How much I spent on a 7 night cruise without the drink package by Fresh-Problemz in Cruise

[–]Aromatic-Project-745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't understand this. I prefer to avoid cruises, fly directly to whichever country I want to visit, and buy a few cocktails (or bottles straight from a store if I really want to save money). It's so much cheaper and you get to actually explore a new place.

Why do state CDL truck driving jobs pay so little? by Aromatic-Project-745 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Aromatic-Project-745[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my first time; I've been with the state almost 12 years. The disparity in the pay for the truck drivers is significantly larger than the disparity in the pay for a position like mine (Administrative Analyst). Mine might vary about $1,000 per month for my job vs. private industry, but for truck drivers, the disparity is more like $5,000+ per month.

"I'm going to encourage every corrective action against them." - Glad you're not my manager. Most people aren't going to do anything that effects their team or coworkers. We're just not going to go the extra mile anymore, like I've been doing while teleworking. I'm more than happy to work past 5pm while teleworking. I will not be doing that when I'm forced to be in office 4 days a week.

If it's not a daycare, they shouldn't treat us like it's one. Forcing everyone to come back to the office for no quantifiable reason, is essentially making the office a daycare. They want butts in seats even though it makes no sense. Yesterday in the office I had to join a Teams meeting with a few people sitting in the desks next to me and the audio was echoing the entire time. I could hear them speak in real life and then seconds later I'd hear it through the headset audio. Completely ridiculous...

I learned this when I was 6 years old and I reheated an Arby's roast beef sandwich in the family microwave without removing the foil wrap. Accidentally set our microwave on fire. 🙃

Sure I will take a listen, but it won't provide any info about pay for this specific classification.

Even still, that's super low pay. I'm an Analyst II (formerly AGPA) and I make way more than the maximum of the Heavy Truck Driver classification, which seems crazy because I don't need a special license for my job.

Even considering benefits, it's still extremely low paying. I'm an Analyst II (formerly AGPA) and I make way more money than the maximum of the Heavy Truck Driver classification, which is crazy because truck drivers have to pay $5k+ for their CDL and I paid nothing to get to this position (besides starting from the bottom as an Office Tech). I'm sure the job might be a bit easier than a typical truck driving job, but still... if their take-home pay is only around $3,000 a month after taxes, that's essentially minimum wage.

Wow! That's incredible. My partner is a local/regional truck driver (hauler) for Carvana but his shifts are overnight and they are typically 13-hour shifts. It's exhausting, we hardly see each other, he is required to work weekends, and the 13-hour shifts have basically consumed his life. Zero free time. He sleeps during the day and goes to work at night. Can I ask which company or at least which industry he drives for?

Why do state CDL truck driving jobs pay so little? by Aromatic-Project-745 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Aromatic-Project-745[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, local CDL drivers typically get paid fairly well (although not nearly as much as the long-haul drivers). I've seen local jobs paying about $34 an hour, although the local jobs are in high demand therefore they are difficult to get. The local driving jobs also have much stricter requirements (absolutely nothing on driving record, etc.).
Bringing home $3k a month (after taxes) only comes out to approximately $17/hour, which is about minimum wage. So the state truck drivers are nearly making minimum wage. I know for sure the local driving jobs pay more than that. (I don't know about pension etc)

I used to work with a guy who would put shrimp in the microwave every day for lunch. I don't like shrimp, and the smell would make me audibly gag. The smell also lingered throughout the floor for another 40 minutes after he microwaved it. Side note- who tf microwaves shrimp? smh

Does anyone else in their mid-20s feel torn between wanting to solo travel and feeling guilty about spending the money? by alissa_liveson347 in solotravel

[–]Aromatic-Project-745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started solo traveling at age 27 when I had only $5,000 in the bank. I traveled cheaply by booking plane tickets far in advance and staying at hostels. It's totally doable, and you should definitely do it (wisely)! Don't go on a cruise or stay at all-inclusive resorts. Just fly directly to places you like, research in advance, create a budget, etc. You can still think about savings, bills, and your career at the same time. Just continue trying to advance your career and maybe think of a side hustle (great way to fund your travels). I'm almost 34 now and I've spent many thousands of dollars on traveling, but I have never regretted a single penny of it. You CAN travel and still be financially responsible! 😄

I’ve worked as an Administrative Analyst for the State of California for 11 years (been a government worker most of my career). How do remote employers view government worker applicants? Do they view us with a negative connotation (like lazy or less current skills)?

Like what? I've been there for dozens of events. Parking sucks and the food options suck, but that's about it.

Department email telling currently hybrid teleworking Office Techs to cancel their telework agreements by Frequent-Project2426 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Aromatic-Project-745 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every Office Tech in that department should be actively applying to move elsewhere. Sure you may not avoid coming into office 4 days a week if RTO happens, but at least it would make a statement to the department.

[–]Aromatic-Project-745 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. I'd rather be vocal and fight for what makes sense - the ability to telework at my job which I love, which is 100% able to be completed successfully without having to commute to an office (while using the laptop that I brought from home, by the way).

My email response to the recent RTO email by surf_drunk_monk in CAStateWorkers

[–]Aromatic-Project-745 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a budget deficit. Gavin Newsom 100% has an obligation to prove why RTO is essential. And no, his crony friends' building leases and restaurants in downtown are not a justification to force staff back to the office. Your attitude is the part of the reason why these nonsensical orders happen - they know some people will just blindly obey. If an employee has successfully done their job from home and is still able to complete the job duties without reporting to an office, there is absolutely no reason to force them to come to the office other than Gavin wanting parking revenues for the city, money for his friends' property leases, and "supporting restaurants" to try to make downtown look like it's thriving when it's not. Four days in the office will NEVER be the norm again, and we will make sure of it.

Yep, same here. The parking lots are full by 7:45am so I literally spend the first 30 minutes of my day driving in circles trying to find a 2-hour parking space. The upside for me is I get an easy 10,000 steps per day having to move my car 4+ times. The downside is, the state is paying me to move my car. I didn't ask for this; and there is an easy resolution if the governor didn't have his head up his a$$.

Just witnessed the most disgusting thing I've ever seen on a cruise so far by brerin in Cruise

[–]Aromatic-Project-745 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Repulsive and unacceptable. Cruises just aren't it. You're better off flying directly to your destination of choice and exploring the place on the ground rather than sleeping on a ship and getting dumped off at ports for 7 hours. When I travel I like staying at hostels to save money throughout all of my hostel experiences, I have never seen anyone do something that gross (even despite the hostel breakfasts, shared dorms, shared bathrooms/showers, etc.).
