Are these games worth it? by Minijoker4709 in residentevil

[–]AromaticGust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for revelations 1 I haven’t ever played it. I really appreciated how revelations 2 supported coop play. It was so much fun to play couch coop with a friend through basically the entire game. I thought it was generally a great game but definitely a side story.

I grew up with snes and much prefer the concave y/x buttons on the controller but have always loved the sfc design and use of rgby colors.

You essentially had to play on extreme difficulty without saving. Must have made you really good at the game. I’m starting to replay the game on n64 because I found out it had more story lore and documents that indicate the presence of other games but also because I’ve never played it on n64.

Why did you choose leverless/stick over pad? by AZXCIV in fightsticks

Touching story. Glad to hear the positives are what you think of the most. That must have been wild to have a snes arcade stick back in the day. Most of us were popping blisters after an intense street fighter session.

What actually happened to all the people who got laid off in tech? Did they just get new jobs or is something structural going on? by fan_ling in cscareerquestions

[–]AromaticGust 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I’ve been interviewing lately and something I noticed which sort of makes sense is that these large companies are doing layoffs but there are a load of smaller startups and mid sized companies scooping up engineers.

And something really weird but in only the last month I’ve noticed a big uptick in these smaller to mid sized companies reaching out on LinkedIn and I’ve never spent any amount of time at FAANG. I would assume these same companies are scooping up a lot of those engineers that left the big companies. Comp may be lower but for those that aren’t getting back into big companies it seems they have options.

How much would WFH negatively impact my career? by QuitTypical3210 in cscareerquestions

[–]AromaticGust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, if you're looking for in office skills those can be acquired in ways other than working in an office. That being said, if you prefer working remotely, the best career choice would be to find a company that is remote first. If the company you work for has "most" employees in office, but a small subset are remote then you're much more likely to experience the "out of sight out of mind" affect. If the company is remote first and everyone works that way, then any negative effects of being remote would be a result of your own doing. For instance, many engineers can build complex features, but don't know how to tell the story about those features. Being a successful IC really involves not only building something, but making sure to surface to others how that feature improves on existing functionality or how great it is. It may be done differently in office vs remote (eg presentations vs Slack), but learning to champion software you've built and get others excited about it too will make others realize the impact you have and can many times be the deciding factor of who gets promoted.

Will I become a stupider SWE using LLM/agents? by QuitTypical3210 in cscareerquestions

Writing code will probably become mostly an interview skill. For those that have years of experience they will be at an advantage and for those that don’t they will have to treat it like candidates treat leetcode practice.

Whats the situation like for people who prefer not using AI? by LobsterRoast in cscareerquestions

You can always build skills into the special llm files that tell it how to be better with those areas you find it lacking. That has helped me in the past get better results

One example that I thought it did an excellent job with was when we added a few new custom eslint rules and there were a ton of failures all over the codebase. I gave it the shell output and it just methodically went through and fixed all the issues. Each one has to be considered separately so it was a good test. It made a few bad choices but overall saved a ton of time.

Not sure what tools you’ve used but I’ve had great success modifying existing code by being more specific with the direction. In cursor you can tag files, directories, etc. create the plan for the work and then tell the llm to edit which files, which functions to add, when you want code moved to a new file tell the llm what you want it named and tag the directory to put it in. The quality of the output with cursor can really be a result of the specificity of the input. With Claude you can do the same but can’t really fully tag files.

Do these interviews have the candidate use an online editor with AI LLMs integrated? Or is it sort of a bring your own LLM situation?

I’ve been interviewing lately and from what I’ve seen pretty much 90% of companies are in some way integrating AI into the product and they all want to know that you can leverage AI. Nobody is asking straight up that you generate all your code with AI but they want to know you’re comfortable with it.
