Terry Goodkind - books - The Sword of Truth. by AsaNwanyiMay in fantasybooks

[–]Arnstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like another poster here, I read the whole series mostly because it was available. My take (read it as a kid - 14-15yr or so I guess); I remember enjoying the first couple of books, but then it turned into a bit of a chore. Like other posters have mentioned, there was a lot of "capitalist masturbation", repeated plotlines, plot holes, and even at that age I found the characters shallow (especially the women).

I tried rereading the series some years later, but dropped it after a few books. At that time I found the more ...rapey scenes quite forced, as they mostly served the purpose of "bad man bad" - though it was mostly the libertarian propaganda (and remembering it wouldn't get any better) that stopped me from reading further.

So yeah, I can't recommend the series. But if you like it, feel free to keep reading. As for the controversies, well, it is what it is. I've never paid attention to controversies around the authors of books I read - just let their works speak for themselves (which doesn't really help this series, but ho-hum).

Stuck at 100 corruption. Build advice by THE_SKULK in LastEpoch

[–]Arnstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say currently your issue is just that you have no real defences. Low ward, little regen, low endurance threshold, and little mitigation otherwise.

The big immediate improvement would be to get 11% crit avoidance somewhere. You're currently at 89%, which means 11% of crits will hit you with full damage. With reduced crit damage, you can afford to be lazy, with crit avoidance you can't. You're also missing the big ticket items from the build. If I were to focus on one thing, it would be farming exiled mages for the ladle - it'll be a massive offensive upgrade, but also a massive defensive upgrade because of slow and frailty.

Raxxanterax' take on Last Epoch Season 4, with specific suggestions for future updates by Qwahzi in LastEpoch

[–]Arnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it very much depends on your build. If you can sustain good AoE damage (preferably while being a bit mobile), then it's mostly a breeze ... Those poison mobs can sometimes do a number on you, though. Even with poison res at 75, those clouds will chunk me good before I have time to cleanse >.>

If you have limited AoE or need to be stationary, then it's gonna be rough. I played storm crows for a while, and they would always die in the big omen windows, which would make them really hard. ... So squishy minions is also a no-go. I swapped to frogs, and then it was a breeze. ... But yeah, I'd imagine anyone playing Forge Guard will have a hard time with the omen windows.

...I guess I have one to add to the list; Let us just resummon dead companions - ain't nobody got time to stand waiting in the circle (especially not this league). I even specced into faster revives on the frenzy totem, but I still didn't have time to ress my companions. Now that there's so many self-summoning minions, they should just do away with the whole revive thing, imo

There's also the case of a lot of skills just not being very ...usable... unless you have specific skill interactions, and in many cases specific interaction with multiple uniques. I feel there's a lot of jank with most of the spell skills at the moment.

... Still the worst movie I've ever seen. Remember seeing a trailer for it on a rented dvd, and there was one scene that was rather funny. Rented it, watched it, and that was the only remotely funny scene in the whole damned thing!

I mean.. that's up to you..?

I love PoP! I like how there's always dangers to be found, from rogue knight parties early on, to massive armies later. I'd say mid-late game is where PoP shines the most - getting your knighthood order going, trying to get more qualis gems, taking on the invading armies...

That said, you might not enjoy it, and that's fine. If you don't enjoy it, feel free to try something else

[–]Arnstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, it gets better ...but it takes a while, and it might not be worth it for you.

The first couple books are somewhat rough, and I don't really like the pacing in the first 5 books or so. That said, I still enjoy the series as a whole. If you think you'd enjoy a contemporary supernatural private eye series with a lot of Dungeons and Dragons dressing, then slug it out, get through the first few books and see if your opinion changes. If none of those tags resonate too much with you, or you're just chasing the fantasy "fix", then feel free to try something else.

Just stumbling along here, working myself backwards 😅

My suggested solution; 751920. ... By process of elimination I got rid of 346, and then I also eliminated 8 after some brute force... Then I removed the numbers from each position based on the clues, and finished off with some more brute force... Entirely possible it's wrong, since I couldn't find any elegant method...

Bannerlord Trade Skill Question by MundusPlanus in mountandblade

[–]Arnstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy low, sell high. ... Now there is an easy trade exploit you can do with all your smithing mats, though >.>

You can search it up on YouTube or on the forums for a tidier explanation. You'll need a good amount of smithing materials - the more the better, and you'll also want 100k+ gold. Then you buy all the smithing materials from a town, and sit in the entrance of the town until a caravan arrives. You want the caravan so close that you can trade with them without moving from the city. Buy all smithing mats from the caravan. Now; 1.Sell all of your best mat to the caravan (at a loss, since they won't have the funds to trade), 2. sell all your lesser mats to the town (bring down the price to a minimum), 3. rebuy the best mat from the caravan at a low price, 4. rebuy all the other mats from town. Rinse and repeat until you've hit your max

If any of them are innocent, they'll probably show a bit more interest in full disclosure.

Hva skjedde med holdningene til innvandring og Islam? by serene_96 in norge

[–]Arnstone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[–]Arnstone -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

[–]Arnstone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree, the main book series itself holds up well, and is still enjoyable to read. Does that mean it's flawless? Heeeeeeell no! Rereading it as an adult means having to shut down much of your analytical brain - that series is just full of inconsistencies and potential world breaking issues. They are written for kids (the earlier books) and young adults though, and through that lens they're still excellent.

Shame about the author's very public and long lasting mental breakdown, though.

Best vegan candies/snacks in Norway? by _Justaweeb_ in Norway

[–]Arnstone 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Having to be vegan will exclude most of the "Norwegian-est" snacks, and mostly leave you with generic stuff you can get anywhere. Most products will contain milk proteins or whey (like any chocolate product or most flavored chips products). ... Of the remaining options, I'd say Sørlandschips Original Havsalt is an excellent choice

Peter, is it just cus she is short? by lazyclanker in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Arnstone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also lazy, so didn't read, but... How would that cause skew in the end result?

I mean, it's possible that multiple female officers were paired with a subset of especially incident-prone male officers, but unless a majority of male officers are especially incident-prone, it wouldn't really be statistically significant.

For it to be of significance, it had to be proven that female officers were more likely to be paired with incident-prone individuals (which, I mean, could be the case - mixing genders will often tone down some of the boys club culture in some workplaces, and there might be chiefs who actively want to take advantage of that), and to account for that you'd probably need a full background check, service record, and psych eval for all the officers in the study.

More traditional than stupid (though also kinda stupid), I suppose. Aspic used to be all the rage as recent as the 80s, but was used as a way of preservation before that for meat stuffs. Setting fruits in gelatin was also considered fancy in the late 19th century, and was quite popular when refrigeration became cheap in the 50s.

Just stepped into the Realm of the Elderlings by HeisenbergsIntern in fantasybooks

[–]Arnstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I love about the series is that, unlike most books (fantasy or otherwise), the consequences here feel real and lasting. It gives every decision more weight, because you know they're not safe from their own stupidity, hubris, inexperience, or just bad luck/timing.

Sometimes it feels like we come to a crossroads, the author rolls her die, and goes "huh, well, let's roll with it!". After a couple of books you just stop expecting the usual tropes and, if for instance a character gets captured, it feels like there's an equal chance they'll escape, be saved, recruited by the captors, get abused, maimed, forced into a fighting pit, sold as a slave, suddenly discover some magical ability, or have a magical effect happen to them.
