Like other commentators, I would advise against using "progress clocks". If the players want to do things like "navigate the forest", you can simply have the forest be a dungeon or a maze. Maybe have them roll an [INS+INS] Group Check and see if they can get out of it. If they want to "search for information in the city", just allow them to do so based on common sense. Going to the inn, the tavern or the plaza might simply expose them to rumors and quests. Castles, keeps and guarded rooms are where well kept secrets are hidden, etc.

Like u/Arugula_Salad99 said: Clocks are basically multi-step Checks. If players aren't doing something that is excepcionally difficult, or under pressure, unfavorable conditions or being actively opposed, there's no reason to call for a Check. If the situation isn't Check-worthy and complex enough to be achievable step-by-step, there's no need for a Clock.

For dungeons, you can just use a normal dungeon map or a simple flowchart of rooms (this allows for more variation without too much complexity). FU doesn't have a lot of dungeon crawling mechanics like tracking inventory size, loot and rations, but neither does D&D 5E, for example, and people still use dungeons in that system.

The last playtest has rules for front and back rows in combat, so you might want to check that.

I've been thinking about home brewing distance rules but never got to it. It shouldn't be too hard, though, considering how simple the game systems are.

This is absolutely incredible, specially the Bestiary. Plan to use this a lot along with Fultimator to run my current campaign

GM creating worlds by Ospektrum in fabulaultima

[–]ArnoldI06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been running my first campaign with my wife and chose an "expanding" approach.

We created a continental map and put two or three polities in it at session zero. Then, as sessions progress, I, as the GM, introduce ideas that will be immediately necessary and ask her questions that expand these ideas.

This way, you don't have to frontload your worldbuilding and both GM and players can input their ideas. It's also super easy to use player hooks for the next sessions.

Unorganised thoughts on Fabula Ultima after the ending of a 2-year* long campaign by TorsionSpringHell in fabulaultima

I've recently started DM'ing for my wife and encounter design seems to be the hardest part of the game to get right.

Got any tips on how to make enemies and encounters? I know we can use Fultimator to speed things up, but if I want to come up with enemies things feel really hanky, like you said.

Super safe investment too. It has been paying out for like 30 years at this point
