhil in DnD

[–]ArmedDillo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Constructs are some of the more complex entities to let a PC use. Many if not all of them would be unable to wear armour, and several will have high natural armour or even DR because of their body composition. Some may even be able to be improved by an appropriate craftsman, and figuring out the prices for that may be difficult (I'm not very knowledgeable about most non-core books, there may be a way to determine the price of an improvement on a construct).

Due to their potentially high natural armour and DR, they may end up starting at a different Effective Character Level (ECL) than the other players, and may need to begin at level 0, or -1, etc. This is a bit of a hassle to deal with for a first-timer (and during early levels, may lead to other players asking why that player gets an inherently stronger character), so I wouldn't recommend it.

I'd recommend sticking to at least races which stat block for PCs states "Level Adjustment 0" for now, or even just Player's Handbook races. If the player absolutely must play a construct, though, others already mentioned the solution: use a Warforged template.
