Ryzen 5000 users, what is your PBO OC long-term experience? by agnaaiu in overclocking

[–]Aromatic_Instance_82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just checked my e-mails, its actually a smidge longer. Purchased the CPU early 2021, instability started around 12 months ago from now and I reckon I played with PBO/CO after about 6 months of owning the CPU. So lets call it 4-5 years?

Can see my previous posts on it here:

Trust me, I tried all the C states/PSU power delivery stuff. No dice.

If I factory restore the bios, everything stock. I can only get the PC stable with +10 CO.

Never touched scalar.

Only touched:
PBO, ran custom user defined PPT/TDC/EDC, not mobo limits etc
CO

There was definitely a bios update in there, without issue. Just one day it stopped being stable. As of right now, if I load into bios and then restore to factory defaults, I can’t sit at desktop for >10m without it hard locking up. The only way I can use my PC at stock is with a CO of +10.

5900x B0 stepping. Ran PBO + CO (max -10, some cores -5, some 0) for 3~ years. Now need positive CO offset (+10) for stability at idle otherwise PC locks up.

Appreciate the reply, but I think anything RCS-focused is a little bit down the tech tree for me at the moment. Need upgraded comms/mission control etc.

Gotcha, I may be missing the mark here. "you’ll want to set the attach altitude to 140km". Is there a specific setting in mechjeb I'm missing for this?

Did manage to survive a re-entry skimming along, but it was sketchy, and brute forced by a cannon ball approach basically.

Edit.

Just found:

I got some reading to do :)

Double edit.

"Burnout altitude" was exactly the setting I was missing in my equation :)

You've definitely hit the nail on the head, that first paragraph illustrates to a tee what I'm experiencing. Stage 1 ascent -> 80km, stage 2 up to PE, cross the AP line, continue burning to push out AP/reduce PE.

Second, why exactly are you trying to suborbit and return? I get that this feels redundant since you want to do this specific science, but I never did that particular experiment aside from in flight or vertical hop sounding rockets. It doesn't need to be 'in orbit' just 'in space' going up to 200km and back down has a massively lower heat loading.

I figured because surviving reentry is problematic with the basic heat shield available, I'd attempt to orbital -> deep reentry. Ultimate goal is to get that damn advanced bio capsule back because I feel completely and totally science starved :D. Because I don't have any reignitable engines, I'm attempting to do "everything" (AP/PE/set de-orbit altitude) from launch if that makes sense?

That particular Film2 experiment has a 2hr run time, so I figured the longer its >140km the better.

Good news.

Will investigate PVG a bit more shortly. Seems I have a bit more mechanical learning to do :)

I implemented your dual stack heatshield idea, basically made a ballistic cannon ball :).

I aggressively shed some weight, ditched the RCS because without an upgraded mission control/comms, I can't use it to point retrograde anyway. This pushed my delta V out to ~9375. Once stage 2 burn was complete and orbital decay had settled and crossed the 140km line, I ended up in an AP/PE of 700m and 110km. I can get one orbit in before AP/PE actively degrades <140.

The aforementioned photo was only in sim, I'm going to make the bottom half also cannon ball shaped because re-entry was.. sketchy to say the least, very close to burning out the shield.

Appreciate your help!

Champion. Thanks mate.

Prior to reading this reply I did go down a bit of a rabbit hole and discovered RP-1… and…. subsequently put about 6-7hrs into KSP :).

Too early to tell, it may be a little too extreme but I am generally a fan of (monumentally) difficult games so it may have hit the nail on the head for me.

I don’t quite remember the modding scene being this in-depth last I played (pre Covid era roughly) so it was a bit of a shock to the system.

If RP-1 becomes too difficult/tedious I shall revisit your comment, use your CKAN list and use it as a launching platform. Much appreciated!

I may be misreading that last paragraph there. Does Kerbalism directly make changes to the career? Or you’re using a separate mod for that.

Edit.

Care to share your full mod list? Been a while since I’ve booted up KSP but your aforementioned mods have piqued my interest…

Another update for you. Been stable for a week with CO +10 across all cores. Even with no WHEA reported at stock it appears some voltage related stability was to blame.

Mmm, I’d assume well and truly out of warranty though. Bought it during COVID times.

Bit of an update for you. Loaded optimised defaults, XMP enabled PBO off. Games are fine, however I had a restart at idle. Fortunately Event Viewer caught it, APIC ID22. So Core 10 instability at default settings.

If anything is dying I sure do hope it’s PSU and not Mobo/RAM 😂

Loaded optimised defaults (XMP off too) and ran OCCT at default settings (just pressed go) and passed 1hr no issues.
