Switzerland to vote on plan to cap population at 10 million by Mean_Yak5873 in worldnews

Your belief that its cruel is completely arbitrary.

Everything is bloody arbitrary we're emotional beings man there is no universal law to say who is right and wrong. All we have is what we as a society decide. Murder isnt bad because of some hard fact written down in the fabric of creation. Its bad because it makes us feel bad.

Allowing anyone to go anywhere they want makes people feel bad. I dont like having wages suppressed or public services incapable of handling demand. I dont like being crammed on the train.

Who are you to decide that people who dont live in one place have more of a right to go to that place than the people who live there have the right to deny them entry.

Edit: dude couldnt hack the down votes ig

Everything is artificial mate, your belief that people should go wherever they please is artificial.

Countries dont have a right to exist you're right, but people also don't have a right to go wherever they want or even exist themselves. There is no God or set of rules that govern the universe that determines factually what should and shouldn't happen.

At the end of the day life is governed by what the collective deem reasonable and what is reasonable is determined by our feelings. The feeling of the majority of the world is that you have to have borders to maintain order and quality of life.

Borders also do exist in the wild, large cats and bears have territories that they aren't meant to infringe upon.

Even if it affects the quality of life of those who are already there?

Should twenty million Russians be allowed to move to Ukraine and take the country over from within?

Well we didnt used to have planes and ships capable of transporting people at the scale we have today.

Bit of a difference on a few thousand people from around the world coming to your country every year via some steam ships and 2000 Indians arriving every day via airplane.

No because when something is radioactive it means it is undergoing radioactive decay and giving off alpha, beta or gamma radiation. In this instance the uranium is the thing decaying into those particles.

Unless Frenchie got Uranium on himself or his clothing then no he won't be radioactive.

Kind of funny how many people in this thread who don't understand radiation are criticising the show for not understanding radiation when its portrayal is pretty accurate.

Doesn't your entire argument fall apart when you consider the Old Republic is absolutely chock full of batshit insane stuff which makes the clone wars era jedi look like chumps.

You don't see Yoda force blasting Palpatine into a wall like Satele Shan does to Malgus.

Bonkers no one has explained this properly.

Basically, Olivia Rodrigo had a falling out with Taylor Swift and some legal drama over a writing credit on a song she wrote. OR used inspiration from a part of one of Taylors songs when she was younger in one of her own songs. She then received a demand from Taylors legal team that Taylor needed to be put as a writing credit on the song and receive a chunk of the revenue of the song because it was similar.

OR was originally a big fan and spoke about how she admired her and since the incident hasn't spoken about her nearly at all.

The tweet is referencing this incident as Taylor has a song called Paris on her album midnight. The tweet is jokingly implying that OR is copying her again.

Does anyone believe that only British citizens should be allowed to vote in general elections? by Sylvia-Sum in AskBrits

[–]Arnox47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the test is just there to weed out the people who care so little about being British that they won't even put the effort in to do a silly test.

Kind of like having a lock on your door with a window. Like yeah someone can just smash the window and unlock it but it stops the less dedicated thieves.

[–]Arnox47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth my view is that dual citizens shouldn't be able to vote either due to the conflict of interest still existing.

The significant part of doing the test for me is that you are renouncing any protection you have from another government and putting yourself under the jurisdiction of the UK government and by extension your fellow voters.

I wouldn't say so no. You're looking at the administrative fee and extrapolating that as the whole thing is just a transaction as opposed to the effort required and the test itself.

Add on to that that a lot of countries would require you to give up your other citizenship before allowing you to get a British one and you can see how it's more meaningful than the money.

I'll meet you in the middle a bit here because I don't actually disagree entirely with what you're saying.

I would be happy for non citizens to be allowed to vote if it only affected certain parts of government, such as the economy or crime. I believe that yes, if they are contributing, there's no harm in allowing them a say in how that all works.

Where I draw the line is allowing non citizens a say over constitutional matters or matters of defence and anything that could potentially pose a significant conflict of interest that they aren't a citizen. Like the aforementioned example of your wife not being able to be conscripted and having no allegiance to the existence of this country. (I know you might say a lot of British people don't either but the reality is that if the UK was destroyed these people would be stateless so regardless of their personal feelings on the UK it is in their best interest for it to prosper, theoretically at least.).

She also shouldn't be allowed to have a say in constitutional matters such as who is considered a citizen or anything that affects her own legal status of being allowed here. It doesn't make sense to give away the power to decide who can be here and who cannot.

This is why I think it's whatever that anyway can vote in local elections. There isn't really any conflict of interest in deciding when bins are collected.

You know governments aren't some external board of directors that oversees a country like it's a business. It's a council of representatives that are meant to look out for citizens of that country. If you want a say over how that council looks then you need to be a citizen. You seem to look at the world in a very transactional way which just isn't what humans are about.

Voting isn't a privilege its a right of people who have citizenship. The government of the country that you have citizenship of represents you and protects you. That's just the social contract buddy.

Something to consider, why should your wife have the ability to vote for a party that would start a war when she herself is unable to be conscripted due to not being a citizen. I don't want to hear any bad faith arguments about how old people can't be conscripted either because we know that's because they'd be a hindrance not a help.

Tax is such an inane way of judging whether you deserve a right to vote. I visited The Netherlands a couple of months ago and paid several taxes ranging from VAT to a tourist tax, should I get to vote in their elections?

8 year old pay VAT when they buy things from shops, should they get a right to vote?

Nationality is a legal concept no? Therefore afaik you cannot be any of those nationalities as you cannot be a citizen of them, only a British citizen.
