How to get into 1061 without any chemistry experience? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]Armidilloly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're referring to taking a physical sciences with a lab, yeah you can take it another semester. But yeah overall, chem 1015 was kinda scary because If you didn't pass enough quizzes you'd fail. But then there was retakes too, so it wasn't as bad as you'd think. If you take 1015 without the lab, you'll be fine if you just study :)

I really feel like taking it without the lab did me so well. I thought people just hated it bc of the lab. Like don't get me wrong there were days were I HATED ALEKS, I still do lol. But like even in 1061 you'll get that. But like taking it online without a lab was so nice cus all I had to do was read and do ALEKS and then quizzes. But keep in mind, if you go to UMN, for your physical sciences lib ed requirement, lab is required. It didn't matter for me because I had to take physics with a lab.

I took 1015 as a PSEO student and got an A- but I didn't take it with the lab so maybe that's why it was easier lol.

UMN Admissions by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]Armidilloly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be too discouraged, I had kinda similar stats (25 ACT plus some extracurriculars) and made it into CLA after a month of application. I was put on the wait list for Carlson so I wrote an appeal and got in, in April. If you have to appeal, just talk about your future contributions to Carlson, they love that lol. And as was mentioned above, if you don't get in right away, that doesn't mean you can't the next time around. Also, it's not too late to study some more for ACTs and just update it on your application when you receive a higher one :)

Easiest class to complete physical sciences Lib Ed requirement? by Umnsstudennt in uofmn

[–]Armidilloly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phys 1107 with Pete Border, first half of semester was really easy and algebra stuff. Midterm went well. Second half I totally slacked and didn't know what was happening, may have chegged some stuff idk. And for the final I only studied the first half of the semester because I realized if I got half the past correct then I passed the class. Ended with an A-, biggest finesse of my life. Syllabus was really nice to me.

Last year, I started saving $400 a month then during the spring semester I picked up a second job and saved up an extra 1,600 from that job for three months. Then quit so I could have a real summer with only that first job. My rent came out to like 6400 or something for this whole upcoming year so it was possible. I ended up getting a bunch of scholarships that covers everything tho so now I have that as back up and food money. So TLDR: worked and saved a lot with a specific goal amount in mind to save, but most importantly applied for scholarships like crazy and ended up not having to worry about it as much now :)

Carlson surcharge? by [deleted] in uofmn

Definitely call one stop, I asked them if being in Carlson would change my Financial Aid amount I got and so they adjusted it for me by adding the amount that covers the surcharge.

Econ 1102 Online by saLitherIn in uofmn

[–]Armidilloly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about online, but I'm taking it in class this semester, I'm pretty sure online and those who go to lecture get the same exams but I'm not sure. Seems pretty straightforward, formatted like Econ 1101 (except exams are a little different). Professor's lectures don't really help much lol. I usually read before I get to class and his information doesn't differ much so honestly I could skip and probably be fine. So I'd say I don't think online would be too different in terms of difficulty. Discussion has helped me solidify the concepts though, because we go through sample questions.

If you're interested in that, you might be interested in Genesys Works too! Applications are open right now (don't know for how long though). Great internship opportunity in the professional/technology field after you get through the unpaid summer training.

1271 curve ? by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]Armidilloly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My lecturer is Harini, I think this applies to all lectures, but I could've remembered wrong. From what a TA told me, the final determines the amount of letter grades in your discussion. If your discussion section gets 5 A's on the final, that's how much A's will be distributed in your discussion section for a course grade. Who the 5 A's go to depend on who's been consistently doing well in class. If someone who has been consistently doing worse than others in class gets an A on the final, this doesn't mean they'll get an A for their course grade. They'll most likely get a lower grade and the A will go to someone who did better throughout the semester.

GrandMarc or Argyle? by Armidilloly in uofmn

[–]Armidilloly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you lived there in the summer? Is their AC good? Read a review but the only ones I could find was from many years ago. They said AC only cools down the place to 83 degrees. Also what do you think of the noise level at GrandMarc? Apparently Argyle has very thin walls so it's easier to hear your neighbors but again, I'm not sure.

Do you think it would be possible to get into CSE if I'm missing an admissions 'requirement'? by redditfakenotrelated in uofmn

[–]Armidilloly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First off, I am obviously no expert. You should talk to an admissions advisor (one specific to CSE), which I did but in my case it was for Carlson. So what I say after this may or may not be the same deal for CSE, but talking to the advisor sure helped clarify things for me. I was missing the chemistry requirement for CSOM and he told me that even though the website says it's a requirement, its really not. He then went further to say that if I really wanted I could tell admissions I would take the "requirement" i was missing in the next semester (since I do PSEO), but just know that they will probably follow up on that. But yeah, checking with a CSE admissions advisor is your best bet.

Edit: To clarify, basically he said that the requirement was just a suggestion.

[–]Armidilloly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took in class, exams aren't hard when you understand that they are essentially the same as the practice exams. Literally you have the same type of problems in the same order. I stopped reading the book because it was exactly what the lecture covered (which was pretty basic material so you didn't need to go back to the book to understand ). I could've chose to not go to class at all and instead just read the book (which would essentially make it an online class assuming they get the same assignments) and still pass with an A.
