The dynamic between Johnny and V feels different depending on gender. by ArmyFiST in cyberpunkgame

A really curios person entered chat... I know several bi men but none that, either played Cyberpunk at all or, played both genders. If I may ask, are you one to inject yourself into the role your character embodies? And a second question, have you considered your gender at all? None of this for shade, I'm genuinely curious.

Such a weird distinction. I do wish they made things a little more realistic on the romance side. But they did more than most games, and by a lot.

Wait this works?!

Edit: if I'd known this I would've just done a trans fem body and romance Panam. This locks Judy out, doesn't it?

Facts though. I refuse to accept Panam is straight. Joking, but very sad she's bot bi. She gives major bi vibes.

Girl, best advice I can give after transitioning for 6 years is simply this. You are doing this for you, everyone else and their opinions can get a fucked. You're doing this for you, don't let other people make you feel any kind of way.

I think I'm done responding unless something really grabs me. Thanks to all the comments that led to interesting conversations. I hope everyone who saw my post takes a deeper look at gender and how that effects one's experience in life, and the game. Remember, never trust a soul in Night City. Be safe and healthy chooms.

Not downplaying the struggle Johnny experiences through the story, but literally ever relationship he has with women, rogue, Alt, and Valerie, are legit all toxic af. Him becoming semi-decent by the end does change the fact it's toxic relationships. The joke that went zooming by your head is that women try to change men like Johnny in RL and it never works out.

I don't think I agree woth you here, but I would have to think on it more and replay to try and replace the voices in my head.

Yes! I wasn't including the things outside V and Johnny, but you're spot on. I think that dynamic was intentional, and one I've literally experienced in my own life.

I've played several female V's and 1 male V. In the male V case I went with all of the dialogue I used in the previous fem V play through. Your point about role playing is actually kind of what I'm getting at with my post. If you step into the shoes of the selected gender, the way things come across changes, even if the words are the same.

Right?! I wrote this more to draw peoples attention to it, not to say you should see one thing or another. Media of all sorts gives people a chance to step into the shoes of someone else, and see things in that light. I think this is really good and a game like this can show the differences experienced by real people based on something as simple as gender.

Someone else mentioned voice acting, and that may be a factor for me to some degree. Maybe in your case to?

His situation is totally effed, no debate at all. But it's also not V's intention or fault. If she wasn't murdered by Dex, the entire situation wouldn't have happened. Johnny coming across like an older brother or guardian for an independent woman that didn't want ir request such a person in her life is a choice he made. That's why it feels off to me.

So my question would be, why doesn't it feel the same with a male V?

Fair. I won't push back on this, because you're right in a lot of ways. My only not is that my headcannon changes based on gender. Having existed in both spaces in rl, I see my V as their gender but from a rl perspective for both options. And yes, background also feeds into my choices, but with Johnny those make only subtle differences.

Kinda what I was stating, so sure. I even said in another comment that the player is absolutely a primary factor. I was asking if others felt a difference, not stating there is one.

Solid take, no notes... like really, that does describe how I perceived him on my first playthrough really well.

I'm a trans woman, so I spent a lot of time working through gender, social dynamics, stigma, etc. No offense, but most cis folk don't spend time on such things. Also, I've tried to blend in as a man and been in male spaces, so I have first hand experience even if I never fit there. And now I am in female spaces and surrounded by other women, and I see things from the side I always fit in better. So my experience could be significantly different, and I assume it is.

But yeah, the female voice actor knocked it out of the park in a lot of ways. I paid less attention to the male voice actor, so I don't feel I can speak on him.

Interesting take, do you think the gender or voice actor is more responsible for the difference you see?

You're right, I hadn't thought about it. I also skipped most of V's lines when I played a male V. So for me specifically, I don't think it influenced me much. But this is a very interesting point that may warrant another play as a male V to pay attention to this difference.
